In December 1941 it began, for the British, with disaster, retreat and irreversible loss of face in front of the subject population. It ended, in August 1945, in triumph with the total defeat of the occupying Japanese army. Why was the campaign fought? Allied aims were to keep open an overland supply route to the Chinese, thus pinning down a large Japanese army, and to re-conquer a part of the British Empire. However by the time the Burma road had been reopened and extended the war was nearly over and aircraft had taken over, carrying more supplies over the "Hump" than could be carried by land. Furthermore, once reconquered, Burma soon became independent and within three years had left the British Commonwealth, being the first country to do so.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The History of Burma Myanmar Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia, formerly known as Burma . The name of the country was changed in 1989, and this change of name has been officially recognized by the United Nations. However, some states, such as the United States, do not recognize this change of name, since they do not recognize the military government which instituted it. Today, many people use Myanmar, which is a derivative of the Burmese short-form name Myanma Naingngandaw, regardless of their opinion of the military government.

They live in an area around the southern Thailand-Burmese border, historic lower Burma. There are believed to be around 800,000 people who claim Mon ancestry and retain their culture and language but the majority of the Mon, possibly 4 million, are absorbed into the Burman. The majority of Mon live around the city of Bagan or the site of their historic capital, the port of Mawlamyine.

Very briefly, what's the modern history there?
Burma was colonized by the British in 1886 and became independent in 1948. There was a brief period of parliamentary democracy when U Nu served as Prime Minister until 1962 when he was deposed in a military coup by General Ne Win. Apparently Ne Win didn't know what to do next. He's not an economist, not a scientist, not even a politician. He's a general. Since the coup, Burma has been a repressed country cut off from the rest of the world. Ne Win began a policy of extreme isolationism, non-alignment and neutrality. He rejected investments by Western and other foreign governments, nationalized industry, banks, the import/export trade, and retail business. To retain power through such tragic failure he used the skills he had as a general: fear, disappearances, murders, arrests, and torture. He is believed still to wield power.

Teeth and bits of jaw from a tiny, squirrel-sized animal that lived 40 million years ago in what is now Myanmar (Burma) suggest primates originated in Asia, not Africa as was believed, researchers said. A team of researchers from France, Japan, and Myanmar say the little animal, which they have named Bahinia pondaungensis, was probably the ancestor of modern apes, monkeys and humans. Jean-Jacques Jaeger of the Universite Montpellier-II in France and colleagues found the fossils in a layer of red clay, along with a complete lower jaw from a more advanced primate called Amphipithecus. Writing in the journal Science, they say their findings may help decide where the earliest anthropoids the advanced primates that include humans, monkeys and apes came from.
Origin of Mankind?
The Bahinia find is important because it tells us that there was a complex community of primates living in Asia, a tremendous anthropoid radiation much earlier than anyone thought. We didn't have that kind of information about Asia before, only Africa. Now we may have to change our whole story about anthropoid origins and evolution.'' said the researchers.

History of the Mon People of Burma
The Mon are the earliest known inhabitants of lower Burma. They founded an empire, and introduced both writing and Buddhism into Burma. In the year 573, two Mon brothers, Prince Samala and Prince Wimala, founded the Mon kingdom Hongsavatoi at the present site of modern Pegu. This kingdom flourished in peace and prosperity for several centuries until it was occupied by the Burman dynasty. In 1757, the Burma ruler U Aungzeya invaded and devastated the Mon kingdom, killing tens of thousands of Mon, including learned Mon priests, pregnant women, and children. Over 3,000 priests were massacred by the victorious Burmans in the capital city alone. Thousands more priests were killed in the countryside. The surviving priests fled to Thailand, and Burman priests took over the monasteries. Most of the Mon literature, written on palm leaves, was destroyed by the Burmans. Use of the Mon language was forbidden, and Burman became the medium of instruction.

