Oppose John Ashcroft

by Aaron G. Peabody September, 2002 Nine months ago I said here that I thought Mr. Bush was not doing too bad a job in the wake of September 11th. I also took the opportunity to admonish those who were saying that to disagree with the sitting president was something like an act of treason. At the time I thought that we would soon see those sentiments dwindling away. Well as it turns out there is now a law that says disagreeing with the president is something close to an act of treason or domestic terrorism. Now we see that the FBI is being granted numerous powers that they have not had since the days of J. Edgar Hoover. We also see America swept in a time of economic turmoil and it seems like every day another major company is found to be rampantly corrupt. Where does Mr. Bush stand on this? Why he says that he stands against it, of course. He also says that he is being tired of being questioned over his past involvement in similar corruptions that could practically have been a blue print for the ones we are now seeing. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, for lying to the American people in this way. Shame on you for using the current upheavals in America to seek to insure your continued political prosperity. Shame on you, shame on your administration, and shame on those in congress who we see scrabbling in the dirt with you.

"By the standard of previous presidential candidates running amid wartime quagmires, Kerry has been unusually forthcoming in his critique and prescriptions for Iraq. All Eisenhower pledged while seeking the office during the Korean conflict was, 'I will go to Korea.' In 1968 Nixon said that he had 'a secret plan' to end the Vietnam War. Kerry, by contrast, foresaw the perils of unilateralism and has consistently proposed a more workable occupation policy than Bush's. By its growing dependence on [UN envoy] Brahimi and its increasingly plaintive calls for more nations to send troops, even the administration tacitly acknowledges that Kerry was right."

Finally, I am convinced to fundamentally and permanently change our culture we need a spiritual renewal in America. One of the biggest changes in our culture came when people turned away from God and lost touch with the bedrock values of our faith not the values of one denomination or religion over another, but values which have stood the test of time: love your neighbor, give an honest day's work for an honest day's wages, don't lie or cheat or steal, respect others respect their property and their opinions and always remember you are responsible for what you say and what you do.

Washington, DC 20036 Thanks to the hugely popular Harry Potter books, many children and adults have developed a fascination with one of the bird world's most interesting families owls. Like the owls in the Harry Potter stories, which are used to deliver important messages from one character to another, real-life owls can also convey signals about the health of the habitat upon which they depend as well as the dangers these habitats face. For example, the snowy owl, which resembles the fictional owl known as Hedwig in the Harry Potter series, is one of 140 bird species found in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, America's greatest wildlife sanctuary. This spectacular refuge located in the northeast corner of Alaska's North Slope is under threat from the oil companies that want to drill there. The impacts on sensitive wildlife from oil exploration could threaten the lives of birds, polar bears, wolves, caribou and other animals. Oil development in the refuge could mean an uncertain future for snowy owls and other species that call the refuge their home.

Lt.(JG) George H. W. Bush
Lt.(JG) George Bush and the USS San Jacinto.
Naval Service:
Upon hearing of the Pearl Harbor attack, while a student at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., George Bush decided he wanted to join the Navy to become an aviator. Six months later, after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday and began preflight training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing the 10-month course, he was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve on 9 June 1943, several days before his 19th birthday; making him the youngest naval aviator then.
After finishing flight training, he was assigned to Torpedo Squadron (VT-51) as photographic officer in September 1943. As part of Air Group 51, his squadron was based on USS San Jacinto in the spring of 1944. San Jacinto was part of Task Force 58 that participated in operations against Marcus and Wake Islands in May, and then in the Marianas during June. On 19 June, the task force triumphed in one of the largest air battles of the war. During the return of his aircraft from the mission, Ensign Bush's aircraft made a forced water landing. The destroyer, USS Clarence K. Bronson, rescued the crew, but the plane was lost. On 25 July, Ensign Bush and another pilot received credit for sinking a small cargo ship.
Subsequently, Bush returned to San Jacinto in November 1944 and participated in operations in the Philippines. When San Jacinto returned to Guam, the squadron, which had suffered 50 percent casualties of its pilots, was replaced and sent to the United States. Throughout 1944, he had flown 58 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation awarded San Jacinto.

How the Texas governor made his millions

ARLINGTON, Texas (May 13) In Austin, Texas, not everyone admires Gov. George W. Bush. Radio host Jim Hightower is one such Bush critic. "He says he's a compassionate conservative," Hightower said. "I say he's a crony capitalist." "Crony capitalist?" Maybe. Multi-millionaire? Certainly. Bush started in the Texas oil business, after Yale University and Harvard Business School. Wealthy family friends and others invested millions with him, but with poor results. A 1985 disclosure shows Bush's track record: Investors got back only 45 cents on the dollar, but few complained. Investors also got tax deductions averaging more than 80 cents on every dollar invested. Those early Bush ventures were mainly tax shelters.

Barbara Bush on George W: No need to ask
August 31, 1999
Web posted at: 9:41 a.m. EDT (1341 GMT)
BRETTON WOODS, N.H. (CNN) The mother of Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush never asked her son whether he used cocaine, she said Monday in an interview with WMUR-TV. "We had no need to," former first lady Barbara Bush said. "He has always been a fabulous son." Texas Governor Bush has said he has not used illegal drugs in the past 25 years, but has refused to elaborate on his younger years. Asked whether U.S. voters have a right to know whether a presidential candidate has used drugs, the wife of former president George Bush answered, "You mean 25, 30 years ago? I don't think it matters. I think that's ridiculous, because then the next question comes, the next question." It would be more useful, she suggested, to ask about a candidate's record.

President George W. Bush's address on stem cell research
Here is the text of President George W. Bush's address from Crawford, Texas, on his decision to allow federal funding for limited stem cell research. "Good evening. I appreciate you giving me a few minutes of your time tonight so I can discuss with you a complex and difficult issue, an issue that is one of the most profound of our time. The issue of research involving stem cells derived from human embryos is increasingly the subject of a national debate and dinner table discussions. The issue is confronted every day in laboratories as scientists ponder the ethical ramifications of their work. It is agonized over by parents and many couples as they try to have children or to save children already born. The issue is debated within the church, with people of different faiths, even many of the same faith, coming to different conclusions. Many people are finding that the more they know about stem cell research, the less certain they are about the right ethical and moral conclusions.

Special Report: George W. Bush's political experience in triumph and disaster
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 2) Texas Gov. George W. Bush has raised a reported $13 million, topping the field of Republican presidential hopefuls. But as his opponents are quick to note, Bush is untested as a national candidate. Yet, besides money, Bush has some major advantages as he prepares to head out into the country on his first substantial campaign trip stellar poll numbers, great name recognition, and the experience of two presidential campaigns under his belt. In 1988 during his father's first presidential effort, Bush found out what it takes to win the White House perseverance, good strategy, and a killer instinct.
