Butterflies of Ireland
This site contains a photographic guide to the Butterflies of Ireland. The butterfly species are divided into four groups: Small, Brown, White and Multi-coloured butterflies. There is a section entitled 'General Information' which should be read first, as among other information, it gives details of the format of this guide. Finally, there is a section giving details of some Butterfly Farms in Ireland.
This site is a more comprehensive guide compared to the original site which contained a basic guide to Irish Butterflies. Butterfly Season - Spring 2003
The butterfly season will soon be starting in earnest (Holly Blues appear in March). There has been the usual few sightings up to now of Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock butterflies. Last year (2002) was such a bad year for butterfly sightings, due to the miserable weather, we can look forward to a much better season with (hopefully) plenty of sightings. Other 'Spring' species include Orange Tips, Speckled Woods and some Whites. These pictures of a female Holly Blue on a Euonymus bush were taken last year on Sunday, 7th April 2002 using a digital camera. The distinctive black margin on the fore-wings of this first-generation female will be more pronounced in the second-generation. Last year was a particularly good year for Holly Blues in Ireland and this is likely to be repeated this year.

Photo of a Monarch butterfly on milkweed
Photo of a Milkweed Plant The monarch butterfly is sometimes called the "milkweed butterfly" because its larvae eat the plant. In fact, milkweed is the only thing the larvae can eat! If you'd like to attract monarchs to your garden, you can try planting milkweed (if you live in the right area). You can purchase milkweed seed online from the Butterfly Farm close window when done purchasing to return to this screen Adult female monarchs lay their eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves. These eggs hatch, depending on temperature, in three to twelve days. The larvae feed on the plant leaves for about two weeks and develop into caterpillars about 2 inches long.

ALL ABOUT BUTTERFLIES! What is a Butterfly? Butterfly or Moth? Senses Defense Mechanisms ... Butterfly Gardens What is a Butterfly?
Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. The three body parts are the head, thorax (the chest), and abdomen (the tail end). The butterfly's body is covered by tiny sensory hairs. The four wings and the six legs of the butterfly are attached to the thorax. The thorax contains the muscles that make the legs and wings move. FLYING Swallowtails are strong fliers. Butterflies are very good fliers. They have two pairs of large wings covered with colorful, iridescent scales in overlapping rows. Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are the only insects that have scaly wings. The wings are attached to the butterfly's thorax (mid-section). Veins support the delicate wings and nourish them with blood.

Ecological zones
Butterflies Dragonflies Moths ... Publications Larva of Great Orange Tip Sri Lanka is a tropical island that lies off the south eastern tip of India, just north of the equator. It is approximately 250 miles long by 150 miles wide. Though small, it has varied climatic and geographical zones. From the capital city of Colombo, within a distance of 70 miles as the crow flies, one goes from sea level to over 8000 feet. The changes in elevation, annual rainfall, and varying soil types has given rise to a diversity of plant species and corresponding diversity of butterflies. The ecological zones range from coastal lowlands to montane forests. The fauna and flora of Sri Lanka contain many endemic species as well as species that are closely related to those of the Indian sub-continent. We hope that this site inspires you to take a greater interest in the world of insects and their conservation. If you like to share your sightings of Sri Lankan butterflies and dragonflies, please send us your information.

December 1999 Planting gardens with flowers that attract butterflies is a natural way to attract these lovely creatures to your yard, garden, patio, or even window sill. Brightly colored butterflies provide interest to your surroundings and are also effective crop and flower pollinators. Your butterfly garden will also attract birds and other wildlife. Before you begin your butterfly garden it is important to know something about butterflies and about their life cycles, biology, and behavior. Butterfly Life Cycle All butterflies have the same general life cycle, consisting of four life stages: egg, larva (the caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult (the butterfly). Each stage has special food and environmental needs. The cycle begins when butterflies deposit eggs, which they may do in the spring, summer, or fall. Eggs differ in size and shape depending on the species. Butterflies can lay anywhere from 200 to 1,500 eggs depending on the species. Some are laid singly, some in clusters. A good nectar source is important to the adult's ability to produce large numbers of eggs. In most cases, eggs hatch within a few days of being deposited. Once a caterpillar is full size, it enters the pupal or chrysalis stage. Using silk produced by silk glands, the caterpillar attaches itself to a plant (or other object). Some butterflies, such as skippers, pupate inside a thin covering of silk and leaves. The caterpillar stays still for about a day as the pupal skin forms under the caterpillar skin. Then the old skin splits open and the pupa emerges. Pupae of some kinds of butterflies can be green or brown. The pupae of monarch butterflies are bright green.
