What child has not wanted to have a lemonade stand to earn money, or asked you what he/she could do around the house to earn some money? Chances are, you know a child that fits this description, and have to smile just recalling these episodes. While we have had more than our share of fun money-making ventures when the children were small, we are working now to prepare them for a successful life as adults, with academic preparation as well as providing a sound and practical financial education. While we learn about so many things in our early years, there are a few things that I wish I had learned about when I was younger. Things like the importance of saving money (the power of compound interest), how to get the most out of each dollar, what does it mean to earn or pay interest on money, what is debt and what does out family think about it? All of these questions, and they aren’t typically addressed in many families across the country. The children are exposed to a limited degree in high school economics, and perhaps they begin to figure out taxes when they earn their first paycheck as an hourly employee (WHY are they withholding all of these taxes, Mom?!) When I look back on how little we knew when my husband and I got married and bought our first house, life insurance, a car, etc – I am determined that our children will have more knowledge than we did as they make such important decisions. We had no idea of what was involved in buying or selling things of value, of what it meant to have a 15-year mortgage instead of a 30-year mortgage, of the importance of making our money work for us for the future. We were clueless when it came to making business decisions, understanding contracts, the importance of finance, and so much more. We had never been taught these things in school, or by our parents. I guess that everyone figured that we would learn on an “as-needed” basis – yikes! We were determined that our children were not going to have to face these same decisions without an idea of how to make good financial and business decisions.

Teaching kids business tips; Sixth-grader's bright future
Tampa columnist HOOPER E-mail: Click here Archive By ERNEST HOOPER, Times Columnist Published May 13, 2004 Alex Sink said she had never asked someone for $1-million. In the end, she barely had to ask. The kids at Junior Achievement's Enterprise Village in Largo handled the sales pitch just fine. Last year, Sink became Junior Achievement chair for Hillsborough County's new $7-million Enterprise Village, where fifth-grade students will play adults for a day and run their own businesses. The center will be patterned after the Enterprise Village at the Gus A. Stavros Institute in Largo. But who would be the Gus Stavros of Hillsborough County? Sink set out to find someone on this side of the bay willing to donate $1-million and lend their name to the new facility. She wanted a well-respected business leader with experience in public service and a reputation for philanthropy.

Small Business: Owners should plan for vacations (kids included)
Wednesday, May 05, 2004 By Joyce M. Rosenberg, The Associated Press
NEW YORK With summer not far off, small business owners should be thinking about vacations for themselves and their children. Many business owners, especially new entrepreneurs, tend to discount the need for their own vacations, and that's a mistake. Everyone needs some down time, and most owners find they work better when they've had some time to relax and enjoy a change in scenery. Many of them also worry about being away what if a customer or client needs something? Marcia Golden, a partner in the New York marketing firm DJD/Golden, likened taking a vacation to a new parent adjusting to leaving a new baby. She recalled that in the early days of running her own business, her feeling was, "God forbid the clients think we have a life." Golden said she and her husband didn't tell clients they were away, and so, "In the beginning a lot of vacation time was spent putting out fires for clients from whatever part of the country we might be at." Years later, she's more comfortable letting clients know she'll be on vacation. And she found that, "People are very respectful of that." Golden does give her cell phone number to some clients for emergency use and handles some problems when she's away; but she has much less of a working vacation than in the past.
