Bookstore Burma covers an area o f more than 240,000 square miles, equivalent to an area roughly the size of France and Belgium combined. In 1941 the population was around 17 million people. The popular perception is of a land covered in dense jungle but the terrain fought over between 1942 and 1945 was more varied. Communications were generally poor, there being few roads or railways, and tended to be dominated by the main waterways. Almost all routes ran north-south, following the natural grain of the country. Borders The western border, that with India, also runs along a mountain range - from the Himalayas near Fort Herz in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south. The range includes the Naga Hills in the north, the Chin Hills in the centre and the Arakan Yomas in the south. The Naga Hills rise to around 12,000 feet, the Chin Hills have peaks between 8,000 and 10,000 feet, while the Arakan Yomas are much lower. The mountains are covered in dense jungle up to a height of 6,000 feet. Inland - Waterways, Plains and Hills

Burma Road, Myanmar Political Geography
Related Category: Myanmar Political Geography Burma Road, in China and Myanmar, extending from the Myanmarese railhead of Lashio to Kunming, Yunnan prov., China. About 700 mi (1,130 km) long and constructed through rough mountain country, it was a remarkable engineering achievement. Undertaken by the Chinese after the start of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and completed in 1938, it was used to transport war supplies landed at Rangoon and shipped by railroad to Lashio. This traffic increased in importance to China after the Japanese took effective control of the Chinese coast and of Indochina. The Ledo Road (later called the Stilwell Road) from Ledo, India, into Myanmar was begun in Dec., 1942. In 1944 the Ledo Road reached Myitkyina and was joined to the Burma Road. Both roads have lost their former importance and are in a state of disrepair. See study by L. Anders (1965).

They subsequently switched sides and began selling the military junta with the majority of its arms in exchange for increased access to Burmese markets and a navy base on Coco island in the Andaman Sea. The influx of Chinese arms turned the tide in Burma against the ethnic insurgencies, many of which had relied indirectly on Chinese complicity. As a result the military junta of Burma is highly reliant on the Chinese for their currently high level of power. Relations with India: As a result of increased Chinese influence in Burma as well as the safe haven and arms trafficking occurring along the Indo-Burmese border India has sought in recent years to shore up ties with the military junta. Numerous economic arrangement have been established including a roadway connecting the isolated provinces of Northeastern India with Mandalay which opens up trade with China, Burma, and gives access to the Burmese ports.
