Residency Training in General Surgery BURNS: Goals and Objectives GOALS The resident will be exposed to all aspects of burn care, including initial care in the Emergency Department, ongoing treatment in the Burn Unit, definitive care in the Operating Room and follow-up care in the outpatient setting. OBJECTIVES I. Emergency Department Experience While caring for burn patients in the Emergency Department the resident will: Learn the elements of the history/physical exam that require emphasis on assessing the burn patient. Learn to assess the severity (depth) and extent (TBSA) of a burn, as well as burn patterns including those of potential abuse. Be able to determine which burn patients require aggressive resuscitation, and how to provide that resuscitation, and all initial care of the burn patient. Appreciate how important it is to provide accurate information to the patient, and the patient's family in a clear, concise, and professional manner. II. Burn Unit Experience Participating in patient care in the burn unit will allow the resident to: Provide on-going resuscitation and burn critical care to patients that require it.

Language English. Repository Biographical Note William Wallace Burns (1825-1892) was born at Coshocton, Ohio3 September 1825. At age17 he was appointed to the United States Military Academy from which he graduated in 1847. He was posted to the United States Army Infantry and served during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) on recruiting duty, then spent several years at various Indian posts in theWest and Southwest. In 1858, he accepted a staff commission as Commissary of Subsistence with the rank of Captain. Remaining with the U. S. Army, Burns served with the Army of the Potomac in the first months of the Civil War as General George B. McClellan's Chief Commissary in the West Virginia Campaign. Burns was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers 28 September 1861 and, beginning the following Spring in the Peninsular Campaign (Mar.-Aug. 1862), commanded a Brigade of General John Sedwick's 2nd Divison, 2nd Corps, during which Burns was wounded and favorably mentioned by McClellan. What to do if You are in an Automobile Accident Would you know what to do if you drove your car into another car? A pedestrian? When a car accident happens, injuries may be severe and emotions may be high. However, there are important things that must be taken care of both at the scene of any accident and following an accident. The following is a list of things that should be done, if at all possible, when any accident occurs. The cardinal rule for all car accidents is that you should never leave the scene without stopping. If you leave the scene of an accident, particularly where someone has sustained injuries or was killed, you can face serious criminal penalties for being a "hit-and-run" driver. Exception: If you are hit by another car in a deserted area, use caution in stopping and getting out of your vehicle. Unfortunately, there have been reported incidents where a person exited their vehicle in a deserted or unsafe area after being bumped by another car only to be robbed or killed. Instead of getting out of the car if you find yourself in that situation, drive to the nearest police station to report the accident. If it turns out that you were being over-cautious and the other driver had no ill intentions, you may be embarrassed, but you will also be safe. If you are in a safe area, move your car out of the flow of traffic, if possible, to the shoulder. Take care in exiting your car. Watch for traffic, other people, and broken glass or car parts.

I've heard a lot of concern about proposed changes in our accident policy. The proposed new accident policy limits discipline for accidents to those instances when operators have violated a vehicle code or serious safety rule - like running a red light. In the vast majority of accidents, whether avoidable or unavoidable, operators would receive no discipline at all . If the situation warranted, they would be retrained, but would receive run pay while in training. For accidents involving a traffic violation, the operator would likely be disciplined, although that discipline would be subject to all the appeals granted in the regular disciplinary process. I have also received questions about the effect of the proposed changes in the disciplinary process. Most people think heat is the only cause of burns, but some chemicals and electrical current can burn as well. Although the skin is usually the part of the body that's burned, the tissues under it also can be burned, and internal organs can be burned even when the skin is not. For example, drinking a very hot liquid or caustic substance such as acid can burn the esophagus and stomach. Inhaling smoke and hot air from a fire in a burning building can burn the lungs. Tissues that are burned may die. When tissues are damaged by a burn, fluid leaks from blood vessels, causing swelling. In an extensive burn, loss of a large amount of fluid from abnormally leaky blood vessels can cause shock. In shock, blood pressure decreases so much that too little blood flows to the brain and other vital organs. Chemical burns can be caused by various irritants and poisons, including strong acids and alkalis, phenols and cresols (organic solvents), mustard gas, and phosphorus. Chemical burns can cause tissue death that can slowly spread for hours after the burn.
