Each weekday on KSL Radio 1160, Fred Ball of Zions Bank highlights a Utah business from small home based businesses to large Utah based corporations. Access the latest "Speaking on Business" report below.
Family Pawn May 3, 2004 Click Here to Listen Now This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business. Although I'm aware pawnshops exist, I don't think I have ever been in one — until now. How I enjoyed my recent and educational visit at Family Pawn in St. George. Chris and Fitz Bloxham started buying and selling things and knickknacks when they were just kids. It only seemed natural for them to have a career in the pawnshop business, and they knew that the business provided a very needed and beneficial service. The pawning business has been around forever, according to Chris. He told me that monks in the 15th Century were very involved in the pawn business. Today people pawn for a variety of reasons. If funds for short-term expenses such as unexpected medical costs, auto repair bills or utility bills just aren't available, Family Pawn will advance the necessary funds after something of equal value is left in its place.

The President's Small Business Agenda The role of government is not to create wealth, but to create an environment where entrepreneurs can flourish. The President believes that low taxes and clear, sensible regulations are essential to helping all 25 million small businesses in America. Equally important, the President believes we must work to ensure that employees of small businesses have access to high-quality health care and reliable pensions. And for those small businesses that deal with the federal government, the contracting process should be fair, open, and straightforward. New Tax Incentives for Job-Creating Investments The President congratulates the Congress for already taking bipartisan action to help small businesses. The 2001 Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act and the 2002 Job Creation and Worker Assistance Act were historic steps that reduced the tax burden on small businesses and increased the prospects for economic recovery. The President believes that the following proposals would build on this strong record:

Human Resources Family Issues It is almost impossible for small business owners to separate the business from personal life. You can cope with the sometimes unwanted commingling by learning how others approach this topic. Let’s start with the positives - tax benefits. Hiring your spouse can save you some taxes. If you are a sole proprietor, a spousal employment agreement can allow you to deduct 100% of medical insurance premiums, instead of getting only 45% off income taxes and nothing off self-employment taxes. Child care credits may become available via spousal employment in some cases that might not otherwise be available. Talk to your tax advisor about all the fringe benefits possible by hiring your spouse. If you are a corporation, you can deduct your vice president / spouse’s travel expenses on business trips. Sole proprietors also have a unique relationship with their minor kids. You can hire your kids under age 18 and pay no payroll taxes. If you keep their wages low enough, they will pay no income taxes, and you can still claim them on your return. In addition, they may qualify under some fringe benefits plans. You must file the quarterly form 941 with the IRS and the annual W-2 wage statements with Social Security, and must actually write out checks to pay the kids. The kids must also perform services for the business. Not only are your own kids exempt from the payroll taxes, but also from child labor laws. Note that this benefit is NOT available to kids who work for their parents’ corporation or partnership.

Now on to some of the drawbacks. Having your spouse spend so much time with you can cause problems. You will be working and living the business together all the time. Many psychologists suggest that having spouses not work together allows for a necessary mental break that helps keep a personal relationship healthy. You should discuss the pros and cons of working together under deadlines before you actually agree to be partners or coworkers. Hiring other relatives or - worse - letting other relatives become part owners of your business can create substantial headaches. While you may be trying to provide employment and income to help out a relative, the relative can cause hard feelings in your business. Then you will most likely find it hard to fire the relative, who usually feels that employment is an entitlement. If you go this route anyway, especially with relative investors, you should discuss the situation thoroughly (including conflict resolution ideas) in advance of agreeing to let a relative join the family firm. For relative investors, sign a written agreement detailing how they will be cashed out, and how the payout will be calculated and when it will be paid. By laying out the details in advance, you will prevent any unrealistic expectations or hard feelings several years from now.

Family business centre launched
Family businesses now have a specialist resource at their disposal after the opening of a specialist centre at the University of Gloucestershire. The Centre for Families in Business has been launched by the University of Gloucestershire and business adviser Grant Thornton to provide family-owned businesses, who represent half of all UK businesses, with opportunities to learn new skills, access information and advice and meet other family-run businesses to exchange ideas. The centre will deal with the “unique challenges” that are faced by families running their own businesses, such as succession, tax planning, exit strategies, transition and conflict resolution. It is available to all businesses nationwide and also abroad.
