    Bulimia
    I do not have a question but rather a personal story to share. I myself have dealt with bulimia for several years. I want to let your readers know they are not alone! For me, my eating disorder began when I was approximately 15 years old. I am now 23. I want to let those who are struggling with an eating disorder know that it is possible to over come bulimia and/or anorexia. I myself have not entirely beaten this disease but I'm more than half way there. There is an end to all the craziness, trust me, but it takes a lot of time, work, effort and the will to get better. You have to take each day at a time and you have to keep focused. I had to quit university, the year I was to graduate and believe me it was the toughest decision for me to make. I chose to delay my graduation in order to join group therapy in my hometown. I think back to this day how grateful I am that I made that decision and how grateful I am to have had such supportive friends and family members. When it comes down to it people are very caring and understanding when you come to them for help. I would like to offer my help in any way possible in order to help others beat their eating disorders. I found that one of the best solutions is talking. Many bulimics out there feel like there is nowhere to turn or maybe they feel like they will be looked down. I'm still glad to see that there is somewhere to find help. Having an eating disorders are not a very easy thing to admit and I'm very glad to see that there are individuals strong enough to come forth with their problem. I know in my case that if it was not for my five roommates God knows where I would be now.

The affected person then uses various methods such as vomiting or laxative abuse to prevent weight gain. Someone with bulimia may also suffer from anorexia nervosa , an eating disorder involving severe, chronic weight loss that proceeds to starvation, but many bulimics do not suffer from anorexia. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top In bulimia, eating binges may occur as often as several times daily for many months. These binges cause a sense of self-disgust, which leads to compensatory behaviors like self-induced vomiting or excessive exercise. A person with bulimia may also abuse laxatives, diuretics or enemas in order to prevent weight gain.

    "Whenever I feel lonely, unsure of myself, or angry, I end up eating. It's like I have no control. I put food inside me as quickly as I can and then when I can't eat another thing I make myself sick. Then I hate myself."
    Bulimia refers both to uncontrolled eating and to related thoughts, feelings, behaviors,and ways of seeing yourself.
    The problem with bulimia, you find yourself eating large amounts of food in an uncontrolled way, then heading for the bathroom to throw it all up. You also may be using laxatives, vigorous exercise, and fasting to try and control your weight. Eating binges may be pleasurable, but self-criticism and even self-loathing, guilt, fear, loneliness, and low self-confidence often follow. You will probably feel as if your life is dominated by thoughts of food.
    The problem usually begins quite innocently. You may start with a diet to lose weight and to feel better about yourself. But diets are hard to stick to and you may overeat because you feel hungry or because you are feeling anxious, depressed. angry, frustrated, or just lonely. For a short while, food is a comfort. Then that full feeling makes you feel guilty and a failure. At first purging (inducing vomiting) seems an ideal answer-it's as if you can eat without facing the consequences of weight gain. But it just exaggerates the bad feelings you started with, and it leaves you worried about being discovered and fearful of what others will think. This pattern of feeling bad, eating, purging, and feeling bad again becomes a vicious cycle that can eventually control your life and leave you feeling hopeless and helpless to change.

    http://www.priory-hospital.co.uk/htm/bulimi.htm
    Introducing Bulimia Nervosa Dr Peter Rowan MBBS.MRCPsych.
    General Description
    Signs that may indicate that there is a problem include a tendency to leave the table immediately after a meal. Vomiting is most frequently induced by forcing two fingers of the right hand down the throat. This often causes a chronic blister just below the knuckle where it rubs on the upper teeth. Repeated vomiting quite often leads to swelling of the salivary glands that show as soft swellings at the base of the ears or just under the chin. If it goes on for many years the swellings become hard and permanent. Three Types of Bulimia
    Bulimia Nervosa is best considered as three separate illnesses that share the essential features described above. They will be discussed below under three different headings; Simple, Anorexic, and Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa. There is quite a lot of overlap between them so that there are a number of sufferers who show characteristics that belong midway between these subgroups. Simple Bulimia Nervosa Anorexic Bulimia Nervosa Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa Causes of Bulimia Nervosa
    Once the illness has become established the trigger to binge is often partly or wholly related to feelings. Periods of depression, boredom, and anger are likely to increase the risk especially when the sufferer is alone. It is a habit forming behaviour and some girls plan being alone and having food available in order to make bulimia easier. They can become addicted to the emotional feelings that are generated in this way.

    What is Bulimia?
    Bulimia, also called bulimia nervosa, is a psychological eating disorder. Bulimia is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control (purging). Inappropriate methods of weight control include vomiting, fasting, enemas, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, or compulsive exercising. Excessive shape and weight concerns are also characteristics of bulimia. A binge is an episode where an individual eats a much larger amount of food than most people would in a similar situation. Binge eating is not a response to intense hunger. It is usually a response to depression, stress, or self esteem issues. During the binge episode, the individual experiences a loss of control. However, the sense of a loss of control is also followed by a short-lived calmness. The calmness is often followed by self-loathing. The cycle of overeating and purging usually becomes an obsession and is repeated often. Bulimia was only diagnosed as its own eating disorder in the 1980s People with bulimia can look perfectly normal. Most of them are of normal weight, and some may be overweight. Women with bulimia tend to be high achievers.

    Each year millions of people in the United States are affected by serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorders. More than 90 percent of those afflicted are adolescent and young adult women. It is suggested that the reason women in this age group are particularly vulnerable to eating disorders is because of their tendency to go on strict diets to achieve an "ideal" figure. Researchers have found that such stringent dieting can play a key role in triggering eating disorders. The consequences of eating disorders can be severe - one in 10 cases of anorexia nervosa leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, other medical complications, or suicide. Increasing awareness of the dangers of eating disorders - sparked by medical studies and extensive media coverage of the illness - has led many people to seek help. Nevertheless, some people with eating disorders refuse to admit they have a problem and refuse treatment. What is bulimia nervosa?

    Diagnostic Guidelines
    For a definite diagnosis, all the following are required: (a) There is a persistent preoccupation with eating, and an irresistible craving for food; the patient succumbs to episodes of overeating in which large amounts of food are consumed in short periods of time.
    (b) The patient attempts to counteract the "fattening" effects of food by one or more of the following: self-induced vomiting; purgative abuse, alternating periods of starvation; use of drugs such as appetite suppressants, thyroid preparations or diuretics. When bulimia occurs in diabetic patients they may choose to neglect their insulin treatment.
    (c) The psychopathology consists of a morbid dread of fatness and the patient sets herself or himself a sharply defined weight threshold, well below the premorbid weight that constitutes the optimum or healthy weight in the opinion of the physician. There is often, but not always, a history of an earlier episode of anorexia nervosa, the interval between the two disorders ranging from a few months to several years. This earlier episode may have been fully expressed, or may have assumed a minor cryptic form with a moderate loss of weight and/or a transient phase of amenorrhoea. Includes:
    * bulimia NOS
    * hyperorexia nervosa Differential diagnosis.
