For Immediate Release Contact: Cindy Young PASADENA - Feb. 27 Beginning March 13, KPCC 89.3 FM will present a special five-part series entitled, We Are Still Here: The Untold Story of the Indians of Southern California. Airing once a month on Larry Mantle's award-winning AirTalk, the programs will feature the leaders of Southern California's tribes discussing their history and culture. The series will also include in-depth reports that will take listeners onto the reservations and into the lives of Southern California's Indians. The series' title, We Are Still Here, is what Cahuilla elder Katherine Siva Saubel told AirTalk Senior Producer Ilsa Setziol, who produced and reported the series. After surviving the brutal Mission era and intense government repression in the 19th and part of the 20th century, there are some 300,000 Indians from more than 100 tribes living in California today, struggling to preserve their culture and identity. Larry Mantle will be joined during the series by leaders of several local tribes, including the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Kumeyaay, Serrano, Tongva (Gabrielino), and Acjachamem (Juaneno).

California History: The Hidden Genocide
Jump to Page Navigation Buttons====>> The Shasta Nation, which Norma Jean belongs to, made a treaty in 1851 with the United States government. This treaty was never ratified by Congress, but the Indian people were led to believe it was an honorable agreement. To celebrate the signing of this treaty, the Indian people were invited to a feast at Fort Jones. The meat was laced with strychnine and 4,000 Indian people died there. First gold, then land drew the world to California. Some of the best, but many of the worst, swept into this fruitful country with their picks and their plows destroying the welcoming Indian people in their path. From 1850-1890, disease and murder reduced the indigenous people by 94%. Local bands of citizen "volunteers- " roamed the countryside killing Indian families, winning praise from their fellow citizens and payment from the state. For $3 and a little paperwork, "citizens" could indenture any Indian for 25 years. "Citizens" received from 50 cents to $5 per Indian scalp. The state of California paid out over a million dollars for scalps. From the early 1900's, Indian children were removed from their families and sent to boarding schools to be stripped of their culture and prepared for menial jobs at the bottom of the economic ladder. All these are acts of genocide, as defined by international law.

Forms of Violence Against Native Women
by Luana Ross (Salish), Department of Women Studies, University of Washington
Colonialism was, and remains, an act of violence. Historically, Native women were violated by agents of the United States and supposed model citizens (for example, John Sutter). In Indian boarding schools set up by the federal government, Native children were forbidden to speak their languages and were physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by government employees.
A bear by Haida Indians, Queen Charlotte Islands. Today in the U.S., a form of violence is the fact that Natives are overrepresented in prisons. This disparity is more clearly seen at the state level. For example, in 1992 Native Americans in Montana were approximately 6 percent of the total state population and while Native men comprised 17 percent of the total male prisoner population in Montana State Prison, 25 percent of the total female prisoner population were Native women. It was recently reported that Native women are now 40 percent of the total female prisoner population in Montana. Personal experiences of imprisoned women reflect a societal structure in which certain subgroups are penalized because of their race/ethnicity, nationhood, gender, and class. This is particularly clear when the violence experienced in prisoners' lives prior to incarceration, and their subsequent criminalization, is examined.

about News flash ... Volume 14, Number 1, Fall 2000 "You First Must Live Earthly..."
by Jacquelyn Ross Bill began by describing the physical and mental abuse that he witnessed and experienced in boarding school. Growing up as a young kid, so as with Indian people a long time ago, when Indians lived before the Europeans came, they had medicine people. They also knew who was special. They knew that a kid was going to be special but they treated him just like any other kid, only a medicine person would maybe doctor him, or he will not touch the rest of his brothers or sisters. So, we just grew up with it. Nobody asked questions. So we grew up and only the old people knew. Then when I got older, my uncle told me. And I said, "Me? Not me!" Because I grew up earthly. You have to have two parts, and one part of my life is living earthly - these are all material things. How I looked at life before I did anything spiritual, you see. You first must live earthly but you see, I didn’t know I was going to become a spiritual doctor. I had no idea. I lived like everybody else. Due to some family difficulties when Bill was just a young boy, he and his brothers and sisters were made wards of the court and sent to Stewart Indian School in Nevada. He recalls with striking immediacy the treatment he endured.

about News flash ... Volume 15, Number 3, Spring 2002 When Native Foods Were Left Behind:
Boarding School Nutrition and the Sherman Institute, 1902-1922 Jean Keller Interestingly and unfortunately, the insistence on more dairy products likely did more harm than good to Native American students. Over 75 percent of Native Americans are currently lactose intolerant, and there is no reason to believe that this percentage differed significantly a hundred years ago. This common food allergy manifests itself with lethargy, nausea, diarrhea, gas, and abdominal cramps. The diarrhea can be severe enough to purge other nutrients before they can be absorbed. Clearly, forcing lactose intolerant children to consume large quantities of dairy products would have resulted in a great deal of illness (inexplicable at the time), weakened constitutions, and resultant immunological vulnerability to numerous disease organisms. It is ironic that in their aggressive endeavor to save Indian students at nonreservation boarding schools from the scourge of tuberculosis, the Indian Office inadvertently created more illness and vulnerability to disease. Jean Keller is an adjunct professor in American Indian Studies at Palomar College. Her book

