Hiking and culture-Bulgaria
Odysseia-in
Click here for info This itinerary includes some of the most valuable mountain areas, historical sites and villages of Bulgaria. The Rhodope and Pirin Mountains are the most interesting when talking about nature, culture, traditions and architecture. The paths lead us to great natural phenomena, through green hills and valleys, monasteries and forgotten villages with preserved traditional crafts. One of them – Gela – is said to be the birthplace of the famous musician Orpheus. We visit several traditional villages as Shiroka Laka, the Old city of Plovdiv. We also reach some famous ritual places and monasteries as Bachkovo, Rozhen and Rila. We also visit the capital Sofia.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Flight to Sofia. We transfer to Plovdiv town (2h) - formerly Philipopolis after the name of its founder - King Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great, IV century B.C. The town has an attractive and vibrant center and is admired for its old town with Thracian fortifications and great-timbered mansions, pleasant walking street with magnificent Viennese influenced architecture, and Roman ruins. We’ll settle in hotel close to the old center. We dine in “Alafrangite” restaurant, which has preserved the ambiance of the Bulgarian Revival 19th century and has live traditional music. Overnight in a hotel.

Bulgaria Chief Rabbis During the Ottoman rule over Bulgaria, the Chief Rabbi of Adrianople (Edirne) was also that of Bulgaria. With the independence in 1878, the Bulgarian Jewish communities remained without any supreme rabbinical institution. The local government considered the Chief Rabbi of Sofia and its surroundings, then Rab. Gabriel Almosnino, as the legal representative of the Bulgarian Jews. Fig. 1. Map of Modern Bulgaria demonstrating the proximity of the Turkish Republic and Greece Only in 1880, Rab. Gabriel Almosnino was officially nominated Chief Rabbi of Bulgaria. The Great Rabbinate was in fact a one-man institution representing the whole Jewish community.