The official name of the country is the Union of Myanmar (Myanmar from the Burmese word for the martial attributes of strong and fast ). It used to be the Union of Burma and even now most people outside of the country call it Burma but in actuality it is the Burman Empire, basically as it existed in the late nineteenth century when the British conquered it. That encounter was a matter of local imperialists (Burmans) clashing with a global imperialists (the British). But the area which encompasses what later was designated Burma was more of a cockpit in which various ethnic groups vyed for control. The Burmans were in control at the time of the British conquest but there were times in history when other groups such as the Mons or the Tai people of the Shan State were dominant. Bogyoke (Major General) Aung San in 1946 Upon independence in 1948 there was the awkward problem of the non-Burman sections of the country. Aung San formulated a reasonable approach to the problem. He promised that if the peoples of the non-Burman territories sho were seeking independent statehood joined with the core Burman territories in the Union of Burma they would in ten years have the option of seceding from that union. This promise was incorporated into the Constitution. To the great sorrow of the country Aung San was assassinated just before independence. U Nu who took Aung San's place as national leader after independence was an extraordinary individual and an able politician but he did not have the organization skills of Aung San.

HISTORY OF THE BURMA-BUCKNELL CONNECTION
The rich heritage of intercultural links between Burma and Bucknell began in 1846 when Eugenio Kincaid , Baptist missionary on leave from his post in Burma, became a charter trustee of the University at Lewisburg (renamed Bucknell University in 1886). When Kincaid returned to Moulmein, he encouraged Maung Shaw Loo , the university's first international student, to study in Lewisburg. Shaw Loo arrived in 1858 to study at the Academy, preparatory division for young men, and graduated from the university in 1864, thus beginning the long Burma-Bucknell connection which culminated in a series of international Weekends held from 1948 through 1965. During the Tenth Anniversary Burma-Bucknell Weekend , his Excellency U Win, Ambassador from the Union of Burma to the United States, presented a beautifully hand-crafted silver bowl from the President of the Union of Burma and Mrs. Win Maung, "symbolizing 100 years of friendly relationship between the people of Burma and Bucknell University." A number of voices, some through translators, have told and retold the Burma-Bucknell story. Whenever possible, the facts presented in the historical notes linked to this page have been verified. General Stilwell's party hikes from Burma to India. (National Archives)
Introduction
World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. However, the half century that now separates us from that conflict has exacted its toll on our collective knowledge. While World War II continues to absorb the interest of military scholars and historians, as well as its veterans, a generation of Americans has grown to maturity largely unaware of the political, social, and military implications of a war that, more than any other, united us as a people with a common purpose. Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not only about the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combined operations in the coalition war against fascism. During the next several years, the U.S. Army will participate in the nation's 50th anniversary commemoration of World War II. The commemoration will include the publication of various materials to help educate Americans about that war. The works produced will provide great opportunities to learn about and renew pride in an Army that fought so magnificently in what has been called "the mighty endeavor." World War II was waged on land, on sea, and in the air over several diverse theaters of operation for approximately six years. The following essay is one of a series of campaign studies highlighting those struggles that, with their accompanying suggestions for further reading, are designed to introduce you to one of the Army's significant military feats from that war.

Boycott Quarterly, Summer 1997
The Pepsi logos seen throughout Burma, whether on billboards or in the state-run press, should soon be disappearing, sending one message that Burma's dictatorship, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (or SLORC) cannot censor. The recent decision by PepsiCo to cut all ties to Burma by May 31, 1997, is a significant achievement for Burma's democracy movement. A major Western corporation has promised, after much resistance, to leave Burma until democracy is restored.
Although I hesitate to speak of victory (SLORC, after all, has still not respected the results of its own 1990 election), the success of the PepsiCo/Burma boycott is a testament to the potential power of consumers. It would be a mistake to overestimate the boycott's significance, but it would be as big of a mistake to miss it. The dynamics driving this boycott's success warrant careful study by democracy activists. As one closely involved with the boycott, I would like to attempt a brief history of the boycott.
The boycott was first called by the All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF), which was founded by refugees who had fled SLORC's student massacres in 1988. In the ABSDF's newsletter, DAWN News Bulletin, dated April, 1990, the group argued that, despite the company's disingenuous claims to the contrary, PepsiCo's entry into Burma was "a direct and obvious involvement in Burma's politics." PepsiCo's high profile presence would give the emerging SLORC much-needed money and legitimacy.

