Here you will find the history of the beautiful Royal County of Berkshire. For the uninitiated, Berkshire is to be found just to the west of London in the UK, extending along the Thames Valley. It is pronounced "BARK-SHEER". This site covers the 'historic county' of Berkshire, that is to say the true county irrespective of any changes to administrative boundaries. The post-1974 so-called 'new county' is a myth. It only ever existed as an administrative unit, not as a geographic county. Abingdon, Faringdon, Wallingford, Wantage and the Vale of the White Horse are all in Berkshire NOT Oxfordshire.
