A History of the Roma of Bulgaria
by Elena Marushiakova and Vesselin Popov
R espected Bulgarian ethnologists Elena Marushiakova and Vesselin Popov of the Minority Studies Society STUDII ROMANI have recently contributed several books and articles to Patrin . This article has been excerpted from their publication The Gypsies of Bulgaria: Problems of the Multicultural Museum Exhibition (1995) T he large-scale settlement of Gypsies ( Roma ) in Bulgarian lands can be traced back approximately to the period of 13th-14th c., some earlier contacts are also possible. Numerous historical sources have records of Gypsy presence in Byzantium (e.g. Constantinople in 1054, Crete in 1322, 1335, 1340, 1350, 1378, 1380, 1384, 1386, etc.) in that period and their entry into Serbia (1322, 1348), Wallachia and Moldova (1340, 1387, 1428). Considering the geographical situation of Bulgarian lands, it is quite logical to suppose that the coming of Gypsies to Bulgaria should be referred to that period. There is a wealth of historical information about Gypsy presence in Bulgarian lands during the times of the Ottoman Empire. A great number of Gypsies came to the Balkans together with the Ottomans (14th c.) either as participants (serving the army) or as accompanying population. Some of them remained in Bulgaria as either nomads or settled Gypsies. References to them as "

Ancient Bulgaria
Evidence, including pottery shards, a fireplace and flint tools, of ancient Bronze Age civilization dating back to at least 2700 BC (and possibly several thousand years earlier) exists in sites such as Magura Cave in the Stara Planina . Thracian tribes have left wall carvings and cave paintings, made with bat guano, which portray people hunting and dancing as well as creatures curiously resembling giraffes and kangaroos.
Danube Bulgaria
Long a crossroads of civilizations (archaeological finds date back to 4600 B.C.), Danube Bulgaria (Bulgaria of present) was first recognized as an independent state in AD and is among the countries in Europe, which survived and kept their original name from the longest time ago. Bulgarian Orthodox Christianity, which became a hallmark of national identity, was established in the 9th century. Bulgaria was ruled by the Byzantine Empire from to and the Ottoman Empire from to . In , Bulgaria adopted a democratic constitution and invited a German nobleman, Alexander of Battenberg , to be prince.

After restoring the national state-hood in 1878 Bulgaria was a constitutional monarchy with a democratic government and a quickly developing economy. The processes of successful growth were discontinued in result to the adventurism of king Ferdinand I that led to the catastrophes of 1913. (when this country had to wage wars against Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, Turkey, and Romania at the same time) and of 1918 (warring against the Entente countries).
1923 and 1934 – Democratically elected governments were toppled via coups d’Etat that brought to power authoritarian regimes.
1941 – Bulgaria entered World War II on the side of the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis. Bulgaria was the only ally of Hitler Germany, which did not allow the killing of its Jewish citizens. It was thanks to king Boris III and to the Bulgarian governments that no hostilities were waged on this country’s territory.

OVERVIEW - The historical development of the Bulgarian lands and the people that inhabited them in the antiquity has been determined by one major factor - their crossroads situation between Europe and Asia. The waves of settlers that swept from both continents into the south or into the north at different times, quite often turned the plains of Thrace, Moesia, Macedonia and the Balkan mountains into an arena of fierce clashes. - The earliest traces of human life on the Bulgarian lands date back to Paleolithic and Mesolithic times. The brilliant drawings in some Bulgarian caves and the flint labor tools are the only remnants of the primitive man, the homo sapiens forebearer. MAP INDEX The World Factbook. Bulgaria Background The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000.

The main population was bulgars - immigrants from Azov region, who conquered the native Finno-Ugrians and Turkish-speaking tribes. The largest towns Bolgar and Buljar in area and population surpassed London, Paris, Kiev, Novgorod and Vladimir of that time. Volga Bulgaria exported to Middle Asia, China, Vizantium, Russia the fur, timber, leather footwear, arms and other handmade goods. The capital of Volga Bulgaria town Bolgar in X-XIV centuries was built of stone and brick. Already the public water supply was here. Nowadays remained the ruins of "The Black Chamber" Mosque, Minor Minaret, Khan's Tomb, Northern Mausoleum, Cathedral Mosque.

BULGARIAN HISTORY
The Bulgarian lands are ancient crossroads. They were populated from remote antiquity and remember many ancient civilizations. The state of Bulgaria has 1300 years old history and according to the statistics it is ranked third (after Greece and Italy) for the number of its archaeological monuments.
The earliest inhabitants of the present Bulgarian lands were the Thracians
Ancient Greek historian Herodotus describes the Thracians as the second biggest tribe in the Ancient world, after the Indians. The most famous Thracians were Spartacus and Orpheus.
Spartacus was born on the territory of present-day town of Sandanski (south-western Bulgaria) and as an adolescent was sold into slavery in ancient Rome. Later he became the legendary gladiator that led the biggest slave uprising in the Antiquity.
Orpheus is known for his incredible talent as a musician and singer. He was born near the present village of Guella in the Rhodope mountain a little before the Trojan war. The legend tells that he was the greatest singer of all time and even the wild animals stopped to listen to his music. Also he took part in the quest of the Argonauts together with Jason and Heracles.
