SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES The Mood Disorders Society of Canada recognizes the vital role that family and friends play in caring for and supporting people with mood disorders. We recognize that these illnesses have a significant effect on everyone they touch. Families have needs that must be understood and addressed within the health care system and they must be included as important members of the treatment team. Families also play an important role in advocacy and public education. The MDSC will continue to work closely with families and family groups to achieve our vision of a more responsive, accepting, and inclusive society. The following suggestions come from the experiences of other families who have learned to live with mood disorders as part of their lives. WHAT CAN FAMILY AND FRIENDS DO TO HELP? Support the need for treatment: Family as part of the treatment team: Ask for a meeting with the doctor to learn more about the illness, its treatment, and how you can support recovery. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Let the doctor know you have the permission of the patient to communicate concerns. You may be the first to notice early symptoms of illness such as changes in mood, sleep, social activities, concentration, irritability etc. The earlier treatment is initiated the quicker and more effective the recovery. In fact, research supports the importance of early intervention in preventing illness and promoting overall recovery.

http://www.kings.edu/fbf/
The Family Business Forum at King's College recognizes the unique joys and challenges associated with operating and sustaining a successful family enterprise in northeastern Pennsylvania. Family-owned businesses are fundamentally important to the U.S. and regional economy. In fact, 92% of all US businesses are family owned. However, the challenges can be overwhelming. Consider the following: 30% of all family owned businesses will survive into the second generation.
Only 12% will succeed to the third generation, with 3% continuing into the fourth generation and beyond
81% of business owners want their business to stay in the family, yet 25% have not completed an estate plan and 20% are not confident of the next generation's commitment to the business. The Mission of the FBF:
To provide a learning and networking forum for family businesses, program sponsors, and the students and faculty of King's College, which enhances the family business community in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

C
ontinuing our summation of the Gallup survey of family-controlled businesses undertaken by the Family Business Network of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), it is first noted that more women are found in senior management positions in family enterprises across the US than are to be found in non-family businesses. However, only 16 percent affirm that a daughter is involved in the business as opposed to one-third (34 percent) reporting a son’s involvement. Brothers are engaged in 26 percent of these businesses as opposed to only 11 percent involvement by sisters. And fathers are involved in 21 percent of family businesses in contrast with mothers’ involvement in only 11 percent. Two-thirds of the persons owning family businesses (67 percent) grew up in families that owned a business (not necessarily the current family business), one-third (35 percent) were reared in families that have owned businesses for two generations, and one-fifth (23 percent) have been raised in families that have owned businesses for three generations. This kind of social learning is believed to play a key role in the cultivation of future business owners. Three-quarters of all family business owners with children emphasize they encourage their progeny to follow in their footsteps; they either

ne of the most comprehensive and statistically valid analyses of US family businesses is the American Family Business Survey sponsored by the Arthur Andersen Center for Family Business Myth No. 1 "Unlike the popular image of family businesses as simple mom-and-pop enterprises, business leaders responding to this survey are likely to take a sophisticated and disciplined approach to managing their substantial businesses. Only 2 percent of the nearly 4000 respondents have annual sales revenues below $1 million, 44 percent have annual revenues of $10 million or more, and slightly more than a fifth report revenues exceeding $25 million annually. "Significant percentages of these family businesses engage in strategic planning, actively use boards of directors, embrace advanced technology and take advantage of family business education programs." LAS VEGAS SUN For three months, a team of two reporters and an editor investigated the court procedures, judges' behavior and rulings, and ever-increasing complaints about the court. They interviewed scores of litigants and reviewed dozens of cases. Among the most stunning cases and findings:
    • A few years after his release from prison for kidnapping his young daughter and estranged, pregnant wife and holding them at gunpoint for 18 1/2 hours, a Las Vegas man was awarded custody of his 2-year-old daughter from another marriage. Families are frustrated with needless delays and unenforced court orders that create unnecessary stress and staggering financial debt. Judges vary in efficiency. It took one judge two years to decide a custody case. Another judge puts time limits on court arguments. Some families wonder if judges even read the case records.
The series, "Family Court: Out of Order," continues Monday through Friday only in the afternoon Las Vegas SUN. The series concludes Jan. 26 in the SUN section of the Sunday paper.
