BUSINESS COMMUNICATION HANDBOOK 5/ED
Following the success of previous editions, the fifth edition of The Business Communication Handbook continues to provide a thorough understanding of the underpinning knowledge that supports the application of good communication skills in the workplace.
This book is readable, user-friendly and designed to build competencies in communication. It helps you to understand communication theory and, in turn, practice effective communication techniques. This revised edition includes new material to help you make the most of communicating through technology - Internet, Intranet, e-mail and e-Commerce.
The Business Communication Handbook has been fully tested with groups in the classroom and in the workplace and is structured to maximise learning and the transfer of learning into the application of skills. Features include learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, and an icon-driven learning path, leading one activity to the next. Margin notes clarify the development of key topics, and key words are highlighted in the text and defined in a comprehensive glossary. Case studies and learning activities encourage active reinforcement of the concepts covered.
The fifth edition is closely aligned to the National Communication Skills Modules in order to build nationally recognised competencies. Chapters and activities have a workplace emphasis, making the text highly suitable for use in national training packages.

UNITED STATES
Business Communication and Public Relations for ESL Students
by Mark McElreath and Valeria Shadrova

Russia has established its first four-year degree program in public relations at the Electrotechnical University in St. Petersburg. Most of the teachers are ESL specialists and are faculty members in the university's Department of Foreign Languages. They use English to teach Western concepts of professional public relations because much of the body of knowledge in this field is in English (PRSA, 1988, 1990, 1993).
As the subject is taught at most major universities in the West and-within the past few years-at universities in newly emerging market economies in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and elsewhere, public relations is considered an important management function that uses all forms of communication to establish and facilitate understanding between an organization and its many publics (Cutlip, Center, Broom, 1993). The best university programs teach students to recognize and criticize heavy-handed propaganda and unethical uses of advertising and public relations techniques. They also focus on legal and ethical ways that businesses communicate today (Design for Public Relations Education, 1993).
The Russian students admitted to their nation's first university program in public relations speak English as their second language. During their four-year course of study they learn at least one other language, most likely German, French, Swedish, or Finnish. Consequently, these students are learning to communicate as public relations practitioners in three or more languages.

    How to Teach Adult Learners
by D. Verne Morland Managing Partner
ROI Learning Services Abstract: At most schools of education aspiring teachers are taught the elements of pedagogy – the art of teaching children. Many aspects of teaching adults are fundamentally different than those employed in teaching children and for this reason a new word gained currency in the late 20th century – andragogy . This article highlights the important principles in teaching adults and suggests how they can be applied to business training. The Meaning of Pedagogy According to the American Heritage Dictionary the word pedagogy is derived from the Greek paidaggos which referred to the slave who took children to and from school. Although commonly understood to be "the art or profession of teaching" [1] most schools of education train new teachers in methods and techniques that are most relevant to the teaching of children. Some critics even suggest that "pedagogy embodies teacher-focused education." [2] The History of the Term Andragogy The German educator Dr. Alexander Kapp coined the term

    BEACH BALL PRACTICE ACTIVITIES
    GRADES: 1-7
Students with disabilities often need more practice than other students to master skills. Using a "programmed" beach ball is a fun way to fit drill and practice in without boring the kids. This idea was shared with me at a math workshop I attended last summer.
    MATERIALS:
    • beach balls (as many as you can affordthey're very versatile) permanent marking pen
    METHOD:
  • Blow up the beach ball and hold it with the air hole facing upward. Beach balls are already nicely sectioned (kind of like an orange). So, all you have to do next is draw lines horizontally with a permanent marking pen to create several little boxes on your beach ball. Program the boxes with various information that students need to practice (ideas follow). Some Ideas: In each box, write a number from one to nine. Throw the ball to students and ask them what numbers their thumbs are on. When they tell you, ask them to either add, subtract, multiply or divide. This is an easy activity to individualize because you can ask different students to do different things with the numbers. I also found that it helps students with mathematics vocabulary. (Some of my students always say "take away" or "times" rather than the proper vocabulary). You could even say "find the product" to further reinforce vocabulary.
