THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY
From an Adult Viewpoint....
It often seems that all children do is play! They play until they are five or six, then they go off to school and start to learn. They play until they are big enough to really begin to do things. So it seems to grown-ups.
From a Child's Viewpoint....
Play takes on a very different meaning. Play to a child IS learning! They learn to play and play to learn. Play is terribly important to a child. It is not a distraction. It's not something they do to take up time. It's the child's life.
At birth the infant is a pioneer setting forth to explore a very new and very strange place. She does not know how the world works. She does not know that when you drop something it goes down, that balls roll, or that things far away look smaller than they really are. Infants are born beginners in life. They have to set about learning everything! And learning everything about everything!!
Not only does the newborn not know these worldly things, she doesn't know that she can learn to do the things she needs to do to get along in the world. She doesn't know that she can learn to turn over, sit up, walk, feed herself, dress herself, ride a bike, be a friend, or even talk.

Front page Power Tools How-To Classroom Management Getting Down to Business O h, the excitement of a new year! Imagine those hallways the first day back... everyone talking, laughing, comparing schedules, comparing lunches, greeting old friends and meeting new ones. With all the hustle and bustle, how in the world are you ever going to get them to be quiet once the bell rings? Everyone can probably agree that on the first day, you might not get them quiet right away! But as the year starts up, now is the time to get into a groove, and form habits that will be healthy and helpful for everyone involved. How do you kick off the morning? ( Tell us, we'd love to hear your answer! ) Across the board, many of the methods are similar. Board work is a popular way to get students focused as they take their seats, and relaxing music is also popular. Bath and body stores sell wonderful aromatherapy candles that can help bring a calm to the room. There are also similar types of relaxing potpourri, light bulb rings, aroma jars and oils. All of these things contribute to the atmosphere without you having to direct attention to them, unlike board work. Note, however, that some businesses and schools have banned perfumes, and some adhere to strict fire prevention rules as well, so you should check before plugging in your potpourri pot.

Jeff Wuorio If you're reading this column, chances are you're giving serious thought to a home-based business. And it's likely you have children in varying numbers and sizes around that home. Hold on. Does this spell the end of your work-at-home fantasies? Are kids and home-based businesses like oil and water, or politics and polite conversation? By no means. I can attest to that. I've owned a home-based business for 17 years and for roughly half of that time I've had one (and, later, a second) kidlet in the work vicinity. But that's not to suggest that children and home businesses fold together naturally. It takes some planning, flexibility and, perhaps above all, guidelines. Here are some tips to get you started.

Power Trip / Christopher Elliott I just got a call from the producer of a popular TV daytime talk show inviting me to appear as a guest. The topic: traveling with children. I made up some excuse about being busy. But I wasn't completely honest with her. When I wrote the column in question, I didn't have any children. Now I'm the father of a six-month old boy, and I take him almost everywhere with me.

But that's not to suggest that children and home businesses fold together naturally. It takes some planning, flexibility and, perhaps above all, guidelines. Here are some tips to get you started.
Break the news that you're in business.
First things first: Hold a family meeting to discuss your home-based business. Kim Gordon, author of "Bringing Home the Business: The 30 Truths Every Home Business Owner Must Know," notes this gives you the opportunity to cover three essential topics — how the home office will be used, the times when the office will be off-limits to children and what to expect when you are working.
"You should cover everything from friends coming over during business hours to whether they can run the vacuum or the dishwasher," she says. "If you don't, these topics can flare up four to six months down the road."

Note: Direct quotes are in quotation marks.

What's the best way for parents and their children to get in touch with you?
A picture and resume is best, and the picture doesn't need to be professional, a snapshot will do. If there's no resume, then include something with vital statistics, special skills and telephone numbers.
    What sort of special skills?
Musical theatre skills are very important. What sports they play is also something he likes to see.
Why would you bring in one kid more than another, and is it hard for a kid to get seen? Any picture and resume that notes the child can sing and move will usually result in an appointment to come in. It's generally easier for kids to be brought in than adults, and we're always looking. Kids grow up, their voices change, they move on.... "It should be the kid dragging the parent through the door, not the other way around."

There's still something to be said for good old-fashioned brain power. "What I try to do is buy toys that make kids do something," Ford said. "Sometimes, it's the old-fashioned toys that are better." You won't find video tapes at Kids' Ketch, but you will find plastic models, games, construction sets, rockets, science kits and puzzles. Battery-powered items are also rare in the store. The inventory is unique in an age when most children are entertained simply by sitting in front of a television set. "I think kids are entertained too much," Ford said. "I think they appreciate in the long run these kinds of toys." It was frustration at not being able to find quality, mind-stimulating toys for her children that led Ford to open Kids' Ketch eight years ago. After searches at large toy stores proved fruitless, Ford opened a business of her own, stocking the very items she had difficulty finding. She first operated a small 400-square-foot shop in the Jetty building before moving into a larger space in the Lewes Mercantile Building on Second Street.

Baltimore 21215 doesn't have the same cachet as Beverly Hills 90210. If you're cruising through this zip code, you probably took a wrong turn off I-83, and you're passing drug dealers and abandoned row houses. Residents here have the highest rate of welfare dependence in the city. Gildee knows what some of the kids he now helps are going through. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, after his mother abandoned him when he was 5 (he never knew his father). His grandmother, on welfare herself, knew that he and his brother needed a solid education and firm discipline (neither of which were in abundance at the local public schools) to break the cycle of poverty. She persuaded St. Ambrose to give them full scholarships. "Some donor paid for my education," he says. Today Gildee has 110 students in Kids-R-VIPs, and he sees every report card each quarter. The kids have to maintain a B average and dress appropriately for school, and they're required to volunteer for community projects, such as visiting senior citizens in a nursing home. So far Gildee has had to drop only one child for poor grades and another for attendance problems. "I want results," he says. "These kids blow away all the stereotypes that say inner-city children can't perform in school. They just need to be in a strong, disciplined place where adults care about them."

Beaters. That's what my brother and I called the cars my father bought us when we were teenagers. They were older cars that would stand up to the scrapes we'd inflict before we learned to judge where the back fender stopped and nearby obstacles began. A couple of British-made Vauxhalls took a particular pounding. These days parents think more about the dents in their children than the dents in their cars. Safety has become paramount in choosing which first car to buy. A larger vehicle is more likely to protect its occupants in a collision (although it will inflict more damage on anything it hits). Yet big vehicles mean more horsepower—always subject to abuse—and in the case of an SUV, have a greater tendency to roll over. Small cars provide a tiny protective cocoon but greater agility swerving around trouble and less chance of getting into it. My biggest complaint with both cars is that they make driving almost too much fun. As it is, your teenagers will be spending more time in the driver's seat than you'd like; you don't have to make it more enticing by outfitting them with cool wheels. As for my own kids, I plan to put them into functional used cars like a moderately used Camry or a Taurus that will provide basic transportation without giving them any incentive to drive faster or crazier than they should. I'll just make sure not to call them beaters.