Indian School Hospitals Under the
Office of Indian Affairs (c.1883-c.1916)
Off-reservation boarding schools were considered by many government and boarding school officials to be major successes in forcing Native American children to adopt the ways of white "civilization" and simultaneously to abandon their own Native traditions. Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was a school of this type, as was Sherman Institute in Riverside, California. Native children were originally brought to Carlisle as hostages to insure that their parents would not continue armed resistance against the United States Army. However, many of the first Carlisle students became ill from diseases, such as tuberculosis, and died in the school's opening years. This may be a reason for Carlisle President Richard H. Pratt's letter to a physician in 1884, requesting help in selecting "healthy children" for the school from Indian reservations in the West. This letter is displayed here. In addition to providing medical treatment to its students, Carlisle Indian School Hospital also functioned as a preliminary nurse training facility, preparing Native American women to move on to regular nursing schools, as the souvenir album here shows.

The Mountain Park Baptist Academy is known for its good choir, polite students and resort-like campus in the hills. It is not known for murder. Late Monday afternoon, deputies and paramedics arrived at the school and found the body of William Andrew Futrelle II lying in a wooded area outside the boys' dormitory. His throat had been slashed. The 16-yr-old student from Boca Raton, FL, also had been beaten in the face- possibly with both a club and brick, said Wayne County Prosecutor Jon A. Kiser, who declined to discuss a motive. On Tuesday, an 18-yr-old student from Bentonville, AR, Anthony Gene Rutherford, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Two 15-yr-old boys from California were held for a hearing to decide whether to charge them as adults. Kiser said Deputies arrested the three suspects, who surrendered shortly after the body was discovered. Police say they found a pocketknife, a piece of firewood and a brick near the body. Rutherford was being held without bail in the Wayne County Jail in Greenville, said Wayne County Sheriff Nathan Hale. The young man is the son of Benton County Judge Bruce Rutherford of Siloam Springs, Ark. In Arkansas, a county judge is the county's chief administrator.

A History of American Indians in California:
In the 1880s, there was increased public awareness of the problems California Indians were confronting. While the problems were rarely analyzed, many people helped to improve the quality of life for Indians. There was an effort to improve the education of Indians through schools, and to provide them with land to better their economic conditions so that Indians could become full citizens of the United States of America. In the early 1880s, Helen Hunt Jackson wrote A Century of Dishonor and sent a copy of her book to each United States congressman. She was then appointed to a commission to examine the condition of Indians in Southern California. Her visits resulted in The Report on the Condition and Needs of the Mission Indians of California, by special agents Helen Jackson and Abbot Kinney. The report summarized the problems and concerns of Southern California Indians; many of the conditions outlined in the report, however, were applicable to all California Indians. The report noted that Indians had been continually displaced from their land. She also noted that while many Indians had taken "immoral" paths, others had chosen the responsibilities of herding animals and raising crops. In her report, she also noted that the United States government had done little to right the wrongs of the past. While Jackson did not solve all the problems of Southern California Indians, her work did bring their concerns to the attention of the American public and Congress.

A History of American Indians in California:
HISTORIC SITES Sherman Institute (Riverside Perris School)

Riverside County The Sherman Institute is located at 9010 Magnolia Avenue between Jackson and Monroe streets, in Riverside, California. Several buildings stand on the site, including dormitories, administrative offices, a sports stadium, and a museum. The museum is the only remaining original structure. Its style is common to railroad depots at the turn of the century, unlike the mission style of other buildings on the campus. A high chain-link fence surrounds the 140-acre area. Named for James S. Sherman, who later became vice president of the United States under President William H. Taft, the institute once occupied two locations, the Perris Indian School, south of Riverside, and the Riverside Indian School at the present location. In 1904, the two schools were consolidated, and the Perris Indian School was relocated to the site on which the Sherman Institute now stands. Sherman housed the first permanent Indian hospital in California. The U.S. Government built it in 1901 in an effort to respond to the serious health problems of California Indians. (Heizer, 1978:118) After having established educational facilities for Indians in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the U.S. Indian Service began to abandon the federal day schools in the late 1920s and 1930s. In spite of its status as an Indian school, the service also began to limit enrollment of California Indian students at the Sherman Institute. As a result of the new enrollment policy, Indian children entered the public schools in greater numbers. In 1964, a U.S. Senate investigating committee wrote a denunciation of both federal and public education for Indian youth. Regarding the Sherman Institute, it stated:
