Early Career. Born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Conn., he spent most of his childhood first in Midland and then in Houston, Tex. He earned his undergraduate degree from Yale, the same university his father had attended, and fulfilled his military service requirement with the Texas Air National Guard (1968-73). After earning a master’s degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School, he returned to Midland in 1975, hoping, like his father, to make his fortune in the oil industry. In 1977 he married a schoolteacher and librarian, Laura Welch (1946- ). He lost a bid for the U.S. House of Representatives the following year. Bush's rapid financial and political ascent did not begin until 1986, when he turned 40, swore off alcohol, and renewed his Christian faith. A business deal with Harken Oil and Gas, a Dallas-based firm, offered him the financial stake he needed, and after assisting in his father’s 1988 presidential campaign, he became managing partner of the Texas Rangers professional baseball team in 1989. He was elected governor of Texas in 1994, unseating a popular Democrat incumbent, and won a landslide reelection victory in 1998, the same year his brother Jeb Bush (1953- ) was elected governor of Florida.
The 2000 Election.

George Bush Senior: Battle against a shadowy enemy
Former American President George Bush Senior has warned that America's war against terrorism is likely to be a long, drawn-out conflict. In an interview for the Breakfast With Frost programme - to be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday morning - Mr Bush Senior said the current crisis was very different to the Gulf War in which he headed the international coalition to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
It's not going to be a 100-hour ground war, or a very effective TV air war
George Bush Senior The ex-president echoed the US Government's prediction that - unlike Desert Storm - the present campaign was unlikely to mirror the quick, clean kill that Washington and its allies scored in 1991. "It's not going to be a 100-hour ground war, or a very effective TV air war - it's going to be a different kind of a battle to win, but there's a determination, amongst world leaders, that we will win," he said.

    Apocalyptic president?
How the left's fear of a right-wing Christian conspiracy gets George W. Bush and today's evangelical Christians all wrong.
By Alan Jacobs, 4/4/2004 AS THE PRESIDENTIAL election draws closer, some people are asking, in ominous tones, a question: What impact does President Bush's evangelical Christianity have on his administration's policies? As an evangelical, an interpreter of literary and cultural texts, and a long-time observer of the evangelical world, I have both a personal and a professional interest in this question. And I'm here to offer an answer: Probably not much. ADVERTISEMENT Some pretty smart people disagree. Last November, Joan Didion published an essay in The New York Review of Books that explored the relationship between President Bush and the "religious right," looking closely at the wildly successful apocalyptic "Left Behind" novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. (The series' climactic installment, "Glorious Appearing," went on sale last week.) For Didion, the series is more than just the action-packed tale of a determined band of Christian guerrilla warriors fighting against the forces of the Antichrist in the last days before the Second Coming. It may also be the key to unlocking the hidden agenda of the Bush administration. Didion thinks she hears language coming from the White House suggesting that the president believes he is God's chosen instrument in our time just as Rayford Steele, the hero of the "Left Behind" books, is destined to carry out God's will at the end of history.

US president George W.Bush announces plan for Iraq self-rule US President George W. Bush has sought to regain domestic support for his Iraq policies, outlining a five step process for the country's return to self-rule.
Under the plan, a transitional administration takes over on June 30 to prepare for January elections that will elect a national assembly.
That assembly will then draft a new constitution that will allow a permanent government to be chosen by the end of next year.
In his address, Mr Bush warned of difficult days ahead and said more troops would be sent if necessary.
But he vowed that the handover would take place on schedule and that the US-led coalition would not be defeated by insurgents blamed for the recent surge in violence.
Ahead of the speech, the United States and Britain presented a new draft resolution on Iraq to the UN Security Council, in a bid to gain global support for the plan
Australia has backed the draft resolution and Australia's foreign minister, Alexander Downer, says despite the continued unrest, Iraq is ready for the handover next month.
But Mr Downer says today's UN resolution doesn't mean a timetable can be set for the return of Australian troops.

HEADLINES: 18 OCTOBER 2003 Bush visit strengthens RP-US economic relations anew The important thing about the visit of US President George W. Bush is the strengthening of the strategic relationship of the Philippines with the United States and the attendant objective of global peace and development in the region, Malacañang said today. The visit of President Bush is a good sign that the Philippines and the United States are one in the fight against terrorism and poverty, Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said in his regular radio interview this morning. "The important thing is we are able to strengthen our economic partnership, security partnership and our long term friendship and mutuality," Bunye said as in answer to a question on the material benefits that will come with the visit of Bush. Bunye emphasized that the RP-US relationship is no longer that between colonizer and colonized. "We are at a new level of partnership where we are allies in the world," Bunye said.

Fifty-five years ago, the representatives of 12 nations gathered here in Washington to sign the North Atlantic Treaty, which established the most successful military alliance in history. Today, we proudly welcome Bulgaria Estonia Latvia Lithuania Romania Slovakia and Slovenia. We welcome them into the ranks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. When NATO was founded, the people of these seven nations were captives to an empire. They endured bitter tyranny, they struggled for independence, they earned their freedom through courage and perseverance. And today they stand with us as full and equal partners in this great alliance. It has been my honor to host the Prime Ministers of each new NATO member in the Oval Office. I want to thank them for their friendship; I want to thank them for their leadership. I look forward to working with them to make the world more peaceful and more free. Welcome to America.

    DID GEORGE W. KNOW?
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said that "he warned the United States of an attack 12 days before the September 11 atrocity". The Bush Administration knew that a terrorist attack was imminent. Twelve days before the 9-11 attacks, President Hosni Mubarak, had warned the US. Below is the text of the Associated Press report. Deafening Silence of the US Media. The story has been barely mentioned by major US newspapers. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution (8 December ) devotes two sentences to it. If the US government knew and failed to act, this raises serious issues. It also bears on our understanding and interpretation of the 9-11 events. Was it negligence or some form of "complicity" on the part of US officials? Was there a cover-up? If it was negligence, who then is responsible? Did George W. Bush know? George W. and President Mubarak are said to be friends. George W. talks regularly to President Mubarak. On the 6th of December, Mubarak received a telephone call from George W. Mubarak's revelations concerning 9-11 were published by a Lebanese newspaper on the 7th. Why did the Bush Administration fail to take precautionary measures? The least we could expect is an inquiry.
