Bush should hold more press conferences, to provide us with ever more windows into the mind of one of the most dangerous men ever to occupy the White House. Why is he dangerous? He is willfully ignorant of what is going on in Iraq but cocksure that not only is he doing the right thing, but that God is blessing and directing his every decision, even to the point that he imagines himself to be infallible (or, rather, if he is not infallible, he cannot generate any evidence of fallibility when asked). Why is he one of the most dangerous? Because he autocratically heads the most powerful and well-armed state in the history of the world. He not only has his finger on the button. He has access to many thousands of weapons of mass destruction, and has shown himself to be willing to use them against anyone he regards as a foe. By comparison to his predecessor in the White House, Bush is alarming, the kind of president who seems capable of blowing up the world and calling it good. Let them live out their fantasies of death and dominion with toys rather than the real world.

US president George W.Bush announces plan for Iraq self-rule US President George W. Bush has sought to regain domestic support for his Iraq policies, outlining a five step process for the country's return to self-rule.
Under the plan, a transitional administration takes over on June 30 to prepare for January elections that will elect a national assembly.
That assembly will then draft a new constitution that will allow a permanent government to be chosen by the end of next year.
In his address, Mr Bush warned of difficult days ahead and said more troops would be sent if necessary.
But he vowed that the handover would take place on schedule and that the US-led coalition would not be defeated by insurgents blamed for the recent surge in violence.
Ahead of the speech, the United States and Britain presented a new draft resolution on Iraq to the UN Security Council, in a bid to gain global support for the plan
Australia has backed the draft resolution and Australia's foreign minister, Alexander Downer, says despite the continued unrest, Iraq is ready for the handover next month.
But Mr Downer says today's UN resolution doesn't mean a timetable can be set for the return of Australian troops.

Thailand: Bush Should Press Thaksin on Extrajudicial Executions, Burma

HRW Press Release, June 9, 2003 Thailand's crackdown: Drug 'war' kills democracy, too
HRW Commentary, April 24, 2003 June 9, 2003
The Honorable George Bush
President
United States of America
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear President Bush: I write to you about your June 10 meeting with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand. Human Rights Watch urges you to raise two important issues with Mr. Thaksin: the recent wave of extrajudicial killings in Thailand during the Thai government's "war on drugs," and the need for Thailand and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to put pressure on the military government in Burma to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other political detainees and begin a genuine process of political reform. Thailand's status as one of the leading rights-respecting democracies in Southeast Asia has been called into question by its violent "war on drugs." In response to a spiraling problem of drug use and drug trafficking, Thai police have conducted an anti-drug campaign in recent months in which more than 2,000 persons have died in apparent extrajudicial killings and more than 50,000 have been arrested, many arbitrarily. Somchai Homlaor, secretary-general of Forum Asia, the highly respected Bangkok-based human rights group, says, "In many provinces, there are death squads roaming around killing drug dealers. The rule of law and democracy could disappear overnight." Pradit Chareonthaitawee, the head of Thailand's official human rights commission, says that, "People are living in fear all over the kingdom" (Mr. Pradit received death threats after making this statement).

HEADLINES: 18 OCTOBER 2003 Bush visit strengthens RP-US economic relations anew The important thing about the visit of US President George W. Bush is the strengthening of the strategic relationship of the Philippines with the United States and the attendant objective of global peace and development in the region, Malacañang said today. The visit of President Bush is a good sign that the Philippines and the United States are one in the fight against terrorism and poverty, Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said in his regular radio interview this morning. "The important thing is we are able to strengthen our economic partnership, security partnership and our long term friendship and mutuality," Bunye said as in answer to a question on the material benefits that will come with the visit of Bush. Bunye emphasized that the RP-US relationship is no longer that between colonizer and colonized. "We are at a new level of partnership where we are allies in the world," Bunye said.

Fifty-five years ago, the representatives of 12 nations gathered here in Washington to sign the North Atlantic Treaty, which established the most successful military alliance in history. Today, we proudly welcome Bulgaria Estonia Latvia Lithuania Romania Slovakia and Slovenia. We welcome them into the ranks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. When NATO was founded, the people of these seven nations were captives to an empire. They endured bitter tyranny, they struggled for independence, they earned their freedom through courage and perseverance. And today they stand with us as full and equal partners in this great alliance. It has been my honor to host the Prime Ministers of each new NATO member in the Oval Office. I want to thank them for their friendship; I want to thank them for their leadership. I look forward to working with them to make the world more peaceful and more free. Welcome to America.

Message from United States President George W. Bush I'm proud to join you in commemorating the 150th year of the important relationship between the United States and Japan. Today, America has no closer ally than Japan. The American people are proud to claim the friendship of the fine citizens of Japan. Our two nations are bound by common interest, common values and common goals. Our alliance brings peace, stability, and hope for a better future to our own citizens and to people across the Pacific and around the world. Every year, our two economies produce more than 40% of the world's wealth. Together we lead the world in the scientific and technological advancement that defines our age. In 1854, representatives from our two countries negotiated the Treaty of Peace and Amity. Six years later, Japan sent its first official mission to San Francisco with 80 dignitaries eager to learn about America and to expand the contact between our two people. Today, millions of Japanese travel to the United States each year. Japanese culture, from food to film, enriches Americans' lives, and Ichiro is winning the hearts of young American baseball fans from coast to coast. The friendship between our people benefits the world. Japanese and American scientists collaborate to fight HIV/AIDS, and to develop new technologies to clean the world's environment. Our governments work together to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, to bring peace to strife-torn lands, and to defeat the terrorists that threaten our common values. Our men and women in uniform serve alongside each other to maintain peace and stability in Asia. And at this hour, Japanese and American forces are helping the Iraqi people build a better future.

President George W. Bush
George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States. He was sworn into office January 20, 2001, after a campaign in which he outlined sweeping proposals to reform America's public schools, transform our national defense, provide tax relief, modernize Social Security and Medicare, and encourage faith-based and community organizations to work with government to help Americans in need. President Bush served for six years as the 46th Governor of the State of Texas, where he earned a reputation as a compassionate conservative who shaped public policy based on the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, strong families, and local control. President Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, and he grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas. He received a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1968, then served as an F-102 fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. President Bush received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1975. After graduating, he moved back to Midland and began a career in the energy business. After working on his father's successful 1988 presidential campaign, he assembled the group of partners that purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise in 1989. He served as managing general partner of the Texas Rangers until he was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. He became the first Governor in Texas history to be elected to consecutive four-year terms when he was re-elected on November 3, 1998, with 68.6 percent of the vote.
