    George Walker Bush Born: Birthplace:
New Haven, Conn. George Walker Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Conn., the first child of future president George H. W. Bush. In 1948, the family moved to Odessa, Tex., where the senior Bush went to work in the oil business. George W. grew up mainly in Midland, Tex., and Houston, and later attended two of his father's alma maters, Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and Yale. After graduating from Yale with a history degree in 1968, Bush joined the Texas Air National Guard, where he served as a part-time fighter pilot until 1973. After receiving an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975, he returned to Texas, where he established his own oil and gas business. In 1977 he met and married his wife, Laura Welch, a librarian. The couple has twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, born in 1981. Following his defeat, Bush returned to the oil business. In 1985, however, oil prices fell sharply, and Bush's company verged on collapse until it was acquired by a Dallas firm. Bush then headed to Washington to become a paid adviser to his father's successful 1988 presidential campaign. After the election, Bush returned to Texas and assembled a group of investors to buy the Texas Rangers.

Reform in Iran may be set back by US policies
By BBC News Online's Tarik Kafala Iran's inclusion in Washington's "axis of evil" has caused anger in Iran and consternation among several European governments. In the eyes of United States' officials, American-Iranian relations since the 1979 Iranian revolution and Iran's political and material backing for radical groups in the Middle East are plenty to justify its membership of the axis.
Iran aggressively pursues weapons [of mass destruction] and exports terror, while an unelected few repress the Iranian people's hopes from freedom
President Bush in his "axis of evil" address Less easy to establish is Washington's assertion that Iran is attempting to acquire weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, that might threaten the US and its allies. Iran has denied, and European officials are highly dubious about, the US declaration that Tehran exports global terror and has links to Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

5-17-04: News at Home Historians vs. George W. Bush
By Robert S. McElvaine
Mr. McElvaine teaches history at Millsaps College. He is the author of EVE'S SEED: BIOLOGY, THE SEXES AND THE COURSE OF HISTORY (McGraw-Hill). Although his approval ratings have slipped somewhat in recent weeks, President George W. Bush still enjoys the overall support of nearly half of the American people. He does not, however, fare nearly so well among professional historians. Why should the views of historians on the current president matter? best president since Reagan, while 38 said he is the worst since Reagan. Almost all of the historians who rate the Bush presidency a success are Reagan admirers. Indeed, no other president (leaving aside the presumably mostly tongue-in-cheek mentions of Clinton) was named by more than four of the historians who took a favorable view of the current presidency. “He is blatantly a puppet for corporate interests, who care only about their own greed and have no sense of civic responsibility or community service. He lies, constantly and often, seemingly without control, and he lied about his invasion into a sovereign country, again for corporate interests; many people have died and been maimed, and that has been lied about too. He grandstands and mugs in a shameful manner, befitting a snake oil salesman, not a statesman. He does not think, process, or speak well, and is emotionally immature due to, among other things, his lack of recovery from substance abuse. The term is "dry drunk". He is an abject embarrassment/pariah overseas; the rest of the world hates him . . . . . He is, by far, the most irresponsible, unethical, inexcusable occupant of our formerly highest office in the land that there has ever been.”

George Bush's resume by Kelly Kramer
August 21st, 2003 Welcome CNN viewers. In case the obviously different visual style and different domain don't give it away, this site is in no way affliated with recallbush.com. Furthermore, I didn't write the resume. I simply posted it. I strongly encourage you to read other articles on my weblog before jumping to conclusions about me or my political beliefs. For those who tend to take things too literally, this resume is clearly satire. It is trying to make a point by highlighting salient points of George Bush's career. If you're looking for a petition to recall Bush, you've come to the wrong place. You're also barking up the wrong tree. As far as I know, the constitution has no provisions for recalling the president. If you insist, visit this site June 15th, 2003 This page is now highly ranked by Google and I've been getting quite a bit of mail on the topic. I'm taking the unusual step of modifying previously published content because the google link means that people are unlikely to read other parts of my weblog first. I'd like to make something very clear: I did not write this resume. As I clearly state below and in the title of this page, it was written by Kelly Kramer. I found her email address on the web and asked her for permission to repoost. She was kind enough to grant me permission.

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, under pressure to say which foreign leaders were rooting for him to beat President Bush, refused on Sunday to reveal any names. "No leader would obviously share a conversation if I started listing them," Kerry told reporters after Secretary of State Colin Powell suggested he name some names or stop implying foreign leaders were encouraging him to beat Bush. Kerry, who visited the battleground state of Pennsylvania to slam Bush's health care policy and hold a town hall meeting, said last week he had met foreign leaders who told him "you've got to beat this guy" because of unhappiness over U.S. foreign policy. He was challenged on the issue by Powell, who said on "Fox News Sunday" that "if he feels it is that important an assertion to make, he ought to list some names. If he can't list names, then perhaps he should find something else to talk about." Cedrick Brown, owner of a small business in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, also pressed Kerry on the issue during a town hall meeting and questioned whether he had met any foreign leaders recently.

Financier Contributes $5 Million More in Effort to Oust President By Laura Blumenfeld
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 11, 2003; Page A03 NEW YORK George Soros, one of the world's richest men, has given away nearly $5 billion to promote democracy in the former Soviet bloc, Africa and Asia. Now he has a new project: defeating President Bush. "It is the central focus of my life," Soros said, his blue eyes settled on an unseen target. The 2004 presidential race, he said in an interview, is "a matter of life and death." Soros, who has financed efforts to promote open societies in more than 50 countries around the world, is bringing the fight home, he said. On Monday, he and a partner committed up to $5 million to MoveOn.org, a liberal activist group, bringing to $15.5 million the total of his personal contributions to oust Bush. Overnight, Soros, 74, has become the major financial player of the left. He has elicited cries of foul play from the right. And with a tight nod, he pledged: "If necessary, I would give more money."

on politics and society from The Atlantic Monthly. Close-Up: The Mind of George W. Bush by Richard Brookhiser he powers of the presidency have changed almost beyond recognition since the infancy of the office, when foreign relations were handled by a dozen clerks and diplomats, the armed forces consisted of several thousand soldiers and sailors, and the President himself took months-long summer vacations from the yellow-fever-ravaged capital of Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. Don Quixote resident George W. Bush came to office with a particular package of traits and experiences. His two most obvious personal traits are humor and seriousness. Bush's humor was most in evidence during his campaign and in his early days in the White House. It was not universally admired: Bush has no ability to bathe a crowd in a delighted glow, as Ronald Reagan could. Yet almost all who deal with him, from loyal associates to unsympathetic reporters, testify that one-on-one he is a funny man. Evidently you have to be there. When Bush, speaking to the journalist Tucker Carlson, jeered at the condemned murderer Karla Faye Tucker's plea for clemency (Carlson's description: "'Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, 'don't kill me'"), you didn't want to be there. Journeys With George they didn't get the next President in a home movie).
