The group has made postcards with leaf prints for the local elderly home and is developing an historical flowerbed with plants from the travels of Lewis and Clark. The group has completed the Level One curriculum. Once the WV Diggers begin the new Wildlife Gardener curriculum, the students will be assigned kindergarten "buddies" and will work together as a group to turn a portion of their play area into an NWF Certified Schoolyard Habitat. The kids have also selected a garden area that will be established and dedicated to a young classmate, Travis Walker, who lost his life in a tragic car accident in the fall of 2003. Currently, the students have their greenhouse full of plants they are caring for that they nurtured from seed or have transplanted for fundraising purposes. Recently the group celebrated thecompletion of a 6ft x 12ft greenhouse. The ceremony included speeches made by WV State Agricultural Commissioner Gus Douglas and the Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs at WVSU, Dr. Orlando McMeans.

Welcome to my Values/Character Education site. If you are looking for teaching ideas, classroom activities, lessons, articles, links and resources for Values/Character Education - you are at the right place. I created this site to help Values teachers (like me) and students find appropriate Values Education materials on the web. There are lots of interesting and informative sites that I visited. However, most of the links I included in this site were chosen specifically with the Filipino learners and educators in mind. I have designed this site as a learning tool for myself and as a helping tool for other teachers and would be teachers who love to teach Values Education as much as I do. I hope you enjoy exploring these resources as much as I have enjoyed finding them and putting them together for you. Maraming Salamat!

    June, 2001
    by Michele Meyer
Enrich your child's reading writing, science, and math skills through books, travel, museum visits, experiments, crafts, and games this summer. The vacation months are an ideal time because learning can be hands-on, outdoors, self-directed, discovery-oriented, creative, and messy. Those are all things you can't often do in school. "When kids are in school, knowledge is very theoretical," says Laurel Schmidt, author of Seven Times Smarter: 50 Activities, Games and Projects to Develop the Seven Intelligences of Your Child (2001). "But at home, they learn through play, putting in action the skills that they learned in school." Here are some ways to make your child's summer vacation time entertaining yet educationaland rarely expensive. To keep things interesting, we've suggested a schedule of activities throughout the summer months. Follow our calendar, or create your own to fit your family's needs. june Reading and writing * Make reading a habit. Encourage kids to have a ritual of reading for the first half hour or hour of the day after they awake, and at certain other times, perhaps after naps.

    The Learning Garden
Welcoming all home schooling parents and children in the St. Tammany, Louisiana area to grow with us.
Links Are in the Picture Below
Helping our children learn and grow across the St. Tammany area. The Learning Garden Home school group was formed in 2000 to give home schooling families in the St. Tammany Parish Louisiana a place to go where their children can play and the parents could share ideas, concerns and enjoy each others company. We believe that all children need interaction with other children and that all homeschooling parents need support and feedback from other homeschooling families. Our group provides a forum for children and parents to meet. We created the Learning Garden to include members of any spiritual or religious background. We envision our group as made up of every social and cultural background. We do not endorse any particular method of learning or curriculum, but we support each other in our choices of educational methods and styles. We want our children to learn about people as individuals as well as the cultures from which they came. Our families share their wisdom and talents with each other, and we all respect each other’s differences and choices in education and life styles. The Learning Garden is a Variety Garden and we recognize that "Variety is the Spice of Life".

These methods have been used for my own child and children in the home child care center I used to run. This program works. The children become empowered and so proud of themselves when they develop these skills, and are extremely ready to begin school. The course begins with very basic skills and covers many skills a child needs to develop in the preschool and kindergarten years and includes learning to read, which isn’t often included in preschool courses. This is an accelerated course for preschool children, and is comprehensive even for a kindergarten curriculum. There will be suggestions for each level and subject how to adjust the curriculum according to your student’s age, grade, and/or abilities.

    • All materials are dropped off ahead of time. A group of TEACH volunteers spends the afternoon setting up tables and sorting the curriculum by subject and grade level. We have the 2-hour sale in the evening. After the sale, everyone picks up their unsold materials.
    • Instead of making money by renting tables which must be manned by each individual family, as is done at other used curriculum sales, TEACH raises money from the sale by collecting the money for the materials sold and deducting 5% of those sales when we write the checks to those who sold curriculum. This money is used to purchase additional resources for our Resource Center.
