In December 1885, Burma was established as a province of the the British Indian Empire . Anti-British riots in the 1930s led to the passing o f the Government of India Act and in April 1937 Burma became a British crown colony with a certain amount of self-government. Burma was invaded by the Japanese 15th Army on 11th December 1941. The island was defended by only a few units of the British Army and a locally recruited 1st Burma Division and the 35,000 Japanese soldiers had little difficulty in making early gains. In March 1942, General

Geography and Cultures: Burma is a Southeast Asian country of approximately 45 million people in 8 major ethnic nationalities: ethnic Burmans account for roughly 60% of the population, with the Shan, the Karen, the Kachin, and the Karenni being the next most numerous. Burma's diverse, multicultural society boasts 106 languages and dialects. The peoples' spiritual faiths also reflect the underlying diversity of history and culture, including Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and varieties of animism. Burma is rich in natural resources, such as precious stones, tropical hardwoods, and onshore and offshore energy reserves. Modern History: From 1962 to 1988, General Ne Win and his cronies sealed Burma away from the international community. The peoples of Burma became pauperized by the junta's economic experiments and Burma's status as one of the wealthiest countries in Asia declined to one of the ten poorest in the world.

Burma and Beyond: The Luce Collection at the National Library of Australia
Article by Andrew Gosling published in National Library of Australia News , 6 (13), October 1996, pp 3-5 Gordon Hannington Luce (1889-1979) is widely regarded as the foremost European scholar on Burma. His outstanding library containing books, manuscripts , maps and photographs was acquired by the National Library of Australia in 1980, as part of its effort to develop major research collections on Asia . The Luce Collection contains important source material not only about Burma, but on neighbouring areas of Southeast Asia, India and China. Luce was born in the English cathedral town of Gloucester, the twelfth child of a clergyman whose family came from Jersey in the Channel Islands. From an early age, Gordon showed an intense interest in history, languages and literature. At six he was reading Homer in Greek. He also became a fine gymnast. There is a story that aged about nine, when told at dinner that children should be seen and not heard he performed a hand-stand on the arms of his chair in silent protest. At Cambridge he read Classics and English Literature. His wide circle of friends included Rupert Brooke, Aldous Huxley, Maynard Keynes, E.M. Forster, the China scholar Arthur Waley and other notable figures of the Bloomsbury set. Keynes financed the publication of a volume of Luce's poems with illustrations by the artist Duncan Grant.

A brief history of the Mergui Archipelago
The port of Mergui as it’s name might suggest, is the principle township on Mergui Island, separated from the mainland by the Kyaukpya river, which flows into the Tenasserim River which in turn is flooded by Little Tenasserim river from Thailand.
During the seventeenth century this area was a crucial link in the Mediterranean Masulipatam maritime trading route. At Mergui, Siam’s major port in the Bay of Bengal, the continuing journey to the Gulf of Siam had two alternatives. Firstly, overland through perilous forest belt; a preferred route for the transportation of small, valuable merchandise. The other was an arduous sail around the Straits of Malacca, an undesirable option due to the on-going threat of piracy. At this time the East India Company controlled the area’s maritime trading; they too were plagued by bounty-seekers.
During the year of 1676 the infamous Samuel White settled in Mergui. A great interloper of his time, White soon gained control of Mergui and its surrounding province. With the backing of King Nari of Siam, White became the Shahbandar of Mergui (Governor), and also an Admiral of the Siamese Navy. Using his powers, he openly seized merchant vessels in the Bay of Bengal, and claimed them and their cargoes as his prize. Rendering himself nothing less than a pirate.

Geography of Burma
The Legend of the Sacred Cat of Burma
Many centuries ago by a sparkling lake, in a valley surrounded by majestic mountains, the temple of Lao-Tsun was guarded by 100 yellow-eyed white cats with long silken hair. The temple housed a beautiful golden goddess with sapphire blue eyes who watched over the transmutation of souls. The head monk, Mun-ha, whose beard had been braided with gold by the enlighten one, often knelt in meditation before the golden goddess,Tsun-Kyan-Kse. At his side was his faithful and beloved companion, a beautiful temple cat named Sinh. Sinh would always shared in his master's meditation. As the monk meditated, Sinh would gaze steadily at the golden goddess beautiful sapphire blue eyes. A veil of mystery surrounding this initial background of the Birmans. According to the explorer, Auguste Pavie who made a study of this subject stated the pointed cats of all colors, some mitted and some not, can be seen in todays temples.

New Internationalist Issue 280
A History of Burma
1. Four million pagodas
The nation we know as Burma was first formed during the golden age of Pagan in the eleventh century. King Anawrahta ascended the throne in 1044, uniting Burma under his monarchy. His belief in Buddhism led him to begin building the temples and pagodas for which the city of Pagan is renowned. Pagan became the first capital of a Burmese kingdom that included virtually all of modern Burma. The golden age of Pagan reached its peak during the reign of Anawratha's successor, Kyanzitta (1084-1113), another devout Buddhist, under whom it acquired the name 'City of Four Million Pagodas'.
However, the megalomaniac temple-building activities of some later kings, combined with the enrichment of monasteries, were to impoverish the country and Burma became increasingly vulnerable to Mongol and Tartar incursions. But to this day Buddhism has remained at the heart of Burmese culture and 80 per cent of the population are followers.

The License Plate History of Burma/Myanmar - Pure Pulp
by: Leonard Heller (c) Leonard Heller License Plate History of Burma/Myanmar
by Leonard Heller
http://www.whidbey.net/licenseplate/Burma.html
I have had a long correspondence with a man in Rangoon, Burma. This page is based on that correspondence and the excellent book "Registration Plates of the World, Third Edition".
The first thing to clear up is the proper name of the country. Myanmar is Burma in the Burmese language. Myanmar is to Burma what Deutschland is to Germany or Côte d’Ivoire is to Ivory Coast. In 1989 Burma changed its country name to Myanmar on its stamps and much was made of this fact but I’ve noticed that whenever my correspondents refer to their country it is always referred to as Burma.
The history of license plates in Burma fall naturally into three periods. Nobody is sure when license plates began to be used in Burma but by the mid-1930’s they were in use. The first period is from around 1930 to 1953. During most of this period the British ruled Burma and plates were in western characters. This continued during the early years of independence. It was not until 1953 that plates in Burmese characters were required. The second period lasted until 1996. The third period began in 1996. A fourth period could be added. From 1941 to 1944 Burma was occupied by the Japanese. It is not known what types of plates were in use during this period. This period is outside the scope of this page.

Soldiers from three different battalions descended on the ethnic Karen village on May 7 and gave the residents an ultimatum: Leave or be shot. Then the soldiers, eyewitnesses say, slaughtered the villagers' livestock and burned their 27 houses and 30 rice barns. The villagers got away with their lives, but not much else.
