Burkina Faso
History
Much of Burkina Faso is populated by descendants of the Mossi empire, founded when a band of horsemen from nearby Ghana galloped through at the turn of the 15th century. Unlike other African countries that governed through non-hierarchical village systems, the Mossi organised a blue-blooded empire that even The Firm at Windsor Castle would be hard pressed to match. They developed courts of law, administrative bodies, ministerial positions, and a cavalry to protect the realm. The later proved to be critical in resisting the hostile advances of their Muslim neighbours and explains why, even today, Burkina Faso is one of the few West African countries that's not predominantly Muslim. Things remained relatively stable in Upper Volta (as it was then known) until the French began nosing around in 1897. Having already moved into the neighbourhood, they decided to bring a little imperial je ne s'ais quoi to the area by subdividing the region more times than an acre block in Manhattan. Bits of Upper Volta were given away to Mali, Niger and C´te d'Ivoire with all the sang-froid of a generous thief. The final nail in the coffin was the blackbirding of natives from Upper Volta to work on French plantations in neighbouring C´te d'Ivoire. For the next 60 years C´te d'Ivoire remained the precious princess of the region and Upper Volta the poor and ugly second cousin. When outright colonisation finally started to lose its sex appeal in the middle of the 20th century, Upper Volta was one of the most vocal in calling for the return of independence. In 1960, Maurice Yam©ogo, himself a Mossi, was elected as the country's first president. Unfortunately Yam©ogo confused electoral success with a mandate to do as he pleased. A set of disastrous economic policies, coupled with a liberal attitude toward corruption, led to riots and demonstrations by the general populace. In 1966, a military-led coup ousted Yam©ogo from office for, among other things, feathering his own nest with public funds. The power vacuum created by Yam©ogo's absence ushered in nearly two decades of coups and counter coups, culminating in Captain Thomas Sankara, a young left-wing socialist, taking over the reins.

Cote d'Ivoire
History
Not much is known about C´te d'Ivoire prior to the arrival of European ships in the 1460s. The major ethnic groups came relatively recently from neighbouring areas: the Kru people migrated from Liberia around 1600; the Senoufo and Lubi moved southward from Burkina Faso and Mali. It wasn't until the 18th and 19th centuries that the Akan people, including the Baoul©, migrated from Ghana into the eastern area of the country and the Malink© migrated from Guinea into the northwest. Compared to neighbouring Ghana, C´te d'Ivoire suffered little from the slave trade. European slaving and merchant ships preferred other areas along the coast with better harbours. France took an interest in the 1840s, enticing local chiefs to grant French commercial traders a monopoly along the coast. Thereafter, the French built naval bases to keep out non-French traders and began a systematic conquest of the interior. They accomplished this only after a long war in the 1890s against Mandinka forces, mostly from Gambia. Guerrilla warfare by the Baoul© and other eastern groups continued until 1917. The French had one overriding goal: to stimulate the production of exports. Coffee, cocoa and palm oil crops were soon planted along the coast. C´te d'Ivoire stood out as the only West African country with a sizeable population of 'settlers'; elsewhere in West and Central Africa, the French and English were largely bureaucrats. As a result, a third of the cocoa, coffee and banana plantations were in the hands of French citizens and a hated forced-labour system became the backbone of the economy.

History: Burkina Faso was once a part of the Great Mossi Empire, one of the strongest of ancient African kingdoms. The Mossi kingdom was established by invaders from the south, who displaced the Bobo, Lobi and Gurunsi tribes that occupied the region at the time. The region itself is in the path of several historic migrations of population. The Mossi Empire was still in place when the whole region was annexed by the French in 1896. After a period as a part of the colony of Upper Senegal-Niger, the territory was reorganised as the separate colony of Upper Volta in 1919. It was then carved up between Côte d’Ivoire, Niger and ‘French Sudan’ in 1932, only to be reconstituted as an independent entity in 1947, as an ‘overseas territory’ of France. Internal self-government was granted in 1957, with full independence (as Upper Volta) following three years later. The early years of independence were largely dominated by the military, notably the regime of General Sangoul J Lamizana, who ousted the civilian government of Maurice Yameogo in 1966 and ruled until 1980. Lamizana was followed by another military government, followed in turn by a rebellion in 1983, which brought a group of young radical officers to power under the leadership of Thomas Sankara.

