Historical Geography of Burma:
Creation of enduring patterns in the Pyu period
Pyu civilization flourished during most of the first millennium AD at an urban and complex level, and three patterns established by the Pyu were to leave major imprints on the historical geography of Burma that endured until the late nineteenth century, when the colonial conquest transformed the country demographically and economically. Firstly, the Pyu preferred settlement in the Dry Zone, particularly in the valleys of the tributaries of Burma's greatest rivers; secondly, there was development of a repertoire of Pyu irrigation works operating on a variety of scales and firmly imbedded in social structures as well as in these particular environments and economies; and thirdly, at a time of dominance of Mahayana sects in Indian Buddhism, the Pyus adopted Theravada Buddhism, thereby striking a note that has reverberated in Burma ever since. * By JANICE STARGARDT . Throughout c. 1,400 years, the Pyu demonstrated a consistent preference for a particular environmental niche in Burma: the perennial, but highly seasonal tributary streams of Burma's Dry Zone, which flow into its great rivers, the Irrawaddy, the Sittang, the Chindwin, and the Mu. Facts about Burma
World Facts Index Britain conquered Burma over a period of 62 years (1824-1886) and incorporated it into its Indian Empire. Burma was administered as a province of India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony; independence outside of the Commonwealth was attained in 1948. Gen. NE WIN dominated the government from 1962 to 1988, first as military ruler, then as president, and later as political kingmaker. Despite multiparty elections in 1990 that resulted in the main opposition party winning a decisive victory, the ruling military junta refused to hand over power. Key opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient AUNG SAN SUU KYI, under house arrest from 1989 to 1995, was again placed under house detention from September 2000 to May 2002 and again in May 2003; her supporters are routinely harassed or jailed.

Yangon Myanmar is well known as a land with glittering golden pagodas and teeming white-washed stupas. The Country is unique in so far it has managed to preserve its beautiful natural environment, traditional customs and ancient cultural heritage unlike so many countries where concrete has been the order of the day. The British called the country Burma, presumably after the majority race the Bamar, but the name Myanmar was the official name of the country since at least the time of Marco Polo. Myanmar again became the official name in 1989 although some still use the colonial name Burma.

Annual rainfall varies from 500cm in the coastal regions to 75 cm and less in the central dry zone. Mean temperature ranges are from 32°C in the coastal and delta areas to 21°C in the Northern lowlands.

iExplore offers a large selection of Myanmar trips . When you travel to Myanmar, make sure to visit destinations like Mandalay Yangoon and Bagan . But before you travel to Myanmar , be sure to educate yourself on all that you can expect with this Myanmar travel guide. Myanmar presents a dilemma. On the one hand, it has a timeless beauty - it feels like something out of a dream. It's one of the last remaining places where you can catch a glimpse of Old Asia - of men and women in traditional longyis walking beside golden pagodas and dilapidated colonial buildings as horse carts and vintage taxis ply the streets. On the other hand, the group of generals who rule the country have combined some of the worst aspects of Old Asia with some of the less admirable aspects of their more modernized neighbors. Their contradictory impulses - to keep the country closed and tightly under control while desperately attempting to lure foreign investors and travelers - make for a very unsettling place. We think that adventurous travelers who choose to visit Myanmar, despite and because of the repression of its people, will find the experience both memorable and haunting.
