Welcome,
Friday the 14th of September 2001 we have started a trip that is going to be the greatest thing we have ever done in our lives. Since November last year we have been preparing this trip and now it's really happening…
Our plan was: take our (tracking-)bikes, start in Prague, Czech Republic and cycle through Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran and Pakistan to end in New Delhi, India. Going overland from Europe to Asia, passing several time zones, seeing many different cultures, living for months in a tent, being in the nature, breathing the air and experiencing the wonders of our mother earth, this, maybe, is going to be the trip of our lives. In any case it's our bike trip of 2001. We're on our way…

We,re now in Dahab in the Sinai. We had a long rest in Tarabin and then rode to here. I,ve been in Dahab before and it has changed very much, it has become a very ugly place. Tomorrow we will continue our trip (the very last bits: Dahab Sharm el Sheikh El Tur Suez Cairo
For a long time we couldn,t update our page. Actually it,s a miracle that we are still able to update at all because most of our stuff had been stolen in Syria. Our cameras, spare parts for bikes, our journals, glasses, contact lenses, clothes, etc. were gone. At first even our bikes were gone. (This is a long story). After a couple of strange events in Syria including an arrest by the military police we got to the border where we learned that the police had caught the thieves. One of the thieves had tried to sell our digital camera the very next day in his home town. We didn,t get all of our stuff back but quite a lot and we didn,t expect it to turn up at all anyway so we were glad for everything we got.

Tramps and Thieves?

O n one hand, the fall of communism in Bulgaria has ended state suplancing around the plaza outside Sofia's opulent Sheraton Hotel, it doesn't take long to tell who occupies which rung on Bulgaria's social ladder. As foreign travelers and Bulgarian nouveau riche scurry in and out of the $260-a-night palace, a Gypsy woman discreetly asks a passerby if she wants her fortune read. Two homeless Gypsy children, who spend their nights in a rat-infested vault underneath the parking lot, race to a parking Jeep Cherokee, their hands outstretched. Scrawled on a nearby wall are the words "Death to Gypsies." Like Gypsies in other parts of Europe, the Roma in Bulgaria face segregation in education and the military, discrimination in housing and employment and are routinely the target of police beatings. According to a report by the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Roma "constitute the poorest, least healthy, least educated and most discriminated sector of ... society." And, democratic changes over the past five years have done little to improve their plight. pression of Gypsy culture and has opened the door for an ambitious civil rights movement that serves as a model for the protection of minority rights in other emerging eastern European democracies. On the other, it has unleashed an economic crisis that has hit the Gypsy community harder than any other group and has contributed to increasing public animosity toward the Roma.

Stoyan se porte très bien et va rendre visite à ses grands-parents en Bulgarie en avril 2003. Depuis quelques temps, l'idée de mettre nos photos de Bulgarie sur un site me trottait dans la tête... Bulgaria announces new Cabinet
SOFIA, Bulgaria Bulgaria's prime minister designate, former King Simeon II, has named businessmen rather than professional politicians in his Cabinet to tackle his country's woes. Simeon was the first ex-monarch to regain political power in post-communist eastern Europe after his National Movement for Simeon II (NMS) won a June 17 general election, one seat short of an outright majority. The new Bulgarian regime has pledged speedy reform giving themselves 800 days to improve people's lives as well as taking the country into NATO and the European Union, tackling corruption, speeding up reforms, boosting growth, cutting taxes and attracting foreign investors. The former king also acknowledged his coalition partner, the Turk Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), by appointing the first ethnic Turks to sit in a Bulgarian government. His government will have a Western-trained business profile with the top jobs of deputy prime minister and economy minister going to Nikolai Vassilev, a 31-year-old emerging markets analyst.

Ex-king wins Bulgaria poll
SOFIA, Bulgaria (CNN) The party of former Bulgarian king Simeon II wins the country's general election, promising to raise living standards and tackle corruption. Balkan TV correspondent Venelin Petkov told CNN that with 99 percent of ballots tallied national election commission figures showed the National Movement of Simeon II taking 43 percent. This provides a large margin against 18 percent for the Union of Democratic Forces coalition, which currently holds power. Low living standards, government corruption and lack of patience for more painful reform were credited for the strong showing of the National Movement for Simeon II's which was largely unknown two months ago. Petkov quoted further figures showing the coalition of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, a descendant of the Communist Party that ruled the country for more than 40 years, winning 17 percent of the vote. ALSO Elections may herald return of king The coalition representing the Rights and Freedoms Movement Party, which has the support of the ethnic Turkish population, was shown taking seven percent.
