Buddhism and Medical Ethics: A Bibliographic Introduction

BUDDHISM AND MEDICINE
It has not gone unnoticed that the Buddhist aim of eliminating suffering coincides with the objectives of medicine (Duncan et al, 1981; Soni, 1976). The Buddhist emphasis on compassion finds natural expression in the care of the sick, and according to the Vinaya the Buddha himself stated "Whoever, O monks, would nurse me, he should nurse the sick" (Zysk, 1991:41). Buddhist clergy and laity have been involved with the care of the sick for over two thousand years. The Indian Buddhist emperor Asoka states in his second Rock Edict that provision has been made everywhere in his kingdom for medical treatment for both men and animals, and that medicinal herbs suitable for both have been imported and planted. Birnbaum (1979) and Demieville (1985) provide good general introductions to Buddhism and medicine. Buddhism appears to have played an important role in the evolution of traditional Indian medicine (Zysk, 1991), and there are many parallels between Buddhist medicine, as recorded in the Pali canon, and Aayurveda (Mitra, 1985). There are short monographs by Haldar on the scientific (1977) and public heath aspects (1992) of medicine in the Pali sources. It is likely that as Buddhism spread through Asia it would have interacted with indigenous medical traditions promoting the cross-fertilization of ideas. Redmond (1992) discusses the relationship of Buddhism to medicine from Theravaada and Mahaayaana perspectives and compares Buddhist and Daoist concepts of disease. Discussions of Tibetan medicine may be found in Clifford (1984), Dhonden (1986), and Rechung (1976), while Ohnuki-Tierney (1984) discusses illness and culture in contemporary Japan.

Agency: Agent and Action Agency is the unity of agent and action. The agent is the doer of the action, the one who acts, while the action is what the agent does. Not everything that a doer does, however, makes him an agent, nor, therefore, is everything that a doer does an action. Typically, philosophers have distinguished between actions and deeds. Deeds are things done which have effects or cause consequences in the world, although the doers of these deeds do not set out voluntarily, intentionally, deliberately or to do these things or bring about their consequences. Agents can be individual or collective. Although the paradigm of the agent is the individual, a group can also carry out an action. After all, people often do things together, coordinating with one another to bring about a specific effect.

126. Duties And Deontological Ethics [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Deontological theories are based on moral obligation that an agent has towards another person.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/d/duties.htm
Duties and Deontological Ethics A duty is a moral obligation that an agent has towards another person, such as the duty not to lie. Etymologically, duties are actions that are due to someone else, such as paying money that one owes to a creditor. In a broader sense, duties are simply actions that are morally manditory. Medieval philosophers such as Aquinas argued that we have specific duties or obligations to avoid committing specific sins. Since sins such as theft are absolute, then our duty to avoid stealing is also absolute, irrespective of any good consequences that might arise from particular acts of theft. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, many philosophers held the normative theory that moral conduct is that which follows a specific list of duties. These theories are also called deontological theories, from the Greek word deon , or duty, since they emphasize foundational duties or obligations. We find one of the first clear indications of this view in The Law of War and Peace (1625) by Dutch philosopher Hugo Grotius (1583-1645). For Grotius, our ultimate duties are fixed features of the universe, which even God cannot change, and comprise the chief obligations of natural law. Some moral theorists at the time based their list of duties on traditional lists of virtues.

An esssay dealing with how to apply ethics to the possible thinking machines of the future.

