145. Adoniram Judson Biography
A detailed look at how the love of Christ shaped Judson's entire life.
http://www.reformedreader.org/rbb/judson/ajbio.htm
Adoniram Judson Apostle of the Love of Christ in Burma
by Eugene Myers Harrison THERE IT WAS the site of the historic Let-ma-yoon prison, famous for its heathen horrors and its Christian conquests. Soon after commencing my missionary service in Burma, I went to Mandalay, then through the dense jungle growth to the memorial slab marking the site where Adoniram and Ann Judson, America's first missionaries, endured such incredible sufferings as ambassadors of Christ. As I stood there I recalled the confident prediction Judson made in 1816, in his first tract for the Burmese people: "About one hundred or at most two hundred years hence the religion of Buddha, of Brahma, of Mohammed and of Rome, with all other false religions, will disappear and the religion of Christ will pervade the whole world." Why is it, as we hasten toward the termination of the two hundred years of which Judson spoke, that the unsaved multitudes of earth are greater by at least one thousand million than they were when Judson made his prediction? In a day when the cause of world evangelism is so sadly languishing, it will be a humbling and inspiring experience for the Christians of America to turn aside and expose their souls afresh to the story of one who was magnificently captivated by the love of Christ. The love of Christ was his hope, his incentive, and his consolation. The love of Christ sang and sobbed and shouted its way through all the changing scenes, manifold trials and monumental accomplishments of the five great epochs of his life.

India-Burma The U.S. Army Campaigns
of World War II

Introduction
World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. However, the half century that now separates us from that conflict has exacted its toll on our collective knowledge. While World War II continues to absorb the interest of military scholars and historians, as well as its veterans, a generation of Americans has grown to maturity largely unaware of the political, social, and military implications of a war that, more than any other, united us as a people with a common purpose. Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not only about the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combined operations in the coalition war against fascism. During the next several years, the U.S. Army will participate in the nation's 50th anniversary commemoration of World War II. The commemoration will include the publication of various materials to help educate Americans about that war. The works produced will provide great opportunities to learn about and renew pride in an Army that fought so magnificently in what has been called "the mighty endeavor." World War II was waged on land, on sea, and in the air over several diverse theaters of operation for approximately six years. The following essay is one of a series of campaign studies highlighting those struggles that, with their accompanying suggestions for further reading, are designed to introduce you to one of the Army's significant military feats from that war.

The Burmese government is considered by numerous world and religious leaders to be one of the planet's most repressive regimes. The people of Burma are subject to brutal human rights violations, including murder, torture, rape, political imprisonment and forced labor. The environment in Burma is suffering as well, with vast amounts of rainforest being cut down for wood, natural gas and minerals being exploited, and the habitats of endangered species being destroyed. The Burmese military government is also widely reported to be involved in the international drug trade, responsible for 60% of the heroin that comes into the United States, according to one US Department of State report.
Our sources include the U.S. government, the United Nations, independent human rights groups, and democracy supporters inside Burma, including the elected leader of the National League of Democracy and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi. We bring you highlights and essential details about Burma that the military rulers of Burma don't want you to know.

ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT
      by
" Torture seems out of place in a country so imbued with the Buddha's compassionate teachings ." - Joel Swerdlow National Geographic I came to South-East Asia in 1990 but I did not travel to Burma, yes B-U-R-M-A, until a couple of months ago. I think I was scared I would have a good time, and my bleeding heart liberal consciousness couldn't justify that given the atrocities perpetuated by the heinous Burmese junta. Guess what? I was right. I did have a good time, I loved the country and I still don't like SLORC. I set off on my journey with two fellow Canadians. Brad, an early fortiesh postie from Toronto who I had met backpacking through Costa Rica many years ago; and Wally a spry seventy-six year old retired Canadian Pacific Railway employee whom I had met on Khao San Road a number of years back. We were told that we were going to have to cash US$300 on arrival into the equivalent of Burmese FEC's. But a friend of mine, John Hall, had been able to bluff his way past Burmese Customs Officials on his last trip and didn't have to change his money. So eager with anticipation we launched into our bluff. But we were all denied and sent to the currency counter. Sighing heavily Brad and I forked over $US300 each (we were able to get Wally in free under the `traveling with grandpa clause.') So much for our budget. Basically this meant that we had to take a domestic flight (I wanted to see P-A-G-A-N anyway) unless we wanted to buy a lot of lacquerwear.

Myanmar Since 1988 Myanmar has been under the military rule of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) - formerly known as Slorc - an abominable military junta. Prospective travellers should monitor events in Myanmar and weigh up the arguments in support of and opposition to travel. Dissent is suppressed, and political prisoners are jailed for expressing their opinions. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi advocates boycotting all forms of travel to the country as a means of isolating the government and forcing reform. Inside Myanmar, there are a number of people who support her stance. This pro-boycott group argues that much of the money from tourism goes directly and indirectly into the pockets of the very generals who continue to deny Burmese citizens the most-basic civil rights. However, others involved with Burmese politics, including many current or former members of the NLD, feel that a travel boycott of Myanmar is counterproductive. They maintain that tourism is not only economically helpful, but vital to the pro-democracy movement for the two-way flow of information it provides.
