64. Cable Modems Put Industry On Fast Track
so they can get the cable modem business past the startup stage as fast as possible, whether it s developing appropriate content, hardware or infrastructure
http://www.cedmagazine.com/ced/9601/9601b.htm
By Michael Lafferty The cable television industry's intent to deploy high-speed data modems was shouted out loudly and ratified by nearly every large MSO during last month's Western Cable Show, where an unprecedented show of support for universal communication standards took place.
Operators and vendors alike appeared to be in lockstep during a press conference at which they called for a set of common network interfaces and protocols (see Figure 1 ). Dr. John Malone, CEO of TCI, said such protocols are absolutely critical if computer users are to continue to be interconnected over broadband networks just as they are today via narrowband phone lines. While the show of force should rightly be considered a watershed event, so should the fact that this is the first time cable operators have embraced the retail model where consumers own the hardware. In the past, mostly for security reasons, the cable TV industry has been reluctant to give up any control of the devices that are connected to its networks. Furthermore, such commonality will drive costs down, allowing consumers to one day purchase the modem at retail outlets at prices below $200, according to Jim Chiddix, senior VP of engineering and technology at Time Warner Cable. "I see no reason why these modems, when mass produced, should cost any more than (today's analog) set-top box," he said.

November 16th, 2001
Greetings, folks! Today we talk about one of our favorite topics: Networking. First we look into problems connecting an older iMac with a cable modem, and then we get into a couple of printer-related networking issues as well. If you have a question of your own, you can e-mail me , or ask in the Ask Dave/Mac Support Boards , where everyone can take a stab answering your questions! For now, read on! Sam Pratt writes, "I just had a cable modem installed at home for an old iMac 233, and expected a simple installation I've done this before at my office, no hassles, three different types of Macs. Though I set the TCP/IP and AppleTalk control panels correctly, no juice from the Ethernet port. Navigator and Explorer can't make a connection. I threw away every possible preferences file in sight. Zapped the PRAM several times now. Ran Norton. Ran TechTool. Upgraded the firmware and upgraded from OS 8.6 to 9.1. Still nothing. I tested the cable modem connection with a PowerBook running OS 9.1 no problems. So the cable modem is doing its job. I'm starting to think there is a hardware problem with my Ethernet port. Any final suggestions before I drag it in to be serviced?" But if you plug your computer into a hub with a normal (non-crossed) CAT-5 Ethernet cable, you should get a link light. If you don't, there's something wrong with the machine.

When debating the relative merits of cable modem and DSL service, network security might be the most controversial item on the comparison chart. At first glance it appears one clearly wins the security battle over the other, but does this commonly-held opinion stand up to closer scrutiny?
DSL's Leg Up
Conventional wisdom holds that DSL service inherently offers better security than cable modem service. Some proponents of this view also happen to be DSL providers.

71. Toshiba Network Products : Products : PCX1100U
The U in this product stands for USB, the hardware technology that eliminates the need for an Ethernet (NIC) Card to connect your cable modem to your computer
http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/products/pcx1100u.html
Now available online or in retail stores.
It's here! Toshiba's PCX1100U, also known as the DAZ8813, the foundation of the family of PCX Cable Modem products. The "U" in this product stands for USB, the hardware technology that eliminates the need for an Ethernet (NIC) Card to connect your cable modem to your computer. Talk about easy installation! You can now choose between USB or Ethernet on the same modem. You'll even be able to run two computers simultaneously using both ports, if your cable company offers this service!
USB modems are plug-and-play, with no complicated hardware settings to adjust, no opening up your computer just to get high-speed Internet access. The USB cable (supplied) simply plugs into your USB-capable Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP computer and your modem. You save up to $100.00 in setup charges by not having to buy the Ethernet Card. Plus, installation becomes less time-consuming and less complex!
So, ask your local retailer about the PCX1100U USB Cable Modem only from Toshiba.

The OpenCable™ initiative, managed by the Advanced Platforms and Services group at CableLabs, was begun in 1997 with a goal of helping the cable industry deploy interactive services over cable. Like several other CableLabs projects, including DOCSIS™ and PacketCable™, OpenCable will provide a set of industry standards, which will help accomplish this goal via three key objectives to:
  • define the next-generation digital consumer device, encourage supplier competition, and create a retail hardware platform.
  • As such, the OpenCable project has two key components: a hardware specification and a software specification. The hardware specification allows a receiver that can be sold at retail to provide interoperability. The software specification of the OpenCable project, called the OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP), solves the problem of proprietary operating system software by creating a common platform upon which interactive services may be deployed. Check here for more information about OCAP If you need more information about the OpenCable project, please

Q Where can I get a Cable Modem?

A: If you already have Cable TV, your chances of getting a cable modem are decent, but they are still only available in major metropolitan areas. Canada seems to have quite a few ISP/Cable Companies that offer Internet Cable connections. Your best bet is to call your local cable company and ask what their plans are for adding Cable Modem Internet service in the future. You should also check with surrounding towns and other local Cable providers. If Cable Modems are not available, you should also check with your local Phone and Internet providers, since they may offer some form of xDSL connectivity, which is also fairly fast.

Disregard cable modem documentation about being able to support multiple PCs via a hub: with most domestic broadband ISPs (including NTL Blueyonder ), you can have only one. If you have more than one computer on a LAN at home, and you want to make the cable modem available to them all, you cannot just plug the cable modem into your LAN hub, because the cable modem will communicate with only one MAC address, and will issue only one IP address via DHCP. [As an exception to the above statements, the NTL Xbox Live service allows two MAC addresses to be served from the cable modem, and thus

USB vs ethernet: the pros and cons
USB networking imposes a heavier load on the system processor than ethernet does, so there might be a performance impact in using USB for networking: this is unlikely to affect your network speeds, but might affect the percentage of processor time available to applications. The USB experience is influenced greatly by the quality of the USB device drivers: ethernet drivers are more mature than USB ones. Some PCs have USB hardware that needs driver updates, see below. Some PCs have USB hardware that is not good enough for the high demands of a cable modem: you might get less trouble from an ethernet card. But an ethernet card involves extra expense, whereas USB connections are built in to most modern PCs. USB cable modem drivers do not work with Windows 95, even 95 with USB Additions. If your PC already has an ethernet card, there is no contest: use ethernet.

    SECURING CABLE MODEMS
We installed both a hardware and a software firewall to test how well they protected an "always on" SOHO connection. Here's what happened.
    BY GARY C. KESSLER
Not so long ago, high-speed Internet access for the small office/home office (SOHO) or remote office/ branch office (ROBO) was an expensive proposition. But cable modems and the various digital subscriber line (xDSL) technologies have totally changed the calculus, making telecommuting and remote office connections over the Internet a (relatively inexpensive) breeze in many parts of the country.
However, few SOHO users stop to wonder if their broadband-connected home systems are as vulnerable as any computer on an enterprise network. While we spend considerable resources securing our enterprise Internet connections, we routinely overlook the home. Considering the growing number of broadband users working from home or remote offices, these systems add significant risk to a company's overall security profile.
Back in January, Information Security ran an article on how to secure xDSL connections (see "
