Stanford Report, November 6, 2002 Scholars decode ancient text, shake up pre-calculus history BY JOHN SANFORD Reviel Netz, an assistant professor of classics, might not have actually shouted "Eureka!" on a visit last year to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, but that's what he was thinking. A scholar of Greek mathematics, Netz was hanging out with one of his colleagues and frequent collaborators, Professor Ken Saito of the Osaka Prefecture University in Japan, when they flew together to Baltimore in January 2001 to look at a recently rediscovered codex of Archimedes treatises. "It was basically just tourism," Netz recalled. On a lark they examined a theretofore unread section of The Method of Mechanical Theorems , which is the book's biggest claim to fame; no other copy of the work is known to exist. What they discovered made their jaws drop. A section from The Archimedes Palimpsest, which classics Professor Reviel Netz stumbled on during a visit to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. Closer examination showed the Greeks understood the concept of infinity. ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, WALTERS ART MUSEUM, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

Pre-Calculus at MacArthur Pushes the Frontier by Anne Davidian and Andy Lippai, Dept. of Mathematics, MacArthur High School, Levittown, N.Y. After the installation of Classtalk was completed, small crowds of students and teachers gathered outside of Room 229 at MacArthur High School to discuss the possible purpose of the wires that were hanging from the ceiling. Speculation ranged from some kind of torture device used on lazy students to intravenous transfusions that would enlighten students on the finer points of mathematics. However, when they were informed of the real purpose of the wires, people were even more amazed! Classtalk has now become an established fixture, but the amazement at its capabilities continues to excite us daily. It is a true wonder to be able to have a constant pulse on what every student is doing at all times! Students can no longer several days of quizzing, the time allotted for an answer had decreased, while the number of students answering correctly increased. In using the CBL (Calculator Based Laboratory), students tossed a ball in the air and graphed the height of the ball as a function of time. Students were then able to determine an equation to model the data. From this equation, they also calculated equations for the velocity and acceleration of the ball. Through the use of the Classtalk system, the students were able to share their equations with their classmates, and see the equations that other groups calculated. It was quite exciting to actually see how the same experiment that was performed independently by many different groups produced the same results

Math 105 Pre-Calculus
Primary purpose of this course is to prepare students for success in trigonometry-based calculus, non-trigonometry- based caluculus, or for success in any other course that requires a strong background in pre-calculus level mathmatics. Topics include some review of basic algebraic concepts and procedures, and of some analytic geometry. Emphasis is placed on linear, quadratic, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, as well as their respective functional inverses. The relationships between the graphs of these functions, solutions to equations involving these functions, and applications of these functions receive detailed attention. Prequisites: 2 years of HS algebra (or MATH 090) and 1 year of HS geometry. Students cannot receive credit for both MATH 104 and MATH 105. (F,W,S).

pre-calculus placement test - courses... Precalculus Placement Test What is the purpose of the Precalculus Placement Test? The purpose of the Precalculus Placement Test is to place you into the appropriate introductory mathematics course at UCI. You will be placed into one of the following courses: Mathematics 2A, the first quarter of the calculus series, which is offered every quarter; or a course in precalculus (Mathematics 1A or 1B). Mathematics 1A is offered fall and winter quarters; Mathematics 1B is offered every quarter. Should I take the Precalculus or the Mathematical Analysis Placement test? Before taking this test, you should have completed a precalculus course, or the equivalent, with a grade of "C" or better. An example of a precalculus course is a fourth-year high school math course with trigonometry and math analysis or a community college course. What is the purpose of the Precalculus Placement Test? Mathematics 2A is required for the following majors:
  • Applied Ecology Engineering (all majors) Biological Sciences Mathematics Chemistry Physics Economics Earth and Enviromental Sciences Information and Computer Science

Since test results are valid for only one year, students who do not plan to take Mathematics 2A in their first year may postpone taking this test for one year. This include ICS majors.

Description
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the mathematical foundation for an introductory calculus course. In order to complete the course successfully, students must have had some basic algebra preparation, such as Algebra 11 or the equivalent. Although the course writer does not assume that students remember all their basic algebra, the pace of this course is too fast for students to learn all the course material without having had some previous exposure to basic algebra.
Delivery Method
Delivery is self-paced, allowing you the flexibility to proceed through the course according to your own schedule. The BCOU has no admission requirements and you can register for this course at any time throughout the year.
Prerequisites
One of the Principles of MATH 11, or Applications of MATH 12 or MATH 024, or equivalent skills as established by assessment, is strongly recommended.
Exclusions
Only one of MATH 100 and MATH 103 may be taken for credit. Students with credit for MATH 101, 104, 120, or equivalent, may not take this course for further credit.
