    Report Summary
The 2000 National Business Ethics Survey (NBES) is a nationally representative telephone survey of 1,500 U.S. employees. The NBES asks employees about formal ethics programs as well as informal ethics practices in the organizations for which they work. The 2000 survey has two main purposes. The first is to gather reliable data on key ethics and compliance outcomes for use in benchmarking by interested organizations. The second is to help identify and to better understand ethics issues that are important to employees. In fulfilling these purposes, the 2000 NBES provides continuity in measuring traditional ethics and compliance outcomes and also gathers new data in areas of emerging interest.
While there are already a number of studies on the national level that focus on what organizational leaders and managers think about business ethics, these 2000 NBES data offer opportunities to learn about and from the perceptions of employees

You don't have much time to worry about world hunger and nuclear disarmament when you're building a business. But that's not to say entrepreneurs can't be socially minded on a lesser scale. You'll see in the following articles that it is possible to do good and do business. Plenty of company owners spend time and money serving the community, cleaning up the environment, and even fighting oppressive economic systems. Their good actions may come back to them in the form of higher than average employee morale, more customer loyalty, and better public relations.

Business Statistics Although half of employees surveyed in a national study admitted to acting unethically or illegally while on the job, 60 percent believed that ethical dilemmas are an avoidable consequence of doing business, a major shift of opinion from the last two decades, when the majority of people believed "business ethics" was an oxymoron. The survey, released by the Ethics Officer Association and the American Society for Chartered Life Underwriters and Chartered Financial Consultants, found that workers believe "better communication and dialogue" (73 percent) and "serious commitment by management to address issue" (71 percent) were the best solutions to the problem. EOA News, Spring 1997 In a survey done by The Wall Street Journal International Edition, Bozell Worldwide, and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (the leading business newspaper in Japan) to determine what "corporate goodness" means showed that 90 percent of the public interviewed considers "ethics and values" to be "very important" in building a reputation for good corporate citizenship. Eighty-three percent believed "quality products and services" to be "very important." EOA News

HOME The University of St. Thomas is one of a handful of schools in the country that devotes significant resources to programs emphasizing ethics education. To challenge students to consider how they might act when faced with questions of right and wrong, we require an introduction to business ethics in both the undergraduate and MBA programs. To enable deeper study, we offer electives at both levels. To encourage the integration of ethics across the curriculum, we are engaged in a comprehensive faculty development effort. To help executives explore how the ideas of the world's greatest thinkers benefit contemporary decision making, St. Thomas offers Great Books and Global Leadership seminars in the style of the Aspen Institute.

Jewish Business Ethics: An Introductory Perspective
    (Part I)
Rabbi Yitzchok Breitowitz NOTE: Because the talk covered many areas of business ethics, this article will confine itself to introductory perspectives. Specific areas will be covered in future editions. It should also be noted that this article is a transcript of an oral presentation to a diverse audience which accounts for its informal style. Many of us have a mistaken idea of what is within the compass or scope of our religious traditions. People know that lighting Chanukah candles is something you talk about with a rabbi, observance of the Shabbat, the laws of Kashrut, etc., but many people have an attitude that if I don't tell the rabbi how to run his business, the rabbi shouldn't tell me how to run mine. Very often, we live fragmented dichotomized lives where what we do in the office from 9 to 5 (or if you're a workaholic from 8 to 7), is our own private affair and then at home we observe the holidays, or the rituals of Judaism, on the weekends, or three-days-a-year, or whatever. But, what is the concept of serving God with all of your possessions? Certainly, God does not require us to take oaths of poverty. God does not require us to renounce material wealth. So, how does one serve God with all of his possessions?
