    History
    Early History
By about A.D. 1100 the principal inhabitants of the western part of present-day Burkina Faso were the Bobo, Lobi, and Gurunsi. Invaders from present-day Ghana conquered central and E Burkina Faso, establishing the Mossi states of Ouagadougou, Yatenga, and Tengkodogo in the center and the state of Gourma in the east. The conquerors were far outnumbered by their subjects, but by using religion (based on ancestor worship) and a complex administrative system (which allowed for some local autonomy) they created powerful states that endured for more than 500 years. Ouagadougou was headed by the Morho Naba and at its peak was divided into several provinces, which were subdivided into a total of about 300 districts. The Mossi states had strong armies, which included cavalry units, and were able to repel most attacks by the Mali and Songhai empires during the period from the 14th to 16th cent.
    The Colonial Period
Near the end of the 19th-century scramble for African territory among the European powers, France gained control over the region. In 1895 the French peacefully negotiated a protectorate over Yatenga; in 1896 they forcefully occupied Ouagadougou; and in 1897 they annexed Gourma and the lands of the Bobo, Lobi, and Gurunsi peoples. An Anglo-French agreement in 1898 established the boundary with the Gold Coast (now Ghana).

From UN Integrated Regional Information Network, 14 April 1999
Paris - The complete edition of UNESCO'S General History of Africa - a 3-million-year history of the entire African continent - has been presented in Tripoli by the International Scientific Committee responsible for the publication (People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya) at its final meeting held April 10-12, ending over twenty years of work by nearly 350 scholars. The complete edition of the General History of Africa - eight volumes of 800 to 1,000 pages each - is now available in three languages (Arabic, English and French). Parts have already been published in Spanish (five volumes of the complete edition), as well as four volumes in Portuguese, Chinese (also four), three in Japanese, two in Italian, Hawsa, Peulh, Korean (two volumes of the abridged version) and Kiswahili (one volume). During the meeting which will end this evening with a ceremony in the presence of the Libyan head of state, Colonel Moammar Gadhafi, and UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor, the President of the Committee, A. Adu Boahen (Ghana), took stock of the publication and considered its potentials.

History and Government
History:
Internal self-government was granted in 1957, and full independence (as Upper Volta) three years later. The early years of independence were largely dominated by the military, notably the regime of General Sangoul J Lamizana, who ousted the civilian government of Maurice Yameogo in 1966 and ruled until 1980. Lamizana was followed by another military government, followed in turn by a rebellion in 1983 which brought a group of young radical officers to power under the leadership of Thomas Sankara.
Congrès pour la Démocratie et le Progrès , on a narrow victory after its representation was cut in half from its previous level.
Tuareg (a nomadic tribe whose traditional territories straddle all three countries) rebellions in those countries and associated border disputes. Relations with France, the former colonial power which still retains considerable influence in the region, are fairly good.
Government: The June 1991 constitution allows for an elected President, who holds executive power, to be elected for a seven-year period. Representatives to the legislative assembly, the 111-strong

Introduction
In addition to its specific activities in Mali and the Casamance region of Senegal, the regional delegation continued its cooperation with the National Societies of the region, conducting dissemination sessions for various target groups, encouraging instruction in humanitarian law, and on a practical level, helping to fight epidemics of cholera, promote public health and give first-aid training to local volunteers.
Cape Verde
Following an ICRC mission to Cape Verde, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deposited the instruments of accession to Additional Protocols I and II with the Swiss government on 16 March 1995. The government of Cape Verde also made a declaration recognizing the competence of the International Fact-Finding Commission.
Gambia A new attempted counter-coup on 27January resulted in the imprisonment of a number of people accused of being involved, including the Vice-President and the Minister of the Interior. The ICRC visited 24 individuals arrested in this connection and a further 80 security detainees held at Mile 2 prison and in hospitals and barracks for reasons related to events in 1994. Guinea Bissau The regional delegate went on mission to Guinea-Bissau in mid-September in order to establish contact with the government and the National Society, particularly with the aim of reactivating the latter and enhancing its management structure.

From The International Journal of African Historical Studies
One of the last survivors of the Volta-Bani anticolonial war of 1915-1916 passed away two years ago. His name was Tamini Yambore, after the forest in which he was born. His mother had fled the colonial onslaught that razed her village. Many of the villages in this region of southwestern Burkina Faso were burned to the ground during the anticolonial war. These events are still marked on the collective consciousness of villagers; Tamini Yambore and others were the living repositories of that consciousness. But unfortunately with the deaths of people like Yambore those memories are fading away. The war has also largely been disregarded in academic and education circles as well, despite its size, the resulting massive displacement and mortality, and the changes it brought to the political and social landscape of West Africa. Saul and Royer's exciting book redresses this gap in an important analysis of the origins, organization, and motivations of the actors in this war.
French colonial powers generally assumed that the conflict began in reaction to a conscription campaign; however, the authors describe several events that precipitated the initial uprising and its spread. Saul and Royer argue that the shadow of World War I loomed directly over the conflict. As a response to the war, France pulled out personnel from their West African colonies, lessening their presence in the Volta region, where colonization was fairly incomplete to begin with. This resulted in local leaders' perception of French colonization as weak and waning, and thus vulnerable to attack.

Itinerary to a nation An enclave of 274,000 km² in the heart of western Africa, Burkina Faso is a landlocked country, 500 Km from the Atlantic. Ouagadougou, the capital city counts some one million inhabitants.
The country borders Mali, Benin, Togo, Ghana and the Ivory Coast in the north, south-east and south respectively.
Three main great rivers run through the country: The Mouhoun in the west and the Nazinon and the Nakembe which cut across the flat relief at the centre of the country.
High plains of about 300 to 400 metres comprise the major part of the territory, though a few elevations dot the country. The highest one, Mount Tenakourou in the west near the frontier of Mali, measures 749 metres, followed by the peak of Nahouri in the south.
The tropical weather in Burkina Faso is divided into two seasons:
  • The dry season from November to May
  • The rainy season from June to October
The dry season consists of a cool period from November to February and a warm one from March to May. The weather in Burkina, generaly speaking, is healthy, sunny, warm and dry.
    An eventful history
The historic existence of powerful kingdoms in the east, the centre and the north mark the history of Ouagadougou, Tenkodogo, Yatenga and the Kingdom of Gourma. The western region was inhabited by non-organized societies in centralised states.

Benin
Official name: Republic of Benin
Independence from France: 1960
In 1625 indigenous slave traders, known as the Fon, founded the kingdom of Dahomey. They subsequently conquered the neighboring kingdoms of Dan and Allada and extended their kingdom to the coast near Porto Novo. A trading post was set up in 1857 by the French at Grand-Popo. The Dahomey King, Behanzin, was defeated by the French when conflict broke out following dispute by the French against continued Dahomey slavery. In 1892 Dahomey became a French protectorate and was absorbed into French West Africa in 1904. Independence from the French was gained in 1960 and the country was renamed Benin in 1975.
Burkina
Also known as Burkina Faso
Independence from France: 1960
From the 16th to the early 19th century this was the kingdom of Ouagadougo, one of the Mossi empire. In the early 19th century the Mossi empire broke down and was subject to almost uninterrupted war for 50 years prior to the arrival of the French. At the end of the 19th century the great Dyula warlord, Samori Ture, was expelled by the French and it became part of French West Africa. Independence from the French was achieved in 1960 and the country was named Upper Volta. The country was renamed Burkina in 1984.
