Obsessed with the results of so-called high-stakes testing (which, in fact, have turned into minimum competency tests that almost any middle-class kid can pass with a modicum of effort), educators have forgotten that what schools offer outside the classroom also is essential to a total education. As schools face budget crunches and states, in a misguided attempt to raise standards, load their curriculums with more science, math and social-studies requirements, programs in music, drama and journalism are the first to face budget cuts or, in some cases, elimination. From California to Massachusetts, parents have had to organize to save performing arts programs, often raising or donating money themselves to keep the programs alive.

A is for activities that teach kids to read Dear teachers This week we publish a second reading assessment schedule to help you monitor your young learners' reading progress. (The first assessment schedule was published in our January 27 issue. A third assessment scheduled will be published in two weeks' time.) Evaluating learners' understanding of the conventions of print and their phonic knowledge and reading behaviour is essential as it helps determine their strengths and weaknesses. You can then refer to your evaluation records to develop a reading programme that meets your learners' abilities and needs. The assessment schedule below monitors phonic knowledge. The ability to identify and discriminate between sounds, differentiate between words and sentences, and analyse and synthesise words are all vital reading skills. The following activities will help Grade 1 learners achieve these skills, but they can easily be adapted for all Foundation Phase learners. First-time readers understand letters, words and sentences only as unfamiliar markings. Before they can start reading, they must appreciate that text conveys meaning. Point out words in stories, count the words in sentences and draw attention to the spaces between words. Other prerequisites are the ability to perceive visual differences and to discriminate between sounds.

Have you ever ...
Wiped out your lawn along with the weeds figuring that, if some lawn treatment was good, more would be better? Made a second trip to the store because the product you bought the first time turned out not to be right for the job? Made a dash for fresh air after mixing two cleaning products? Sprayed your tomatoes for bugs, only to find that the spray you used wasn't supposed to be used on vegetables? If you've ever "been there, done that," you already know that reading the label first can save you time, trouble, and money. This is why EPA, the specialty pesticide industry, environmental groups, and state and local governments started the Consumer Labeling Initiative to make labels easier to read and understand. However, no label can do its job if no one pays attention to it. The key message that EPA and its partners in the CLI want to get across now is to "Read the Label FIRST!

[an error occurred while processing this directive] Classroom Case Study
A case study of learning is an in-depth look at teaching and how learners respond. It typically includes a description of the activities that provide the context for learning. A case study report may be organized in whatever way seems most appropriate to the study, but often includes the following elements:
(1) Your own inquiry
What you did to learn more about the content or processes that learners were investigating, and what you learned about these.
(2) Unit goals
How you or others wanted learners to develop as a consequence of their engagement with some activities, for example,
  • to be able to use a communication technology effectively to learn how the first parliamentary system arose to learn how the English language evolved to learn about the adaptation of animals to their environments, to learn that each person has a unique set of fingerprints and that this uniqueness makes it possible to find missing people or track down criminals, to be able to articulate their theories about why some things float and others sink, and to propose ways to test those theories

What Your Community Can Do To Support Schools And Family Involvement In Education
Combat alcohol, drugs, and violence These problems threaten children's chances for success in far too many of our communities. Prevention programs work best when parents, students, schools, law enforcement officials, and communities join together to fight back. For example, schools and community members can provide mentoring and after-school programs to give children safe havens from violence and alternatives to drugs. Communities can also put students on the right path by providing a quality education and school-to-work programs that lead to college, technical training, or good jobs after high school. A future filled with hope and promise is the best answer to the hopelessness of drugs. Solving drug and safety problems is a difficult task, and each community will have to find its own answers. But when communities unite, real progress can be made. Teach parenting skills Programs for parents can include academic classes, literacy training, career preparation, early childhood education, children's health, and assistance in finding helpful services in the community. When adults become involved in parenting education, parent-child communication improves and children with developmental delays in speech, social skills, and other areas overcome these challenges more readily. High-quality parenting programs engage parents early, sometimes even before their child's birth, and focus on the critical early years of a child's development.
