    Flag of Bulgaria Background:
Bulgaria earned its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946.
Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multi-party election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime.
Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000. Impressions of Bulgaria
~ along the Black Sea coast / Nessebur

our tour August 2003 ~ picture links open new windows ~ O ur vacation spot was Svete Konstantin, a small town on the Black Sea in the vicinity of the exclusive seaside resort of Varna. We flew to Bulgaria with a TU (Tupolew), which was a special experience. The machine has 3 power units at its tail ( one on the left, one on the right and one on top) and we had our seats right in the centre of this hell - two hours booming! After we arrived at the hotel, a view out of our room on the 6th floor made us forget the strain and we enjoyed a fantastic panoramic view over the sea and the bay with its fine sandy white beaches. T B ulgaria is a small country on the Balkan Peninsula right on the Black Sea Coast, which has just 8,5 million inhabitants. Nevertheless a multitude of cultural historical treasures, unique in the world, bears witness to a great past in the course of which Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Osman conquerors ruled over the country for centuries and left behind their traces. But still Bulgaria has cultivated and preserved its original Slav culture. A mong the sights the mediaeval city of Nessebur is a jewel and a must. The 2500 years old city has been on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO since 1983. Located on a small peninsula of the Black Sea the delightful tourist spot yearly attracts a million visitors. The romantic place has cast a spell on us since we visited it for the first time in 1991 and we'll certainly return whenever we have a chance.

    Bulgaria History and Culture
History Despite a turbulent history, Bulgaria is the oldest surviving state in Europe to have kept its original name, and most of the population are descendants of the Bulgar invasion of the south Danube around that time. Culture In the Middle Ages (especially in the 10th and 11th centuries), Bulgaria was the center of Slavic culture. Over the centuries Bulgarian culture has been influenced successively by Byzantine, Greek, Russian, and Western cultures. Acknowledgements: ASIATRAVELMART.COM

by Neytcho ILTCHEV The author does not pretend for complete coverage on any of the below topics. This page is intended to provide a brief and comprehensive summary on Bulgarian history, economy and politics to the uninitiated rather than being a thorough reference. Bulgarian history outline The Republic of Bulgaria is situated at the centre of the Balkan Peninsula in South-Eastern Europe. Currently the country is member of the United Nations , the Council of Europe, the NATO and Associated Member of the EU. Bulgaria is also member of the World Trade Organisation - WTO (former GATT) and the Central European Free Trade Agreement ( CEFTA Following the shocking victory of ex-king Simeon's NDS party on 17 June 2001, Simeon II Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, became the Prime Minister. In November 2001, Bulgarian voters elected 44-year old Georgi Parvanov to be their president in an apparent show of frustration over poverty and corruption in the country. M. Parvanov is to be the leader who will prepare the ground for Bulgaria's EU and NATO membership. Since early 1997 Bulgaria has been governed by a right-wing coalition with a strong and stable social and parliamentary support for four years. The President of the Republic was also member of the same coalition.

    Names of the Romani People
Many names have been used to refer to the Romani people, including: Cigano, Gypsies, Gipsies, Rom, Roma, Romani, Tsigani, Tzigane, Zigeuner, and others. Most Roma identify themselves either by their tribal name or by one of the names beginning with the prefix "Rom". Frequently, a prefix with a double "R" is used, as in "Rrom". "...the Council of Europe has approved the use of "Rroma (Gypsies)" in its official documents (CLRAE Recommendation 11 - June 1995)" Because of centuries of hatred, the name "Gypsy" has become a "derogatory, pejorative and offensive" name. It was invented by Europeans, who incorrectly believed that the Roma had their origin in Egypt. Click below to Visit one of our Sponsors:
    History of the Roma
The Roma first migrated from Hindustan to eastern Europe circa 1000, for reasons that have been lost to history. Some authorities believe that there may have been additional migrations at a later date. During the 14th and 15th centuries, they drifted into western Europe. Some emigrated from Europe to the US and Canada in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following World War II, and lately the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, there has been an additional westward migration. Most Roma settle down in a single location. Only about 5% of European Romanies are believed to be nomads.

Plovdiv - culture crossroads and picturesque nature Bulgaria, situated in the south-eastern part of Europe, and in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, had been a land of many ancient civilizations and great peoples, all anxious to leave marks of their turbulent history: bronze and iron spears and arrows, stone buildings remains, messages to future generations carved on rocks and stone columns or written on parchment or leather. For centuries, the roads passing through the territory of our country have been connecting Europe to Asia and Africa. Four common European transport corridors, connecting Western and Northern Europe with the Eastern and Southern part of the continent, cross their roads right here. Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria, situated on the Maritsa River. Its unique location on these ancient crossroads has stimulated strong cultural and political influences from East and West civilizations, and yet maintained its unique cultural identity. Being older than most of the oldest towns like Rome, Athens, Carthage or Constantinople, an almost contemporary of Troy, Plovdiv is a town built upon layers of towns and a culture developed upon layers of cultures. Plovdiv is a picturesque town, with many parks and gardens, museums and archaeological monuments. Its old part, called the Old Town, with houses from the National Revival period (18-19th century), is an imposing open-air museum situated on the three hills of the ancient Trimontium. One of the most remarkable sights of the town, the Ancient Theatre (a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre), is located there and is still used for open-air performances.
