Geography
Bulgaria is situated in Southeastern Europe in a crossroad between Europe, Asia and Africa. It borders the Black Sea to the east, Turkey and Greece to the south, Serbia and the F.Y.R.O.M. to the west and Romania to the north. The country occupies a total area of 110 910 sq km. The climate is temperate continental, tending to Mediterranean in the southern region, with 4 seasons - cold damp winters and hot dry summers, mild autumns and short rainy springs. This enables you to travel all-the-year round. The relief of Bulgaria varies. The mountaineous areas predominate, occupying almost one quarter of the country's territory. The Balkan Range or Stara Planina cross the country from west to east dividing Bulgaria into 2 almost equal parts. The southern part is mostly occupied by the mountains Pirin, Rila (with Mussala, the highest peak of the Balkan Pensinsula - 2925 m) and Rhodopi which form a large massif. To the north lies the biggest Bulgarian lowlands area, the Danubean plate. Small and fertile valleys are spread between the Balkan Range and its lower sub-mountains. The most famous of the them is the Rose Valley where the rose oil is produced.

http://www.bulgaria2net.com/about/geography.html
GEOGRAPHY OF BULGARIA
The relief of Bulgaria is diverse, including vast lowlands planes, low hills, high and low mountains, valleys, river basins and deep gorges. The surface structures were formed during different geological eras. Oldest in terms of geological classification are the Moezian Platform (the Danubian Hilly Plane)and the Rila Massif and the Rhodopes. The undulating system of Stara Planina and Sredna Gora mountains and the Sub-Balkan Valleys date from a later geological age.
The average altitude of Bulgaria is 470 m. Over 2/3 of the territory is situated at an altitude of 600 m, i.e. lowlands, planes and low hills prevail. The lowlands (up to 200 m) take up 30 % of the territory, the planes and the low hills (200-600 m) - 40 %, the low mountains (600-1000 m) - 16 %, the medium high mountains (1000-1600 m) - 10 %, and the high mountains (over 1600 m) - 4 %. A typical feature of the relief is that its structural units alternate from North to South and extend (also diminishing in height) from West - North-west to East - South-east.
In the northernmost part of Bulgaria, to the south of the Danube River, lies the Danubian Hilly Plane, the largest plane in the country. To the south it reaches the Fore-Balkan, to the west - the Timok River, to the east - the Black Sea. Its highest point (502 m) is in the region of the Shoumen Plateau. From the east to the west the relief changes from lowlands-plateau to uplands-plateau.

In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000.

Geography of Bulgaria
World Facts Index Bulgaria Weather Map of Bulgaria The land area of Bulgaria is 110,550 square kilometers, slightly larger than that of the state of Tennessee. The country is situated on the west coast of the Black Sea, with Romania to the north, Greece and Turkey to the south, and Yugoslavia to the west. Considering its small size, Bulgaria has a great variety of topographical features. Even within small parts of the country, the land may be divided into plains, plateaus, hills, mountains, basins, gorges, and deep river valleys. Boundaries Although external historical events often changed Bulgaria's national boundaries in its first century of existence, natural terrain features defined most boundaries after 1944, and no significant group of people suffered serious economic hardship because of border delineation. Postwar Bulgaria contained a large percentage of the ethnic Bulgarian people, although numerous migrations into and out of Bulgaria occurred at various times. None of the country's borders was officially disputed in 1991, although nationalist Bulgarians continued to claim that Bulgaria's share of Macedoniawhich it shared with both Yugoslavia and Greecewas less than just because of the ethnic connection between Macedonians and Bulgarians. Topography The main characteristic of Bulgaria's topography is alternating bands of high and low terrain that extend east to west across the country. From north to south, those bands are the Danubian Plateau, the Balkan Mountains (called Stara Planina, meaning old mountains in Bulgarian), the central Thracian Plain, and the Rhodope Mountains. The easternmost sections near the Black Sea are hilly, but they gradually gain height to the west until the westernmost part of the country is entirely high ground.
