  • Any color bumpy chenille stem (for butterfly body)
  • 4 Pom poms, optional
  • Wire cutters
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Tacky glue (if using pom poms)

How To Make It

    Tiny machines that fly like insects will soon be a reality. That is the confident prediction of scientists who have just studied the remarkable aerobatics of the butterfly. There is a lot of interest in this sort of thing from toy manufacturers
    Dr Adrian LR Thomas
    The two Oxford researchers put red admirals in a specially designed wind tunnel and used high-speed cameras to analyse how the animals moved through the air. The results of the experiments, they say, represent a major advance in our understanding of flight mechanics on the small scale, and will be invaluable to engineers trying to build "micro air vehicles". "There is a lot of interest in this sort of thing from toy manufacturers and, of course, the military," Dr Adrian LR Thomas told BBC News Online. "We are now moving in the direction where we will soon be able to build 10-centimetre-wingspan aircraft, either radio controlled or autonomous. "They would make an entertaining toy but if you put a camera on them then the [security agencies] could send them into small spaces such as caves to see what was going on."

    Butterflies (Lepidoptera - Rhopalocera):
    Endangered / Protected Species
    European Red Lists
    (Non-frame versions: non-European lists - USA, Brazil, Japan - on my Butterfly Pages The IUCN collection of Red Lists on the Net is very incomprehensive in regard of insects. So here are the data I have collected from a variety of sources. As some countries like Spain or Germany distinguish several degrees of threat within the status "Endangered" while others just use four main categories I reduced their number of status categories to keep the lists simple and comparable. This means that the data provided here should not be taken as "official" lists. I do my best to correct and update the information continuously, though. Namely in regard of Germany I also list species which are protected by law although not threatened (yet). One may ask, what the use of Red Lists is, anyway. One offical purpose is to protect the species specified there from being killed, collected, or disturbed. But since butterflies are mainly threatened by habitat destruction, use of insecticides etc. this seems a pretty superfluous idea. Collecting most likely is their least important threat. But Red Lists might serve as indicators for the destruction or recovery (!) of nature. Status categories: X = Extinct
    E = Endangered (resp. "threatened")

    Attracting Butterflies
    There is absolutely no denying that gardeners have a deep love of nature. Not only do they love their flowers and vegetables, lawns and shrubs, they also love the animals that attracted by the fruits of their hobby. Among those creatures of nature, are a wide range of colorful and beautiful butterflies. Almost weightless and seemingly floating on the breeze, Butterflies in the yard bring delight to young and old alike. If you are looking to attract Butterflies to your yard, you need to know but one single word......Nectar. And with that one word, we give the advantage to gardeners in luring them. A gardener knows that the nectar come from a variety of flowers that he or she can grow in flower gardens to feed the butterflies. The more nectar in the flower, the more popular the plants will be to a butterfly. It will also work to attract many species of birds and bees, too. Did you know?
