Overview of BLS Statistics by Geography
For most BLS programs, data are published at the national level and are used in a variety of ways by economists, policy makers, business people, and private citizens. Some of our programs also publish data for smaller geographic units so customers can focus on regional, state, or local trends. For example, BLS publishes separate unemployment rates for the U.S., for Texas, and for San Antonio. We also have a national wage rate for registered nurses, as well as wage rates for registered nurses in California and Los Angeles.
BLS statistics with geographic detail:
State and Local Employment The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program provides detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and more than 270 metropolitan areas. State and Local Unemployment Rates The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program produces monthly and annual employment, unemployment, and labor force data for geographic regions and divisions, States, counties, metropolitan areas, and many cities, by place of residence.

California
Geography
Ranking third among the U.S. states in area, California has a diverse topography and climate. A series of low mountains known as the Coast Ranges extends along the 1,200-mi (1,930-km) coast. The region from Point Arena, N of San Francisco, to the southern part of the state is subject to tremors and sometimes to severe earthquakes caused by tectonic stress along the San Andreas fault . The Coast Ranges receive heavy rainfall in the north, where the giant cathedrallike redwood forests prevail, but the climate of these mountains is considerably drier in S California, and S of the Golden Gate no major rivers reach the ocean. Behind the coastal ranges in central California lies the great Central Valley , a long alluvial valley drained by the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. In the southeast lie vast wastelands, notably the Mojave Desert , site of Joshua Tree National Park. Rising as an almost impenetrable granite barrier E of the Central Valley is the Sierra Nevada range, which includes Mt. Whitney , Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park , and Yosemite National Park . The Cascade Range , the northern continuation of the Sierra Nevada, includes Lassen Volcanic National Park . Lying E of the S Sierra Nevada is Death Valley National Park. The drier portions of the state especially are subject periodically to large, wind-driven fires; in certain hilly areas sometimes devastating mudslides occur, particularly in the rainy season after large fires.

Welcome Calendar of Events Facts Cities ... Contact Us Facts Santa Barbara lies on the West Coast of the United States, 92 miles (148 km) north of Los Angeles and 332 miles (534 km) south of San Francisco. It is the largest city and the seat of Santa Barbara County, which covers 2,774 square miles. The Santa Ynez Mountains, which run along the east-west section of the Santa Barbara coast, serve as the boundary distinguishing “North County” (Buellton, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Los Alamos, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez, Solvang, and others) from “South County” (Carpinteria, Goleta, Montecito, Santa Barbara, and Summerland). While the South County cities and towns nestle in the Santa Ynez foothills on the shore of the Pacific Ocean, North County communities are located in higher-elevation inland mountain valleys. The county is famous for its beautiful beaches, most of which lie along a unique south-facing stretch of coastline that affords beach visitors sun all day long and greater shelter from winds and surf than many other coastal beaches. But there’s far more here than beaches. The county encompasses enormously varied terrain: nearly one-third of its total acreage is set aside in the Los Padres National Forest, which includes the rugged San Rafael Wilderness Area. Santa Barbara County’s topographical diversity creates a huge variety of outdoor recreational opportunities in a relatively compact area. Distances to Santa Barbara from other destinations include:
  • Hearst Castle 118 mi./189 km.

`HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF CALIFORNIA
Unless otherwise noted, these books are by secular publishers and many dealing with history assume that Native Americans inhabited California as long as ten thousand years ago. Bears, Pirates and Silver Lace Tales of Early California by Anne B. Fisher. These stories have become part of the legends of early California authentic tales of friendly Indians and Spaniards, and not so friendly pirates who pillaged along the coast; stories of bears who could never be killed, and soldiers who were afraid of a strange, spotted snake. There are stories of how California sea otters took silk and tea to Boston, how the first piano was brought to Monterey in 1843, and there was a party to celebrate it, and how two staunch little boys defied Southern sentiment and flew the flag at half-mast when they got the news that Abraham Lincoln had been shot twelve stories in all. Most of these stories originated on the Monterey Peninsula and were chosen from many by a class of fourth graders at the Del Monte School. The book was first published in 1944. Trade paper, 134 pages, illustrated with simple line drawings, some in color. Cat#BM. $5.95*

presented:
"East L.A. Moves South" to the Association of American Geographers meeting in Los Angeles in March, 2002.
This study examines the evolving hierarchy of Latino, especially Mexican, urban places in Los Angeles. Based on a variety of data, including demographic, economic, political and cultural, it contends that the core of Mexican Los Angeles has shifted from East L.A. to the old industrial corridor south of downtown, focusing on the city of Hungington Park. The processes and consequences of this move are considered, particularly contrasts in the built environment between East L.A. and Huntington Park.
Dr. Curtis presented a paper:
"Las Plazas of Manaus, Brazil" to the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers
This study examines the plazas of Manaus, Brazil. It offers a 7-fold typology of contemporary plazas based on prevailing function and landscape character. Historical linkages with Portuguese and French colonial influences are explored.

Spaces of Hope (California Studies in Critical Human Geography, 7) > Customer Review #1: A bit dry, but brilliant.

Theres a lot of theory here.
Dont let it scare you away. This book is a brilliant examination of ideas that run modern society in Americaand ideas that could have, but didnt. Harvey asks hard, delicate questions that poke at the very framework of modern society and makes you question assumptions about people and cities that you didnt even realize you had. Utopia has never been so interesting. The appendix, in which Harvey delineates a society wherein he uses the ideas he describes in the book, is extremely interesting and contradictory. Worth the price of the book alone.
