    • My research interests. My research interests focus on the interaction of two branches of ring theory. Cohn, Schofield, and Bergman explored the techniques of universally inverting maps between projective modules as a way of localizing rings. The nature of the technique does not lead to easy examination of the resulting ring. The resulting rings however are often interesting objects in their own right. My research looks at ways of explicitly producing these rings. (Explicit here means that the elements have normal forms that can be used for computations.) In particular I look at ways of reducing the instruction "invert all full maps" to "invert a well selected finite set of maps". One place that this technique shows promise is with finite dimensional algebras. The techniques of universal localization give promise of explicitly producing various large modules, like the generic modules. Most of the work in this field has focused on modules that are finite dimensional over a field that is central to the original ring. The focus seems to be driven by the fact that the homological methods use double duals. The universal localization techniques do not seem to require this finite dimensional restriction. Academic interests - My academic interests include: Calculus reform - The department is deep into the process of implementing calculus reform. The possibilities are exciting. The question of integrating new technologies into the curriculum gave us the opportunity to review the larger questions of what we are trying to do when we teach calculus. This process has us reexamining the pedagogical methods we are using in core mathematics cores. Hopefully, the lesson we learn will spread up and down the mathematics curriculum.

    BRIDGING THE VECTOR CALCULUS GAP
    There is a "vector calculus gap" between the way vector calculus is usually taught by mathematicians and the way it is used by other scientists. This material is essential for physicists and some engineers due to its central role in the description of electricity and magnetism. It is the goal of this proposal to bridge this gap. The vector calculus gap goes much deeper than a difference in emphasis. Ask a physicist or engineer what topics should be covered in vector calculus, and the answer will pretty much agree with the existing syllabus used by mathematicians. But the traditional language used by mathematicians to teach this material is so different from the way it is used in applications that students are often unable to translate. A major part of the problem is the traditional mathematics emphasis on Cartesian coordinates to describe vectors as triples of numbers, rather than emphasizing that vectors are arrows in space. This leads to the all-important dot and cross products being memorized as algebraic formulas, rather than statements about projections and areas, respectively. It is hardly surprising that many students are then barely able to compute line and surface integrals, or the divergence and curl of a vector field, let alone understand their geometric interpretation. The traditional approach has one big advantage: It provides a single framework for handling quite general problems, the classic example being problems involving a paraboloid. But most practical applications, including virtually all at the undergraduate level, fall into a small number of special cases, such as those with spherical or cylindrical symmetry. There are no paraboloids in undergraduate physics! Problems with a high degree of symmetry become much more intuitive when the computations are not only done in appropriate coordinates, but also using a vector basis adapted to those coordinates. This emphasizes the geometry of the particular problem, rather than a brute force algebraic computation which many students fail to find illuminating.

    Classroom Activities Amy Bruckman has used MOOs in her teaching since October of 1985. She is the founder of both MediaMOO, a MUD designed to be a professional community for media researchers, and MOOSE Crossing, a constructionist learning environment designed to get kids excited about reading, writing, and programming. For more information about her classroom activities, please see her homepage Michael Brundage has been using MOOs in his teaching of freshman-level multivariable calculus and geometry for about a year and a half. For the freshman calculus course, the MOO functioned as a fancy Web server, providing access to online copies of handouts given in class, answer keys (not usually available in class), test schedules, interactive worksheets (such as a partial differentiation drill), bulletin boards, and even a Mathematica graphing engine (which allowed students to enter a one, two, or three variable equation and then see its graph). Used in this capacity, the MOO was accessed over 1000 times each week. Jeff Cooper teaches English at Richmond High School. He has used MOOs to conference with students on-line and to introduce students to object oriented programming.

    It's the latest thing in education: Teaching teachers the subjects they're going to teach. The Vermont Math Initiative focuses on building the in-depth math knowledge of elementary teachers, reports Education Week "You can't teach what you don't know," said Kenneth I. Gross, a professor of mathematics and education at the University of Vermont and the director of the initiative. Teachers can't teach through games and activities if they don't understand the underlying math concepts, Gross said. "If the teacher doesnít know the math they are trying to get out of the game or activity, no math comes out of the activity at all," he said. Like many in the program, Jackie Bailey, a 3rd grade teacher at South Burlington Elementary School, was "math phobic" when she enrolled. Now, she excitedly pulls out colorful examples of the calculus work she has done with her students. "I never imagined I would have come this far," she said. The program tries to balance content (what to teach) with pedagogy (how to teach). But the university's education department has pulled out, leaving the program to the mathematicians. Too much content for the ed profs, apparently. Another Ed Week story reports on the rise of science specialists in elementary schools. Again, many elementary teachers, trained as generalists, aren't well-prepared to teach science. The emphasis on reading and math tends to squeeze elementary science out of the curriculum.