The History of Burma
The early history of Burma Burma's early history is practically uncharted but by the 8th century the Mons - who probably originated in Central Asia - occupied the lower portions of the Irrawaddy basin, while the Burmans had established themselves on the upper reaches of the Irrawaddy. Burma's subsequent violent history largely concerns the struggle between these 2 predominant racial groups. Kings fought wars in order to carry off slaves from the kingdoms they conquered; it was important to have a large labor force to build temples and pagodas and to grow rice.
The Glass Palace Chronicle of the Kings of Burma (a 19th century historical mythology) claims that the Burmese kings were descendants of the Buddha's family but historians have found no evidence of any ruler before the 1th century King Anawrahta of Pagan. From the 10th century on, the Burmans were the largest group; they were also the most important in terms of their historical, cultural and political contribution to Burma's heritage. Between the I7th and 19th centuries, the Burmans succeeded in uniting the country under one monarch on 3 separate occasions. When each of these empires fragmented, Burma became a muddle of quarrelling races. In the 19th century, the Burmese frequently clashed with the British and were defeated in 1885, resulting in the capture and exile of the last king. Early history

Burma(Myanmar) History
Today's inhabitants of Myanmar (formerly Burma) are descendants of a tribe that migrated from Tibet and China in about AD 800. The country was unified in 1044 under the first Burmese empire but fell to invading Mongol troops in 1253. It went through successive periods of disintegration and reunification until the British arrived in 1824 and began colonization. Despite the country's tradition of devout Buddhism, with its tenets of compassion and serenity, Myanmar has known a great deal of brutality: The country's last king, Thibaw, who ruled from 1878 to 1885, sewed up his opponents in red velvet sacks and had them trampled to death by elephants. During World War II, the country was the scene of fierce fighting after the Japanese invaded. Burma became independent in 1948, and for 26 years (from 1962-1988) it was subject to the "Burmese way of socialism," a blend of isolationism, communism and Buddhism that had a devastating effect on the standard of living. By the mid 1980s, it had gone from being a net exporter of food to being one of the world's poorest nations. Rejecting foreign investment and trade, Burma's government seemed to want to shut the world out.

License Plate History of Burma/Myanmar I have had a long correspondence with a man in Rangoon, Burma. This page is based on that correspondence and the excellent book "Registration Plates of the World, Third Edition". The first thing to clear up is the proper name of the country. Myanmar is Burma in the Burmese language. Myanmar is to Burma what Deutschland is to Germany or Côte d’Ivoire is to Ivory Coast. In 1989 Burma changed its country name to Myanmar on its stamps and much was made of this fact but I’ve noticed that whenever my correspondents refer to their country it is always referred to as Burma. The history of license plates in Burma fall naturally into three periods. Nobody is sure when license plates began to be used in Burma but by the mid-1930’s they were in use. The first period is from around 1930 to 1953. During most of this period the British ruled Burma and plates were in western characters. This continued during the early years of independence. It was not until 1953 that plates in Burmese characters were required. The second period lasted until 1996. The third period began in 1996. A fourth period could be added. From 1941 to 1944 Burma was occupied by the Japanese. It is not known what types of plates were in use during this period. This period is outside the scope of this page. It is important to remember that in Burma there are two types of license plates, registration plates and general number plates. Registration plates are issued to a particular vehicle while general number plates are issued to firms representing vehicle manufacturers. They are used on vehicles until the vehicle is registered by its new owner. Supposedly this takes place within a month or so and the plate is returned to the firm for reuse on another vehicle. In many places this type of plate is called a temporary plate but its use is different in Burma.

A military-dominated regime led by the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) held power for the next 26 years. There were no free elections, and freedom of expression and association were almost entirely denied. Resistance to the regime occasionally flared, but student and worker demonstrations in the 1960s and 1970s were brutally crushed. torture, political imprisonment, and other human rights abuses were common. Throughout this period, costly guerrilla wars with ethnic opposition groups along the country's frontiers continued.

The Nation we know as Burma was first formed during the goldenage of Pagan in the 11th century. King Anawratha ascended the throne in 1044, uniting Burma under his monarchy. His belief in Buddhism lead him to begin building the temples and pagodas for which the city of Pagan (above) is renowned. Pagan became the first capital of a Burmese kingdom that included virtually all of modern Burma. The golden age of pagan reached its peak in during the reign of Anawratha's successor,Kyanzitta (1084-1113), another devout Buddhist, under whom it aquired the name
