The Honorable Don Evans: @
National Federation of Independent Business WASHINGTON, DC - Thank you, Jack, for your generous introduction. I appreciate you and Tom Musser and Dan Danner for your leadership at the NFIB and for inviting me here today. The National Federation of Independent Business is a strong voice in Washington for the entrepreneurs and small business owners who bring innovation and growth to our economy. Thanks in large part to the 25 million small businesses in America, our economy is growing, workers are finding jobs, and productivity is at historically high levels. American companies and American workers are the best in the world, and as a result, the U.S. economy is growing faster than the economies of all other major industrialized nations. I want to thank all the entrepreneurs and innovators in America who take a risk, follow their dreams and create prosperity. Your vision and tireless pursuit of success are pillars of America¹s strength. The President and I spent most of our lives in the private sector. We know what it is like to run a business and make a payroll. We have been through ups and downs and cycle-tested in a tough industry.

He received a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a Master's of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard before beginning his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975, working in the energy industry until 1986. After working on his father's successful 1988 presidential campaign, he assembled the group of partners that purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise in 1989. He served as managing general partner of the Texas Rangers until he was elected Governor on November 8, 1994. In an historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998. President Bush is married to Laura Welch Bush, a former teacher and librarian, and they have 18-year-old twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna. The Bush family also includes their dog

Vice President Implicated in "Coordinated" Effort to Award No-Bid Iraq Deal to Halliburton
    - A report in Time magazine has revealed that a "multibillion dollar Iraq oil deal" was awarded to Vice President Cheney's form Company, Halliburton Co., after an effort "coordinated" through the Vice President's office. A March 5, 2003 e-mail shows that Undersecretary of Defense for Policy in the Bush administration Douglas Feith "approved the arrangement" to award Halliburton contract. According to the e-mail, uncovered as a result of a Freedom of Information Act request by government watchdog Judicial Watch, the contract was "contingent on informing WH [White House] tomorrow. We anticipate no issues since action has been coordinated w[ith] VP's office." Three days later, Halliburton was awarded deal without the usual competitive bidding. Cheney served as CEO of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000. According to one official congressional report, he still receives about $150,000 a year in "deferred compensation" and holds over 433,000 stock options.
