Send it to Blog@GeorgeWBush.com Official Campaign Blog Home June 7, 2004 Campaign Manager Ken Mehlman on Ronald Reagan's Legacy My admiration for Ronald Reagan is the reason I became involved in politics. In 1980, when I was 14, I volunteered on his campaign, going door to door to deliver literature. From that campaign forward, I've always considered myself a proud Reaganite, and a proud political activist. I am a Reaganite because President Reagan showed the world that freedom works. When Ronald Reagan was elected, our economy was in shambles. Inflation, interest rates and unemployment were in double digits. American workers and innovators were stifled by marginal tax rates as high as 70%. Americans had to wait in early morning gas lines for fuel to go to work. We faced problems on the world stage as well. The Soviet Union was on the march all over the world, fomenting communist revolutions in Angola, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and invading Afghanistan. Many Americans became convinced that these challenges were insurmountable, that the American century was coming to an end.

This peaceful transfer of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath, we affirm old traditions, and make new beginnings. As I begin, I thank President Clinton for his service to our nation. And I thank Vice President Gore for a contest conducted with spirit, and ended with grace. I am honored and humbled to stand here, where so many of America's leaders have come before me, and so many will follow. We have a place, all of us, in a long story; a story we continue, but whose end we will not see. It is the story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old. The story of a slave-holding society that became a servant of freedom. The story of a power that went into the world to protect but not possess, to defend but not to conquer. It is the American story; a story of flawed and fallible people, united across the generations by grand and enduring ideals. The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding American promise: that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance, that no insignificant person was ever born. Americans are called to enact this promise in our lives and in our laws. And though our nation has sometimes halted, and sometimes delayed, we must follow no other course.

On the 60th anniversary of D-Day this weekend, John Kerry spoke in Toledo, OH to Bedford High School graduates about the heroic role Americans their age played on the beaches of Normandy: “Sixty years ago today, an earlier generation faced down darkness and lit their way with a courage that saved freedom in the world.” Kerry challenged the students to find the greatness in their own generation through a commitment to service.

Writings Looking Forward A World Transformed Heartbeat Consulting Editor Biography: Early Years George Herbert Walker Bush was raised in privilege in suburban Connecticut in a family that cared deeply about international issues. "People say I was a man of privilege and by that they mean money," Bush reflected. "But I was privileged in the question of values a mother and father who were determined to help their kids be good people." His mother, Dorothy Walker Bush, had a lifelong influence on him; he said she was still instructing him even when he was in the White House. His father, Prescott Bush, was a successful businessman who went on in later life to become a senator. Bush credited him with passing on his core values: "Tell the truth, be honest, work hard, try to see the other guy's point of view while sticking to your own principles. These were truisms, you might say, that my three brothers and my sister and I had inculcated into us growing up."

94. Character Above All: George Bush Essay
Essay provides a brief look at the circumstances and events that molded the president's character.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/character/essays/bush.html
GEORGE BUSH
Excerpted from an essay by Michael R. Beschloss More than any other leader portrayed in this book save Eisenhower, Bush based his three campaigns for the presidency less on issues and ideology than on his persona as a leader of experience and character. Born in Milton, Massachusetts, in 1924, Bush matured in Greenwich, Connecticut, a setting that gave him little inkling of the political culture in which he would spend his adulthood. The boy was surrounded mainly by Anglophile, moderate Repubicans, for whom politics was Good Government and the town meeting, who minimized partisan confrontation and overstatement. As Bush's mother, Dorothy, admonished, one did not brag about oneself.... Had Bush in 1948 stayed in Connecticut after his heroism in the Pacific War and graduation from Yale, he would have been well poised to succeed his father in politics . As senator from Connecticut, George Bush would have been temperamentally and ideologically in tune with his state and party. Instead, eager to hack out his own business career, the young man took his wife, Barbara, and son, George, to the oilfields of Texas. This meant that from the day he entered politics, he would have to submerge many of his views and instincts to please an electorate that was notably more conservative than he. Politics was easier for Ronald Reagan: for every minute of his political career, he had the luxury of being in natural harmony with his party. Not Bush. The first harbinger of this was in the spring of 1962, when Houston friends persuaded him to run for chairman of the Harris County Republican Party, whose slogan was "Conservatives Unite!" The local party was in imminent danger of takeover by the

President Bush Supports Continued Ban on Internet Taxation
George Bush promises to hold back on the implementation of Internet Taxation in the face of a projected of $5 trillion dollar budget surplus.
It's a breath of fresh air when elected officials honor their campaign platform promises. President George Bush promised to hold back on the implementation of taxation of the Internet and he's actually endeavoring to follow through with those commitments. The three-year ban on Internet Taxation, enactedby congress in 1998, was set to expire this October 21, 2001. But let's hope that President Bush's pledge of a permanent ban on Internet taxation becomes a reality. For now, Senate Commerce Committee members are working on an immediate five-year extension of the federal prohibition of Internet taxes. Proponents of Internet taxation believe that the government shouldn't intervene in this matter at all.

    George Walker Bush Born: Birthplace:
New Haven, Conn. George Walker Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Conn., the first child of future president George H. W. Bush. In 1948, the family moved to Odessa, Tex., where the senior Bush went to work in the oil business. George W. grew up mainly in Midland, Tex., and Houston, and later attended two of his father's alma maters, Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and Yale. After graduating from Yale with a history degree in 1968, Bush joined the Texas Air National Guard, where he served as a part-time fighter pilot until 1973. After receiving an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975, he returned to Texas, where he established his own oil and gas business. In 1977 he met and married his wife, Laura Welch, a librarian. The couple has twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, born in 1981. Following his defeat, Bush returned to the oil business. In 1985, however, oil prices fell sharply, and Bush's company verged on collapse until it was acquired by a Dallas firm. Bush then headed to Washington to become a paid adviser to his father's successful 1988 presidential campaign. After the election, Bush returned to Texas and assembled a group of investors to buy the Texas Rangers.
