The General Surgery Residency Program is affiliated with UCSF. As such, California Pacific is a site of training for UCSF's General Surgery residents. While on rotation at California Pacific, residents experience training in the Center for Outpatient Surgery, as well as at the inpatient location. They participate in the preoperative assessment of prospective surgical patients, actively participate intraoperatively, as well as with postoperative management and care. In addition to experience in general surgery, they may gain experience in plastic, thoracic, and transplantation surgery. An important part of their rotation is to spend time in the private offices of surgeons evaluating pre- and post-operative patients. Surgical residents work closely with medical house staff providing surgical backup and appropriate consultation. Does California's Fiscal Future Bode Ill for Education?
Many analysts and legislative groups have argued that California's current fiscal problems are not merely transitory effects of a recession but are signs of a bleak new era for the "Golden State." Is this true? And, if so, how is a new era of fiscal limitations likely to affect the state's education systems? To help address these issues, Stephen Carroll, Eugene Bryton, Peter Rydell, and Michael Shires analyzed the trends that will shape the California budget over the next several years. Their results indicate that California indeed faces a budget crisis, and the long-term prospects for state support of some public service systemsincluding educationare bleak. Three trends appear likely to dominate the state's long-term fiscal condition:
  • State revenues will growbut only moderatelyin the foreseeable future.
  • "Receiver populations" (the elderly, school-age children, and others who tend to depend on state aid) will grow at least as fast as revenues.
  • Corrections costs (primarily the costs of building and operating state prisons)driven by "three-strikes" legislationwill skyrocket.

Education Communities (SIGs) as Markets
Matching Supply and Demand in detail:
California Education as a complex Virtual Market
Stanley Rice
ABSTRACT
On the Net and elsewhere, people want communication in the context of community. The Net greatly facilitates the creation of "Virtual Communities": specialized communication spaces. We do not physically live in them, but we define them. They are "virtual marketplaces" specialized to communities; and they are potentially the profit centers of the Net. A simple method is described here, enabling commercial resource correlation by non-specialized people. It correlates detailed individual needs, wishes, abilities, and situations, with commercial offerings of goods and services all in the context of Virtual Communities. Here we concentrate on Virtual Community in education: correlating needs with "local" sources of supply such as courses, materials, guidance, schools, teachers, employers, regulations, requirements, financial aid, etc. In fact, the education market is no different from any other market. The key in all correlation of supply and demand is a small, known vocabulary of correlation.

July 24, 2000
GENERAL EDUCATION POLICY
(This policy supersedes 98-00) This revised policy was recommended by the Academic Senate on April 13, 2000
and approved by the President on May 15, 2000. I. INTRODUCTION The goal of the bachelor's degree is to produce educated individuals. The components of an undergraduate education include the major, in which the student acquires depth of knowledge, electives that allow a student to explore personal or career-related interests, and general education. General education allows students to develop competency in academic skills that are essential to all academic majors. In addition, general education offers students broad knowledge beyond the focus of the major, as well as exposure to the rich diversity of the human experience. General education should foster habits of mind that lead to lifelong learning, and prepare graduates for full and productive lives.
The General Education program at CSULB is organized as a hierarchy that demands mastery of academic skills along with a pattern of coursework that will provide graduates with an understanding of self, the physical world, the development and functioning of human society, and its cultural and artistic endeavors, as well as an understanding of the methodologies, value systems, and thought processes employed in human inquiries. It involves three stages. Students who begin their college careers at CSULB will complete all three stages, while transfer students who enter the University with a certified general education transfer program will be expected to complete the final (Capstone) stage only.
