Funding Agency: Office of Naval Research
Agency Number: Abstract
We propose a design and an implementation of a system for interactive walkthrough of large CAD models. The system will be interfaced with the immersive hardware and used for applications like immersive modeling, design evaluation, simulation and training. Our emphasis is to develop better algorithms, software systems and demonstrate their applications. The set of problems include:
  • Hierarchical and multiresolution representation of models for fast display.
  • Fast techniques for visibility culling
  • Use of textures for representing geometry and radiositized meshes.
  • Interactive display of large polygonal, sculptured and solid models on current graphics systems.
  • Interactive collision detection between geometric models and collision response using haptic interfaces.
We expect to integrate the systems with the graphics and immersive hardware and use them for immersive modeling and design evaluation of submarines and ship models. The goal is to create an environment where the user will explore a model of a submarine or a ship in the same way as he would explore a real one by walking around it. Eventually such systems will also be useful for experiential training, crisis management and integrated damage control training technology.

Workshop: Physical Design not in Great Shape
Electronic Engineering Times
Nicolas Mokhoff
IC physical-design problems that pundits four years ago proclaimed "solved" brought some 120 experts back to the table here last week to address them anew. The Fifth Physical Design Workshop , sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery 's Special Interest Group on Design Automation , explored the chasm between circuit layout and circuit functions in the deep-submicron realm and concluded that a lack of focus, not tools, is what's holding the EDA industry back from closing the gap. "The CAD-research community is solving yesterday's problems rather than tomorrow's," said Cadence Design Systems fellow Lou Scheffer, a veteran floor-planning and place-and-route-research specialist who spent two years as an IC designer. "We are wasting a lot of time improving things that are good enough while ignoring the things that will determine how we design in a few years. "CAD people today are still concerned with finding a slightly better algorithm for some old problem, when they should be worrying about how in the world they are going to use 50 million transistors in any reasonable amount of time."

CAD Last modified: Thursday, May 14, 1998 Acronym for c omputer- a ided d esign . A CAD system is a combination of hardware and software that enables engineers and architects to design everything from furniture to airplanes. In addition to the software, CAD systems require a high-quality graphics monitor; a mouse light pen , or digitizing tablet for drawing; and a special printer or plotter for printing design specifications. CAD systems allow an engineer to view a design from any angle with the push of a button and to zoom in or out for close-ups and long-distance views. In addition, the
