History The Bulgarian lands are ancient crossroads. It remembers many ancient civilizations and great peoples which wrote the pages of its turbulent history: bronze and iron spears and arrows, ruins of palaces and cities, wise words carved on rocks and stone columns, written on parchment and leather. The Thracians bequeathed us the famous tombs near Kazanluk and Sveshtari, the unique gold treasures from Panagyurishte and Rogozen. The Hellenes built the beautiful coastal towns of Apollonia, Anhialo and Messambria, and Romans - ancient Aescus, Nikopolis ad Istrum and Nove. Huns, Gothes and Averas later passes through our lands. Around the mid-7th century the Slavs came from the north across the Danube and reached as far as the Black Sea and the Adriatic. They were followed by the Bulgarians of Khan Asparouh... In fact, there were only three states in Europe in 681: The Western Roman Empire, BULGARIA, and The Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium)... BULGARIA - a brief history outline
Dimiter Markovski
BULGARIA'S RELATIONS WITH BYZANTIUM
These relations to a large extent determined the political situation in the Balkans. What we have in mind here are not the relations between two Balkan nations. Byzantium was an agglomeration of various ethnic communities - within her borders lived various Hellenized peoples, apart from the Greeks. In the multi-national empire, which stretched across three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa, the dominant language was Greek, which in the seventh century was made the official state and religious language. In this sense we can only conditionally differentiate between the Greek and Byzantine identity. The Greeks themselves, the Thracians, and the other Balkan peoples, were conquered by Rome. The Greeks called themselves Hellenes, and their country Hellas. The Romans were the first to call them Greeks - after the Grecoes, a small tribe in Epirus who were the most familiar to the Romans. This name was later adopted by the Slavs. The relations between Bulgaria and Byzantium from the foundation of the Bulgarian state in 681 to the end of the fourteenth century when Bulgaria was conquered by the Ottomans, had two major features. The Bulgarian rulers, on the one hand, aspired to conquer Constantinople and inherit the empire. On the other hand, the Byzantines regarded the Bulgarian state as temporarily holding imperial territory and tried by various means - wars, political dealing and manoeuvering, religion and culture, to subjugate it. Byzantium eventually succeeded in conquering the Bulgarian state and kept it for more tFian a century and a half - from 1018 to 1187. For this reason the history of Mediaeval Bulgaria is divided into three periods: the First Bulgarian Kingdom, Byzantine domination and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.

The Jewish community in Bulgaria dates back to before the destruction of the second Temple (70 C.E.). Jews settled on Bulgarian soil during the Middle Ages and the Byzantine era, but the Jewish community grew most significantly after the expulsion of Spanish Jewry in 1492. The Turkish Sultan allowed Jews fleeing the Inquisition to settle in the Ottoman Empire, where they were treated with tolerance both by the authorities and by the population of the Peninsula as a whole. These Ladino-speaking migrants, known as Sepharades, are the ancestors of almost 90 percent of the Jews in Bulgaria today. JDC Begins Working in Bulgaria
JDC’s work in Bulgaria began in the aftermath of World War I, when it sent funds to help support refugees and newly impoverished families. In 1921, JDC helped build the Queen Eleanora Jewish Orphan Home in Sofia, and it continued to fund a reconstruction program until 1930, when the community regained financial stability. On the eve of World War II, Bulgaria was home to approximately 48,000 Jews, who were living primarily in the capital, Sofia, and in Plovdiv. The Holocaust
Anti-Jewish legislation was introduced after World War I, and popular anti-Semitism intensified throughout the 1920s, setting the stage for Bulgaria’s eventual alliance with Nazi Germany. As part of this alliance, Bulgaria deported 20,000 Jews from Thrace and Macedonia, areas then under Bulgarian rule, to German concentration camps. In 1943, under pressure from the Third Reich, the Bulgarian Parliament passed a deportation order for the Jews in Bulgaria proper. However, all segments of Bulgarian society – the general population, the press, the intelligentsia, key members of Parliament, the Church, and the king – protested, causing the government to rescind the deportation order. Not a single Bulgarian Jew was deported.

http://www.wutheringjolie.com/bulgaria.html
Famous Bulgarians - in Bulgaria there are many, especially actors and musicians, and some of them are in fact worthy. Others aren't. Worldwide there are a few who are well-known, but chances are they'll only be familiar to those interested in the respective fields (computers, writing, politics, sports). Right now I can only think of two that may have been mentioned in (recent) international newscasts more than once - the soccer player Hristo Stoitchkov, and our current prime minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha who, as his name suggests, is related to the royal dynasties of Europe and thus (gasp) to Prince William of England. Simeon was supposed to be king after his father, Boris I, but he was exiled when Bulgaria was sold to Stalin after the end of World War 2. Good as these two men are at what they do, people most likely are (or will be, when the movie comes out) a lot more familiar with a completely fictional Bulgarian - J. K. Rowling's Victor Kroum (this should have been the spelling so the name could be pronounced the way it should). He is the dark, ugly, short, slouchy, crooked-nosed, thick-accent-possessing and Hermiony-worshipping star of the otherwise mediocre Bulgarian quidditch team in book 4 of the Harry Potter series, "The Goblet of Fire." Bulgarians having read the book, on the other hand (at least the type that pays attention), must have got familiar with the power of stereotyping, but instead of getting annoyed going into that, I'll only address a few technical issues.

Bulgaria has its asbestos deposits (antophylite and tremolite) as well as regions with natural asbestos admixtures in soil and endemic findings of pleural plaques. The prevalence of endemic pleural plaques has been surveyed in 1973-1978 through a fluorographic examination of the entire population of the endemic region, older than 14. The survey covered 96059 subjects revealing 720 individuals with pleural plaques (1). The majority of the findings (94.6%) were in persons older than 40. The incidence of plaques was greater for antophylite. The existence of regions with asbestos injuries caused by natural admixtures of the mineral in soil has been confirmed in other countries as well (Russia, Cuba, Austria, Greece, Turkey). Figure 1 displays the location of acknowledged endemic regions in the Balkan states.

    HISTORY
Long a crossroads of civilizations (archaeological finds date back to 4600 B.C.), Bulgaria was first recognized as an independent state in AD 681. Bulgarian Orthodox Christanity, which became a hallmark of national identity, was established in the 9th century. Bulgaria was ruled by the Byzantine Empire from 1018 to 1185 and the Ottoman Empire from 1396 to 1878. In 1879, Bulgaria adopted a democratic constitution and invited a German nobleman, Alexander of Battenburg, to be prince. In the early part of the 20th century, in an effort to gain Macedonian and other territories, Bulgaria engaged in two Balkan wars and become allied with Germany during World War I. It suffered disastrous losses as a result. The interwar period was dominated by economic and political instability and by terrorism as political factions, including monarchists and communists, struggled for influence. In World War II, Bulgaria ultimately allied again with Germany but protected its Jewish population of some 50,000 from the Holocaust. When King Boris III died in 1943, political uncertainty heightened. The Fatherland Front, an umbrella coalition led by the Communist Party, was established. This coalition backed neutrality and withdrawal from occupied territories. Bulgaria tried to avoid open conflict with the Soviet Union during the war, but the U.S.S.R. invaded in 1944 and placed the Fatherland Front in control of government.
