121. Ginkgo's Cyber Pet Adoption Agency
Offers cat, mice, faeries, butterflies and sorceresses.
http://www.jade-leaves.com/pets/adopt.shtml
Hello, I'm Ginkgo. Welcome to my cyber pet adoption agency. A few things have changed around here, because I'm a very busy sorceress. I've rearranged some things, and now am finally reopening. I have plenty of pets to choose from, and they're all eager to find new homes. We have cats and mice and faeries and butterflies and sorceresses and more. But first you need to read the rules and then you can come in and meet everyone who lives here. Rules #1. You must have a webpage and know how to put images on it.
(If you don't have a webpage and want to just save them to your hard drive to look at, that's ok, too.)
#2. You must link your pet back to me at http://www.jade-leaves.com/
#3. You must upload the images to your own serverdon't steal my bandwidth.
#4. You may adopt as many pets as you like as long as you link them all back here.
#5. You don't have to but I would appreciate it if you would register your pet by signing the adoption register to let me know where your pets will be living. The adoption process is now automatedfind the pet or pets that you would like to adopt, save them to your computer, put them on your pages, and link them back to me.

Butterflies of the Rain Forest

utterflies are among the most beautiful and marvelous creatures in all of nature. Tropical Central and South America is the richest region in the world for butterflies, but they are found in many other places as well. Costa Rica has over 1300 species. A butterfly's life begins with a very tiny egg laid on a leaf. From this develops a larva, the butterfly's caterpillar stage. Eventually, the larva makes a cocoon or chrysalis. Safe inside, it develops into a pupa. Eventually, a beautiful butterfly is released from this container, flying heavenward, fully-developed. What an astounding transformation, from a humble, earth bound worm-like creature to a delicate flying wonder!
The adult usually eventually returns to the very plant or tree trunk where it grew up. There it lays its own eggs and begins the process anew (a 2 to 3 month cycle). Did you know that...
The color in a butterfly's wings does not come from pigment. The color is produced prism-like by light reflected by their transparent wing scales.
Stranger yet, no moth or butterfly eats solid food (though some butterflies drink nectar); some can not even take in moisture.

125. BUTTERFLIES AND THEIR LARVAL FOODPLANTS
Photographs and descriptions of the butterflies and their foodplants of Orange County, California by Peter J. Bryant and Larry Orsak, School of Biological
http://mamba.bio.uci.edu/~pjbryant/biodiv/bflyplnt.htm
BUTTERFLIES AND THEIR LARVAL FOODPLANTS (Animation by Lisa Konrad Photographed and compiled by Peter J. Bryant pjbryant@uci.edu ) Department of Developmental and Cell Biology, University of California, Irvine, CA 92717 Butterflies can be attracted to your garden by providing suitable flowers from which they can obtain nectar. Most butterflies can utilize a wide variety of flowers, including those of many cultivated varieties, as nectar sources. However, a more critical need is for the plants which provide food for the larval (caterpillar) stages, and most species will accept only one or a few species of plants at this stage. If a butterfly is found near your area, you can probably attract it and increase its population by planting the correct foodplants for the caterpillars. Although the caterpillars will feed on the leaves of these plants, the damage is usually minor and only temporary. Caterpillars of some species feed on plants which are usually considered weeds, and you can benefit populations of these species by not removing all of the weeds. The following table lists the larval foodplants for most of the butterfly species and a few of the more interesting moths found in Orange County. Many of the listed plants are available from Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano.

Hummingbirds and Butterflies
Updated 8/22/95 Backyards and other small areas may have a limited value when managing for larger species like deer, but they are extremely valuable for many other species. With planning and a little work, these areas can easily be managed to benefit nectar-seekers such as hummingbirds and butterflies. By promoting plant species and habitat components that are beneficial to hummingbirds and butterflies, you can insure their colorful presence. This publication highlights key steps to protect and provide the important habitat areas needed by hummingbirds and butterflies.
Figure 1. A hummingbird. Getting Started It is important to have a soil test done on potential garden sites before beginning to plant. Soil tests are free through the NC Department of Agriculture Soil Testing Lab. Soil test information and interpretive material is available from your Cooperative Extension Service Center. Extension agents can recommend soil amendments and plants adapted to your area. After a site is chosen, sketch out a garden plan. The plan should show the arrangement of flower groups, the location of water sources, basking areas, and if needed, artificial feeder sites. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to sunny areas. Improve shaded garden sites by opening the canopy.

This land is home to more than 500 birds and 330 butterfly species , 37 of these endemic to this region. According to Birdlife International, it is also one of eight 'centres of endemism ' in the Indian Subcontinent. Comprising of the largest in India, the Southern or Western Ghats Birdwing ( Troides minos ) with a wingspan of about 25 cms to the smallest, the Grass Jewel ( Zizula hylax ) with only 1.5 to 2 cm wingspan, the Kerala butterfly fauna is rich, diverse and scientifically very interesting. Many Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala (officially protected wildlife parks) are a lepidopteran delight - the famous among them being Periyar Tiger Reserve, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary. That is not all - Kerala's beautiful countryside can boast of a vast and fascinating variety of butterflies - be it in the myriad plantation areas or your own backyard. For those interested in the butterfly life of Kerala, it would be possible to organise dedicated tours in the company of our experts. The tour will take you through some of the most beautiful regions of India and lasts from 2 days to 15 days. Our guides are well versed in spotting the endemics as well as the most elusive ones.

Butterflies Easier - Butterflies are thin insects with four large, often bright colored wings. Harder - Butterflies and moths comprise the insect group called Lepidoptera. However, butterflies are different from moths. There are over 15,000 different species (kinds) of butterflies. Rain forests have the most kinds of butterflies; but butterflies live in woodlands, fields, prairies. Some even live on cold mountaintops, while many others live in hot deserts. Butterflies live almost everywhere in the world.

http://www.obvious.fsnet.co.uk/butterfly/butterfly.htm
The University of the Bleeding Obvious: Flappery The flap of a butterfly's wings in Central Park could ultimately cause an earthquake in China. So say the proponents of chaos theory, who use 'the butterfly effect' to describe how small and apparently insignificant incidents can set in motion a chain of events with far reaching consequences. The butterfly effect has, until now, been cited only as an illustration, but Professor Jim Spanners of the Pennsylvania Institute for Making Stuff Up takes it seriously, and believes that butterflies are directly responsible for most of the world's major problems. He is urging authorities to act swiftly in order to prevent imminent disaster. So far his warnings have been largely dismissed by everyone except for a select group of people who don't get out much. Recently, in order to underscore his concerns, he published a twelve stage example of exactly how such a catastrophic sequence of events might run: Event One:
A butterfly - possibly a cabbage white, or similar variety - spreads itself across a leaf in New York's Central Park. It stretches lazily in the warm sunshine and contentedly flaps its wings. This motion generates a small current of air, barely perceptible, but sufficient enough to divert the course of an airborne spore. The spore lands beside a pathway and begins to germinate.
