CABEZA DE VACA, ALVAR NUNEZ

Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca [Cabeza de Vaca means "head of a cow"] (1490?-1557?) was a Spanish explorer who sailed to North America from Spain, leaving in 1527. He traveled from Florida to Texas on a raft, then walked from Texas to Mexico City. He also explored the Paraguay River in South America. De Vaca and his fellow travelers were the first Europeans to see the bison, or American buffalo For more information on Cabeza de Vaca, click here CABOT, JOHN
John Cabot (1450-1499) was an Italian-born English explorer and navigator. In Italy, he is known as Giovanni Caboto (which is his original name). For more information on Cabot, click here CABOT, SEBASTIAN
Sebastian Cabot (1474?-1557?) was an explorer, mapmaker and navigator of Italian descent. He worked as a cartographer (mapmaker) for England's King Henry VIII, was a captain for Spain's King Ferdinand V, explored for England's King Henry VII, and may have secretly explored for Venice. Sebastian Cabot's father was the explorer John Cabot Cabot searched for the Northwest passage across North America (1508). He began an unsuccessful trip around the world (1526-1529) in a voyage that supposed to sail to China and the Moluccas (the Spice Islands, in Indonesia), but he only made it as far as the enormous mouth of the Rio de la Plata (a river between Argentina and Uruguay in South America). Later, he began to work for the English again, searching for a water passage across the north of Asia around 1553.

English men and women of the sixteenth century experienced an unprecedented increase in knowledge of the world beyond their island. Religious persecution at home compelled a substantial number of both Catholics and Protestants to live abroad; wealthy gentlemen (and, in at least a few cases, ladies) traveled in France and Italy to view the famous cultural monuments; merchants published accounts of distant lands like Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, and Russia; and military and trading ventures took English ships to still more distant shores. In 1496, a Venetian tradesman living in Bristol, John Cabot, was granted a license by Henry VII to sail on a voyage of exploration, and with his son Sebastian discovered Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; in 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert returned to Newfoundland to try to establish a colony there. The Elizabethan age saw remarkable feats of seamanship and reconnaissance. On his ship the

    Who was John Cabot?
John Cabot was an Italian Cabot was a lifelong friend of Christopher Columbus With a great sense of adventure, John Cabot approached the kings of Spain and Portugal for sponsorship that would enable him to get an expedition together to similarly explore a new route to the orient by sailing west. At that time, spices and silks were carried overland from China by mule and camel, taking an enormously long time to reach Europe. A ship can carry much more cargo and if a route to the east could be found over the ocean, then the finder would become very rich indeed. Unfortunately, Spain and Portugal were not interested in Cabots ideas. In May the following year, Cabot left Bristol on his ship the Matthew and sailed west with the intention of finding China or Japan. He and his companions then set sail south, travelling over nine hundred miles down the east coast of north America before turning east and back to England. Sadly, John Cabot and his fleet did not return from the second expedition. Nothing is known of what happened to him. He may have perished in a storm, or hit an iceberg, or maybe even reached the new continent and died at the hands of Indians, or more likely, the Spanish.

    Who is John Cabot?
When King Henry heard of the marvelous success of Columbus, he felt a disappointment because he had failed to secure for his crown and country the renown and advantages which their assistance in the great achievement would have given. But he was not thereby discouraged nor deterred from assisting in further attempts at discovery, though such assistance was, at first, only a permission. By royal charter he gave to John Cabot (a Venetian merchant at Bristol), and his sons, in 1496, permission to explore any seas with five ships and as many seamen as they might choose to employ, at their own expense, "to discover and occupy isles or countries of the heathen "There," he said to that functionary, "my victuals failing, I departed from thence and returned into England, where I found great tumults among the people and preparations for wars in Scotland, by reason whereof there was no more consideration had to this voyage. Whereupon I went into Spain, to the Catholic king."
Henry was then struggling for his throne against righteous claimants. Ferdinand refused to give his daughter in marriage to Arthur whilst these claimants existed. The unscrupulous Tudor beheaded two of them in the tower, and eagerly depressed and despoiled the old nobility who were adherents of the fallen house of York, his rival. These things caused the "tumults among the people," mentioned by Cabot. The king's eagerness to enrich himself by despoiling that old nobility; the agreement of Ferdinand to bestow his daughter Catharine upon Arthur, and the failure of Cabot to bring back gold from America, all caused the monarch to give "no more consideration to this voyage." Prince Arthur died soon after the nuptials, and Catharine became the unfortunate wife of Henry VIII.

Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) was a French explorer who led three expeditions to Canada, in 1534, 1535, and 1541. He was looking for a route to the Pacific through North America (a Northwest Passage) but did not find one. Cartier paved the way for French exploration of North America. Cartier sailed inland, going 1,000 miles up the St. Lawrence River. He also tried to start a settlement in Quebec (in 1541), but it was abandoned after a terribly cold winter. Cartier named Canada ; "Kanata" means village or settlement in the Huron-Iroquois language. Cartier was given directions by Huron-Iroquois Indians for the route to "kanata," a village near what is now Quebec, but Cartier later named the entire region Canada. DE CHAMPLAIN, SAMUEL

He wanted new lands for France and to search for a western sea passage to China. In 1524, he was commissioned by King Francis. I claim new land for a western sea passage to China. He also got killed and eaten by the native of Americans. The Narrow Verrazano Bridge is named after him. He seems to have landed on the coast of present day North Carolina. John Cabot
by Chris I am writing about an Italian explorer named John Cabot. John was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. Little is known about him as a boy. We do know he wanted to be a sailor when he was young. In 1497, he sailed for the first time for the king of England. He sailed to North America and landed in Cape Brenton. He also sailed the second time to the New Foundland. We should remember him because he discovered New Foundland. Also he sailed for England to North America. Giovanni Da Verrazano
by Carina Giovanni Da Verrazano was born in about the year of 1485 and died about the year of 1527. He was born in Italy, but we do not know much about his early life. We do know more about his mid and late life.
