We have some friends in Bulgaria (Ina and Marty) so we went there a couple of times and we spent a wonderful time. Though Bulgaria is a beautiful country to visit, I have no idea how a regular tourist could do it, as it is not very touristic friendly in general terms. We rented a car with our friends and followed them to a great variety of places, all of them fascinating. Sofia , the capital city, has no great things to offer, and all the fun is in the rest of the country. The first place to visit is very near from Sofia, an ancient monastery between the colourful paintings, the black and white archs and the green tall trees outside is breathtaking. It is one of the rare places in the world that is unique and incredible to see, but it is not ruined by tourists. There are a couple of them, to be honest: always a Japanese here and there with his camera taking pictures of everything, but not the flood of people you would usually find in the Sixtine Chapel, for example. The surrounding mountains are an incredible context for this place, that was saved from the destruction of the Turks thanks to them. Most of the Bulgarian culture survived the five centuries oppression of the Turks hidden in monasteries, that is why they are so important. Another monastery we visited is the oldest Monastery in Bulgaria:

Former king to be Bulgaria PM
Restoring the monarchy is not on the former king's agenda SOFIA, Bulgaria Former King Simeon II has been named Bulgaria's next prime minister. Simeon, whose centre-right National Movement won a landslide victory in June elections, will form a new government within 10 days, party leaders announced on Thursday. "With great emotion but with my typical sense of responsibility, and having in mind the trust that the voters gave me on June 17, I accept this proposal," Simeon said. Crowned king during World War II, he was forced to flee the communists aged nine. He returned from exile three months ago to form his party, which promised to end poverty, unemployment and other problems that plagued the country after the fall of communism. Former king seeks Bulgaria coalition
Simeon II has pledged a path of renovation SOFIA, Bulgaria Bulgaria's former king is searching for a coalition ally after his election victory looked set to leave him one vote short of an absolute majority in parliament. Simeon II is on course to win 121 seats in the 240-member chamber, a member of the Central Electoral Commission told Reuters. Nikolai Vasilev, head of Simeon's economic team, said a decision on a coalition was a priority and told Reuters: "The basic question for him is to decide whether he will become prime minister or not." Vasilev had said on Sunday that it was equally likely that Simeon would either become prime minister or remain behind the scenes. Ambassador Charles Magee, head of the election observers mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), said Sunday's election had been a success. About the Embassy
Historical Information about the U.S. Mission
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Bulgaria were established on September 19, 1903, but were broken on December 13, 1941, when Bulgaria declared war on the United States. The post-World War II treaty of peace between the Allies and Bulgaria entered into force September 15, 1947. The first post-war U.S. minister to Bulgaria presented his credentials on November 8, 1947. Relations were suspended in February 1950, however, when Bulgaria refused to withdraw false charges of complicity in espionage made against the U.S. minister during the trial of the Bulgarian Communist Party Leader Traicho Kostov. Another U.S. minister was accredited to Bulgaria in 1960 after Bulgaria withdrew as false the charges made against his predecessor. Following settlement of certain claims of U.S. citizens against Bulgaria as a result of an agreement signed on July 2, 1963, the United States resumed paying government benefits to persons entitled to them living in Bulgaria, and Bulgaria was allowed to open a trade office in New York City. The Bulgarian and U.S. Legations at Washington and Sofia were raised to embassy status on November 28, 1966. A consular agreement was concluded, which became effective on May 28, 1975.