Ethics for Machines
(c) 2000 J. Storrs Hall, PhD.
"A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human to come to harm." Isaac Asimov's First Law of Robotics
The first book report I ever gave, to Mrs. Slatin's first grade class in Lake, Mississippi in 1961, was on a slim volume entitled "You Will Go to the Moon". I have spent the intervening years thinking about the future. The four decades that have passed have witnessed advances in science and physical technology that would be incredible to a child of any other era. I did see my countryman Neil Armstrong step out onto the moon. The processing power of the computers that controlled the early launches can be had today in a $5 calculator. The genetic code has been broken and the messages are being read and in some cases, rewritten. Jet travel, then a perquisite of the rich, is available to all. That young boy that I was spent time on other things besides science fiction. My father was a minister, and we talked (or in many cases, I was lectured and questioned!) about good and evil, right and wrong, what were our duties to others and to ourselves. In the same four decades, progress in the realm of ethics has been modest. Almost all of it has been in the expansion of inclusiveness, broadening the definition of who deserves the same consideration you always gave your neighbor. I experienced some of this first hand as a schoolchild in '60's Mississippi. Perhaps the rejection of wars of adventure can also be counted. And yet those valuable advances to the contrary notwithstanding, ethics, and its blurry reflection politics, has seemed to stand still compared to the advances of physical science. This is particularly true if we take the twentieth century as a whole it stands alone in history as the "Genocide Century", the only time in history where governments killed their own people by the millions, not just once or in one place but repeatedly, all across the globe.

This primer provides a general framework for freeing any information covered under copyright and patent laws.
    http://www.ram.org/ramblings/philosophy/fmp/copying_primer.html
A primer on the ethics of "intellectual property"
on this website and elsewhere , is copiable without restrictions. Over the last several years, especially after I wrote the Free Music Philosophy in mid-1993, I have been arguing about the so-called "rights to intellectual property" on the Internet. Generally, if you're on the same wavelength, the argument proceeds well and is even illuminating at times. But sometimes you're arguing with people who lack the fundamentals in logic or intellectual property issues and pointing out their lack of logic leads to the reverse accusation and the argument degenerates into a situation where each person accuses the other of being illogical. Sometimes, people (intentionally or otherwise) misunderstand you, because you have to make arguments you've spent years thinking about in a few posts, usually under some time constraint. This is not meant as an insult to anyone; some of it I think stems from using this medium for communication. What I have done here is provide some logical rationale for many of the statements I might make, in a question and answer format. Why is the abridgement of the [freedom of] copying, use, distribution, and modification of published information unethical?

to Bible Teachings This Christian Internet site seeks to present articles, books, confessions, etc., that reflect Bible views on both doctrinal and practical areas of discipleship. These are written in a clear and simple style, supported by abundant Scripture, so the Lord can use His Word to tell His own story. Let us explain about our church background. Although we have connections to churches coming out of the Swiss and Dutch state churches during the Reformation, we do not wish to give the impression that this site is only denominational in nature. We recognize that no denomination is fully faithful to the Bible's teachings. What is important is to present strong, biblically oriented writings. Most of our articles are written by people of Anabaptist persuasion. The important fact, however, is that all of our contributing writers seek to be biblically based in their writings. These Bible-practicing Christians were tagged with the Anabaptist name because they rebaptized those who had been baptized as infants or as unbelievers by the state churches. This allowed the state to persecute and put the Anabaptist believers to death under an A.D. 529 Roman law. These disciples never used the term

As education and literacy spread in China and scholars became influential as ministers of rulers, philosophers also began to flourish. In the late sixth century BC two of the greatest philosophers of all time emerged in China - Lao-zi, the founder of Daoism, and Confucius, whose philosophy and religion came to dominate China for more than two millennia.
    Confucius
Confucius is the Latinized form of Kong Fu-zi, which means Kong the master. Confucius was born in the small state of Lu in 551 BC and died in 479 BC. This was a time of turmoil, political intrigue, and numerous small wars in the last part of the Spring and Autumn era. Assassinations, bribery, adultery, and other crimes were common even though punishments were severe. In Lu three families contended for the hereditary rulership, while numerous educated aristocrats sought positions in the government, and many suffered poverty. Confucius was brought up as a gentleman, who took up music, archery, and fishing, although he said he fished without a net and would not shoot at a bird at rest. He was so absorbed in music that once he did not know the taste of meat for three months. He also learned to do practical jobs of humble people such as keeper of the stores and head of the pastures. However, most of the time Confucius was not able to find an official position though he was willing to do anything that did not involve wrong-doing. Perhaps it was his ethical concerns that prevented him from being useful to the rulers of his time. Instead he occupied his time in what he loved the most - the pursuit of learning.
