President George W Bush said on Monday that the United States wants Osama Bin Laden, the prime suspect in last Tuesday's terror attacks, "dead or alive".
It is becoming clear with each passing hour, with each passing day that it is the al-Qaeda network that is the prime suspect... all roads lead to the leader of that organisation, Osama bin Laden
Colin Powell Speaking after a meeting at the Pentagon with Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to discuss the mobilisation of US reserves Mr Bush also warned Afghanistan's ruling Taleban they will be held accountable for helping Bin Laden. "We are going to hold the people who house them accountable and the people who think they can provide them with safe havens... and the Taleban must take my statement seriously," he said. As the investigation into the attacks proceeds US Attorney General John Ashcroft warned that US law enforcement agencies believe that associates of the hijackers may pose a continuing threat.

The Misunderestimated Man

How Bush chose stupidity.
By Jacob Weisberg
Posted Friday, May 7, 2004, at 6:54 AM PT
Was he born that way? Adapted from the introduction to The Deluxe Election-Edition Bushisms The question I am most frequently asked about Bushisms is, "Do you really think the president of the United States is dumb?" The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes and no. Quotations collected over the years in Slate may leave the impression that George W. Bush is a dimwit. Let's face it: A man who cannot talk about education without making a humiliating grammatical mistake ("The illiteracy level of our children are appalling"); who cannot keep straight the three branches of government ("It's the executive branch's job to interpret law"); who coins ridiculous words ("Hispanos," "arbolist," "subliminable," "resignate," "transformationed"); who habitually says the opposite of what he intends ("the death tax is good for people from all walks of life!") sounds like a grade-A imbecile. And if you don't care to pursue the matter any further, that view will suffice. George W. Bush has governed, for the most part, the way any airhead might, undermining the fiscal condition of the nation, squandering the goodwill of the world after Sept. 11, and allowing huge problems (global warming, entitlement spending, AIDS) to metastasize toward catastrophe through a combination of ideology, incomprehension, and indifference. If Bush isn't exactly the moron he sounds, his synaptic misfirings offer a plausible proxy for the idiocy of his presidency.

Early Career. Born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Conn., he spent most of his childhood first in Midland and then in Houston, Tex. He earned his undergraduate degree from Yale, the same university his father had attended, and fulfilled his military service requirement with the Texas Air National Guard (1968-73). After earning a master’s degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School, he returned to Midland in 1975, hoping, like his father, to make his fortune in the oil industry. In 1977 he married a schoolteacher and librarian, Laura Welch (1946- ). He lost a bid for the U.S. House of Representatives the following year. Bush's rapid financial and political ascent did not begin until 1986, when he turned 40, swore off alcohol, and renewed his Christian faith. A business deal with Harken Oil and Gas, a Dallas-based firm, offered him the financial stake he needed, and after assisting in his father’s 1988 presidential campaign, he became managing partner of the Texas Rangers professional baseball team in 1989. He was elected governor of Texas in 1994, unseating a popular Democrat incumbent, and won a landslide reelection victory in 1998, the same year his brother Jeb Bush (1953- ) was elected governor of Florida.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has reaffirmed his pledge of solidarity and support for the United States after talks with President George W Bush. Mr Blair said the struggle against the type of terrorism responsible for the attacks on New York and Washington concerned "the whole of the democratic and civilised and free world".
I give on behalf of our country, our solidarity, sympathy and our support
Tony Blair The prime minister spoke to reporters ahead of President Bush's historic address to both houses of Congress in which he vowed to bring justice to those responsible for the attacks. Mr Blair said Britain would support a fight against international terrorism for "as long as it takes". "What happened on 11 September was of course a brutal and horrific attack on America, but it was a demonstration of what these people are capable of in any part of the world," he said.

George Bush Jr: Palestinian Reform and Palestinian State
June 24, 2002 home news peacewatch top stories ... donations Introduction In this controversial and historic speech, delivered following repeated Palestinian terror attacks and while Israel had reoccupied all of the West Bank in retaliation, US President George Bush called for establishment of a Palestinian state following democratic reform. The speech was delayed several times and changed because of several Palestinian terror attacks and widespread Israeli reprisals. In a sense, it was the first comprehensive speech by President Bush regarding policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, despite the April 4 speech announcing the mission of Colin Powell to the Middle East , and may have been about a year over due. The speech called for establishment of a Palestinian state, but set reform and democracy and abandonment of terror as conditions for establishment of the state: It is untenable for Israeli citizens to live in terror. It is untenable for Palestinians to live in squalor and occupation. And the current situation offers no prospect that life will improve. Israeli citizens will continue to be victimized by terrorists, and so Israel will continue to defend herself. In the situation the Palestinian people will grow more and more miserable. My vision is two states, living side by side in peace and security. There is simply no way to achieve that peace until all parties fight terror. Yet, at this critical moment, if all parties will break with the past and set out on a new path, we can overcome the darkness with the light of hope. Peace requires a new and different Palestinian leadership, so that a Palestinian state can be born.

Former American President George Bush Senior has warned that America's war against terrorism is likely to be a long, drawn-out conflict. In an interview for the Breakfast With Frost programme - to be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday morning - Mr Bush Senior said the current crisis was very different to the Gulf War in which he headed the international coalition to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
It's not going to be a 100-hour ground war, or a very effective TV air war
George Bush Senior The ex-president echoed the US Government's prediction that - unlike Desert Storm - the present campaign was unlikely to mirror the quick, clean kill that Washington and its allies scored in 1991. "It's not going to be a 100-hour ground war, or a very effective TV air war - it's going to be a different kind of a battle to win, but there's a determination, amongst world leaders, that we will win," he said.

President George Bush and the Gilded Age
Yoshi Tsurumi (Professor of International Business, Baruch College, the City University of New York ) Something really strange has happened to the U.S. under the Bush Administration. With her ever bulging budget deficits and foreign debts, America's skewed income distribution is rapidly making the U.S. resemble Argentina or Mexico. The "Jobless Recovery" is not a political mirage, but a serious problem. America's GDP is increasing at an annual rate of about 4.0% this year. But, only those Wall Street "money gamers" and self-dealing "management aristocrats" of Corporate America are dizzy with their huge bonuses, padded salaries, and self-dealt stock options. The remaining hard working Americans cannot eat "GDP." The U.S. has widening income gap between a few "haves" and many "have-nots." During the last economic recovery period of March 1991 to April 1993, a 10% increase in GDP increased manufacturing jobs and service jobs 3% and 5.9% respectively. However, for the present economic recovery since November 2001, a 10% increase in GDP is increasing manufacturing and service jobs only 0.7% and 0.9% respectively. Just to keep up with her population growth, the U.S. needs to create about 230,000 jobs a month. If the U.S. wants to employ the 3 million unemployed workers thrown out of work under the Bush Administration, the U.S. would have to create a lot more jobs monthly. Last month, however, the U.S. only created 115,000 jobs. President Bush has now abandoned his earlier declared promise of "creating 2.6 million jobs by the fall of 2004."
