Resources "Including students as representatives on boards and committees takes classroom learning into the community and opens the door for many more students to become involved in the policies and practices that shape their schools." Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster Students on School Boards of Education Resource Guide Second Edition, August 2003 Created for www.SoundOut.org Description A multi-topic resource guide promoting Student Voice, Participation, Engagement, Involvement, and Representation on Local, District, Regional, and State Boards of Education. Includes research, examples, and other resources for students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members who support validating student voice in school decision-making by including students on school boards. For more information on students as education decision-makers, click here Introduction STUDENT participation on boards of education is a small part of a much larger movement towards meaningful student involvement throughout education. Since the 1960s the effort to promote student representation has waxed and waned, according to the will of school officials and the sincere interest of students involved. Today that tide is turning, and students across the US are calling for deepened engagement in the decision-making that affects them on all levels - in the classroom, in the auditorium, and in the boardroom. This guide can also serve students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members around the nation as they lobby for student participation on school boards of education.

    POSTED: 11:52 am PDT May 18, 2004
    UPDATED: 11:59 am PDT May 18, 2004
LOS ANGELES Amid protests by students and faculty, California's two university systems will consider fee increases Wednesday proposed as part of a deal with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that promises eventual enrollment growth and salary raises. University of California regents and California State University trustees are expected to adopt student fee hikes of 14 percent this year and 8 percent in each of the next two years. Student fees have increased in each of the past two years as well. Next fall, a UC resident undergraduate would pay about $6,200 annually while the fee at CSU would climb to about $2,300. Other aspects of the six-year agreement, including a return to enrollment increases in 2005, must be approved by the Legislature, which has until June 30 to adopt a state budget. The deal has been praised by administrators as a promise of financial stability but disparaged by critics as a sellout that will keep many students from attending college.

maintain close liaison with the california Department of education, State Board ofeducation, Commission on Retirement System, and other boards and agencies
    http://www.acsa.org/legislation/index.cfm
ACSA has maintained its commitment to advocacy on behalf of administrators and students through lobbying the legislative and administrative branches of state and federal government, grass-roots political influence, state-level candidate endorsements and campaign contributions, and ballot measure campaigns. Governmental Relations Department ACSA currently maintains a lobbying staff of three registered lobbyists to handle all of the policy and fiscal issues that impact preschool through adult education in California. Each lobbyist is assigned to cover specific issue areas that may be as broad as the state budget or as narrow as school site acquisition or adult education. ACSA follows more than 800 individual bills over a two-year legislative session.
Lobbying the Legislature includes testifying on bills before the Legislature's policy and fiscal committees, meeting with legislators and their staffs on issues that are important to ACSA, negotiating specific amendments to individual bills, and working in concert with other organizations on issues of common interest. As much as possible, ACSA's lobbyists also speak at local ACSA region meetings to update members on the latest developments in Sacramento and Washington, D.C.
ACSA's lobbyists maintain close liaison with the California Department of Education, State Board of Education, Commission on Teacher Credentialing, State Teachers' Retirement System, Public Employees Retirement System, and other boards and agencies that affect public schools and administrators. Fiscal agencies such as the Department of Finance and the Legislative Analyst are also monitored and lobbied when necessary. To assist Governmental Relations staff on issues before administrative agencies, ACSA has formed reactor groups, consisting of ACSA members with specific expertise. Two reactor groups exist currently; one advises on issues before the State Board of Education and one advises on issues before the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Others are formed when necessary.

Accreditation for Providers and Approvers of Continuing Education
There are several different ways to become recognized as a provider of continuing education for nurses through ANCC. (NOTE: Only ANA constituent member associations, specialty nursing organizations, and federal nursing services are eligible to apply to be approvers.) The first way is to apply to ANCC to become an accredited order form posted here as a PDF file, and mail with payment. All RN licensing boards nationwide acknowledge and accept contact hours from accredited providers. The only exception is the California Board of Registered Nursing which states that if the provider enters their state and presents an activity on California soil, the provider must also apply to the California Board for approval in order for the nurses from California to use the provider's contact hours for renewing their licenses. The California Board of Registered Nursing is in Sacramento, and their number is 916-322-3350. The second option is to become an approved provider through a constituent member association (CMA) that is an accredited approver through ANCC. Most CMAs are state nurses associations (do not confuse them with state licensing boards). The CMAs have different application fees, so we cannot tell you here how much they would charge. See our

    History:
Complementary and alternative therapies are based on the medical systems of ancient peoples, including Egyptians, Chinese, Asian Indians, Greeks, and Native Americans. Some therapies such as osteopathy and naturopathy have evolved in the United States over the past two centuries. Still other approaches, such as bioelectro-magnetic applications, are on the frontier of current scientific knowledge and understanding. Nursing Practice: The more complex complementary and alternative therapies become part of advanced education and nursing practice, frequently in the context of continuing education workshops or seminars; examples include acupressure, aromatherapy, massage, yoga, and reflexology. Acupuncture and chiropractic requires a license to practice in California. Applied kinesiology, herbal, homeopathy, and ayurveda, usually require formal education preparation and practice, and in some instances these therapies have private certification. STATE OF CALIFORNIA
