by Neytcho ILTCHEV The author does not pretend for complete coverage on any of the below topics. This page is intended to provide a brief and comprehensive summary on Bulgarian history, economy and politics to the uninitiated rather than being a thorough reference. Bulgarian history outline The Republic of Bulgaria is situated at the centre of the Balkan Peninsula in South-Eastern Europe. Currently the country is member of the United Nations , the Council of Europe, the NATO and Associated Member of the EU. Bulgaria is also member of the World Trade Organisation - WTO (former GATT) and the Central European Free Trade Agreement ( CEFTA Following the shocking victory of ex-king Simeon's NDS party on 17 June 2001, Simeon II Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, became the Prime Minister. In November 2001, Bulgarian voters elected 44-year old Georgi Parvanov to be their president in an apparent show of frustration over poverty and corruption in the country. M. Parvanov is to be the leader who will prepare the ground for Bulgaria's EU and NATO membership. Since early 1997 Bulgaria has been governed by a right-wing coalition with a strong and stable social and parliamentary support for four years. The President of the Republic was also member of the same coalition.

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Bulgaria Introduction Bulgaria Background: The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000. In the north, the Danube River forms the greater part of Bulgaria's common boundary with Romania. Greece and European Turkey lie to the south and southeast of Bulgaria. The country is divided roughly into three parallel east-west zones: the Danubian tableland in the north, the Stara Planina (or Balkan) Mountains in the center, and the Thracian Plain and the Rhodope and Pirin Mountains in the south and southwest. About one- third of the country lies at an altitude of 500 meters (1,640 ft.) above sea level. The average elevation is 480 meters (1,575 ft.) above sea level. On the fringe of the humid continental climate zone, Bulgaria has a climate similar to the U.S. Midwest. A Reader's Guide to Bulgaria
General Information and Bibliographies
Bulgaria
The Area Handbook for Bulgaria (Washington DC: US Government Printing Office, 1974) is badly out of date for current events, although it contains much useful information on geography, history, and cultural traditions. Robert J. McIntyre's Bulgaria: Politics, Economics and Society (London and New York: Pinter, 1988) provides a good introductory survey of development during the Communist era, although its conclusions about the stability and popular acceptance of the regime were soon proved wrong. The publication of Bulgarien , concluded the nearly twenty-year effort of Klaus-Detlev Grothusen to produce comprehensive area studies of the Southeast European states. Published in English and German, it includes the work of thirty-five social scientists from six Western countries. Beginning with sections on Bulgaria's geography (Ian M. Matley) and prewar history (Richard J.Crampton) and postwar surveys of domestic politics (John D. Bell) and foreign policy (Klaus-Detlev Grothusen), it presents specialized studies on the political and legal systems, economy, society, and culture, and includes an extensive section on bibliography. Although with the collapse of the Zhivkov regime, much of its material became instantly dated, Bulgarien is the most thorough reference work on Communist Bulgaria that we are ever likely to have.
