Bulgaria, officially Republic of Bulgaria (1994 estimated population 8,800,000), 42,823 square miles (110,912 square kilometers), South Eastern Europe, on the Eastern Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered by the Black Sea (East), Romania (North), Macedonia and Yugoslavia (West), Greece (South), and European Turkey (South East). Central Bulgaria is traversed from east to west by the Balkan Mountains; the Rhodope range, with the country's highest peak, Musala Mountain (9,592 ft/2,923 m) is in the southwest. The principal river is the Danube. The population consists chiefly of Bulgars (86%) and Turks (9%). The Bulgarian Orthodox Church is the predominant religion, but most Turks and some ethnic Bulgarians are Muslims. Bulgarian is the official language.
Sofia city (1990 estimated population 1,221,000) is the capital of Bulgaria is on a high plain surrounded by the Balkan Mountains. Settled by the Thracians, it was held (1st-14th century) by Rome, Byzantium, and the first and second Bulgarian kingdoms. It passed to Turkey in 1382 and to Russia in 1878. After 1879 it was the capital of independent Bulgaria. During World War II the Germans occupied Sofia until 1944, when it fell to Soviet forces.
In AD 679-80 ancient Thrace and Moesia, site of modern Bulgaria, were conquered by Eastern Bulgars, who gradually merged with earlier Slavic settlers and adopted their language. The first Bulgarian empire was established in 681, introduced to Christianity by Boris I (r.852-89) in 865, at the height of its power under Simeon I (r.893-927), and subjugated by the Byzantines in 1018. The second Bulgarian empire rose in 1186 and reached its apex under Ivan II (r.1218-41). In 1396 it was absorbed by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled it for almost five centuries. Turkey's suppression of a Bulgarian revolt (1876) was one of the reasons for the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. The Treaty of San Stefano, which created a large, autonomous Bulgaria, was revised by the Congress of Berlin, which divided Bulgaria into three parts.

St John of Rila, patron saint of Bulgaria The history of Bulgaria begins in the 8th century AD with the arrival in the Balkan Peninsula of the Bulgars , a Turanian or Altaic people related to the Huns (and more distantly to the Hungarians and the Turks ), who had been moving south-westwards across what are now Russia and Ukraine for several hundred years. The Bulgars were governed by hereditary Khans and a class of nobles called boyars . They were polytheists , although by the time of their arrival in Europe some of them were Muslims . They were a warlike people who spent most of their time on horseback, raiding their neighbours and moving from place to place. In the 5th century the Bulgars had lived on the northern coast of the Black Sea . Under pressure from peoples further east, such as the Khazars , one confederation of Bulgars, the Kutriguri , moved into the territory which is now Romania in the 6th century. By the beginning of the 8th century they had crossed the

Bulgaria became the arena of political and cultural rivalry between Constantinople and Rome. In 865, Boris I adopted Christianity, and in 870 Constantinople recognized the independence of the Bulgarian church. Bulgaria received Byzantine culture through the Slavic literary language developed by St. Cyril and St. Methodius in Moravia and brought to the Balkans by their disciples. The first Bulgarian empire reached its height under Simeon I Bogomils Bulgaria crumbled under the attacks of a reinvigorated Byzantium in the 10th cent., and in 1018 it was annexed by Emperor Basil II . Bulgaria under the Turks
In 1330, Macedonian Bulgaria was conquered by Serbia. After the battles of Kosovo (1389) and Nikopol (1396) Bulgaria was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. Turkish rule was often oppressive, and rebellions were frequent. By recognizing the authority of the Orthodox Eastern Church in Constantinople over all Christians in their empire, the Turks undermined the basis of Bulgarian culture. A determined effort was made to destroy Bulgarian Christianity and the Bulgarian language. The role of the Phanariots (see Phanar ) was particularly resented.

SCIC AND THE ENLARGEMENT BULGARIA Bulgaria History Bulgarian History Introduction Established in 681, Bulgaria is one of Europe’s oldest states but its history begins much earlier; there is evidence of Thracians, Hellenes and Romans in ‘Bulgaria’ and of occupation as early as the Palaeolithic period. However, the strongest and enduring cultural influence in the area has been the Slavs who migrated there around the sixth century AD, absorbing both the Thracians and, later, the Bulgar Turkic ‘invaders’. The First Bulgarian Kingdom The First Bulgarian Kingdom existed from 681AD until 1018AD and began when the Bulgar and Slavic tribes united to combat the threat from the Byzantine Empire; this new state fell under the leadership of the proto-Bulgarians and Khan Asparouh and Bulgarian influence expanded north and south of the Danube River.

HISTORY OF BULGARIA
². ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL BULGARIAN HISTORY. The ancient civilizations in the Bulgarian lands date back to 4600 BC. The Varna golden treasure from 2500 BC and other archaeological finds prove the existence of ancient civilization with highly developed culture.
Ancient history in present day Bulgarian lands is associated with the Thracians, who lived on the territory of present-day Bulgaria, Romania, Eastern Serbia, Northern Greece and North Western Turkey. According to the Greek historian Herodotus (5th century BC) the Thracians were the most numerous people in Europe and came second in the world after the Indians (obviously the world Herodotus knew).
Social differentiation in Thrace has gained momentum and has given rise to the first social formations quite early (as far back as the latter half of the II millennium BC). At the beginning of 13th century BC, some Thracian state formations comprising the territorial borders of individual tribes were mentioned by ancient authors in connection with the Trojan War.
At the beginning of the 5th century BC Theres, the ruler of one of the tribes, the Wends organized an unified Thracian state. Under his successors Sparadokus, Sitalkus and Sevtum (5th century BC), all Thracian tribes in present-day Bulgarian lands had been united within the borderlines of the Thraco-Wendish kingdom.