Much of Burkina Faso is populated by descendants of the Mossi empire, founded when a band of horsemen from nearby Ghana galloped through at the turn of the 15th century. Mossi tribes people bear a scar on their right cheek with two sidelong scars across the horizontal scar. Situated in the Sahel region south of the Sahara, Burkina Faso is 500 Km from the Atlantic Ocean. Three main great rivers run through the country: The Mouhoun in the west and the Nazinon and the Nakembe which cut across the flat relief at the centre of the country. Two important rivers cross the country, the Black Volta and the White Volta. High plains of about 300 to 400 metres comprise the major part of the territory, though a few elevations dot the country. The highest one, Mount Tenakourou in the west near the frontier of Mali, measures 749 metres, followed by the peak of Nahouri in the south. The territory is made up of a great low lying plateau, and has a mosonic climate with summer rains. In winter the prevailing north wind is turning the country more and more into desertland. There are two principal cities, Ouagadougou, and Bobo-Dioulasso. Burkina Faso means "the land (or house) of the incorruptible people".

Burkina Faso - History The historic existence of powerful kingdoms in the East, the Center and the North marks the history of Ouagadougou, Tenkodogo, Yatenga and Gourma. The western region was composed of decentralized states. The various ethnic groups managed to maintain their unity and independence, and successfully drove back Sudanese conquerors and supporters of Islam. It was only at the end of the 19 th century that the territory of Upper Volta became a disputed target of the colonial powers of France, Great Britain, and Germany. France conquered the country in 1896-97. In 1904, the country was integrated into the colony of Haut-Senegal-Niger. Fifteen years later, it was withdrawn from this group and became the colony of Upper Volta. In 1932, another change occurred and Upper Volta was sliced up and placed under the administration of its neighboring colonial territories. In 1947, Upper Volta regained its former borders and kept its colonial name for 37 years. On December 11, 1958, the Republic of Upper Volta was declared and its independence asserted on August 5, 1960. On August 4, 1983, a popular uprising led by young military officers took power and proclaimed the Revolution. During the first anniversary of this revolution, on August 4, 1984, Upper Volta became Burkina Faso, the "Country of the Upright People". A new national anthem, motto and flag were adopted. In 1987, President Blaise Compaoré advocated the "Movement of Rectification" which led to the establishment of democratic institutions, leading to political freedom and economic renewal in the framework of regional and global integration.

Burkina Faso Forum ... Transnational Issue Introduction Burkina Faso Background: Independence from France came to Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) in 1960. Repeated military coups during the 1970s and 1980s were followed by multiparty elections in the early 1990s. Burkina Faso's high population density and limited natural resources result in poor economic prospects for the majority of its citizens. Every year, several hundred thousand seasonal farm workers seek employment in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana and are adversely affected by instability in those regions. This semi-arid region of Africa extends from Senegal on the west, through Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Sudan, to Ethiopia on the east. Burkina Faso sits at the edge of the Sahel, locked in by Benin, Togo and Ghana to the southeast, Ivory Coast to the south, Mali to the west and Niger to the north. About twice the size of Colorado, it is one of the smallest territories in West Africa, but one of the most heavily populated. The climate in Burkina Faso is similar to that of other Sahel countries, featuring two distinct seasons: the dry season lasts from November until May and the wet season from June through October. The hottest time of the year falls between March and June, and dusty Harmattan winds blow incessantly between the months of December and February.

These beautifully decorated houses at Tiébélé are more than 300 years old, and are made of timber and mud Burkina Faso is home to more than 60 ethnic groups, each speaking its own language. Some of these peoples, such as the Bobo, Bissa, Gourounsi and Dogon, were living in the area as early as the 12th century. Between the 13th and 15th centuries the Mossi rode North with their cavalry to establish new kingdoms which came to dominate the region. Others, such as the Fulani herders of the north and the Gourma in the East, moved in to complete the mosaic of peoples which make up the country today. The Mossi are famous for having the longest continuous royal dynasty in West Africa, dating back over 500 years. In 1896 the French invaded and ousted Naaba Wobgo, known as the Elephant Emperor, and the area became part of French West Africa. In 1919 Upper Volta was created, with borders similar to those of Burkina Faso today. After the Second World War (1939-45) political activity intensified throughout French West and Equatorial Africa, and the first modern political parties began to emerge. Maurice Yaméogo led the country into independence on 5 August 1960, and became its first President.
