Black Americans have fought in every war in which this country as been engaged. However, there first major participation came during the Civil War. During that bloody conflict, nearly 180,000 black men wore the Union blue. More than 33,000 of the gallant soldiers gave their lives for the sake of freedom and their country. In recognition of their valuable services during the War Between the States, Congress provided legislation which enacted six regiments of black regular army soldiers. Of these six, four units were infantry and the remaining two, cavalry. The latter were designated as the U.S. Ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments. Headquarters in Greenville, Louisiana and Leavenworth, Kansas, the two units were destined to become the most decorated of all U.S. Military Regiments. All twelve companies of the Tenth had been organized by the summer of 1867. The majority of the men were mustered to combat hostile Cheyenne Indians along the lines of the Kansas-Pacific railroad. The troopers soon proved their bravery and valor in skirmishes and hot fire-fights. They won the respect of the Cheyenne warriors who named them

http://www.ruraltel.net/gced/tnthistory.htm
Who were they? After the Civil War, Congress passed a bill to establish a peacetime military. Provisions in this bill created six regiments of colored troops—four infantry (foot soldiers) and two cavalry (on horseback)—of about 1,000 men each. The troops were placed under the command of Colonels Benjamin Grierson and Edward Hatch. African Americans from the North and South, many of them freed slaves, enlisted in what were organized as the 9th and 10th Cavalries. The Buffalo Soldiers served at Wounded Knee and with Teddy Roosevelt in Cuba, battled Crazy Horse, helped capture Geronimo and Billy the Kid and strung telegraph lines across the West.
The Name
Although there are several theories, the Calvaries actually got their name from their enemies, the American Indians, who admired the colored troopers' fearlessness and courage (qualities also found in the buffalo). The Native Americans also believed that the Soldiers' hair resembled the tuft between the horns of the bison. Thus, the name Buffalo Soldiers stuck, and the Soldiers wore it with pride.
Their Mission
The primary assignment of the Buffalo Soldiers was the suppression of Native American tribes who interfered with the settlement of the Americans on the frontier. Like white units, they were called into service to "carry out U.S. Government public policy of Westward expansion," as well as escort tribes to designated reservations. The Soldiers built and defended the telegraph lines, built and repaired forts and helped establish the foundation of future towns. They were also involved in the settling of disputes between railroads and unions as well as those between the white settlers. In the Westward expansion, the Buffalo Soldiers mapped the vast territories in New Mexico and Arizona, marking the water holes.

    During the Civil War, the US government formed regiments known as the United States Colored Troops (USCT) composed entirely of African-American soldiers led by white officers. At the end of the war the army reorganized and authorized the formation of two regiments of black cavalry with the designations 9th United States Cavalry and 10th United States Cavalry. Two regiments of infantry were formed at the same time. These units were composed of black enlisted men commanded by white officers (like: Brigadier General Grierson ) with a few exceptions such as Henry O. Flipper

    The Buffalo Soldier Story The proud history of the 9th and 10th Cavalry. Nearly sixteen months after the end of the Civil War, Section 3 of the Act of Congress entitled "An Act to increase and fix the Military Peace Establishment of the United States" authorized the formation of the two regiments of cavalry composed of "colored" men. The Act was approved on 28 July 1866. On September 21, 1866, the 9th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Greenville, Louisiana and the 10th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Under the competent leadership of Colonels Edward Hatch and Benjamin Grierson, first Regimental Commanders of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments,repectively, both regiments were trained and equipped and began a long and proud history. For over two decades, the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments conducted campaigns against American Indian tribes on a western frontier that extended from Montana in the Northwest to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in the Southwest. They engaged in several skirmishes against such great Indian Chiefs as Victorio, Geronimo, and Nan."Buffalo Soldiers" was the name given the black cavalrymen by the plains indians. Reason for the name is uncertain. One view is that the Indians saw a resemblance between the black man's hair and the mane of the buffalo. Another view is that when a buffalo was wounded or cornered, it fought ferociously, displaying unusual stamina and courage. This was the same fighting spirit Indians saw in combat with black cavalrymen. Since Indians held the buffalo in such high regard, it wasfelt that the name was not given in contempt.

    • After the Civil War and for the first time in American history, African Americans were permitted to serve in the regular U.S. peacetime army;
    • Buffalo Soldiers were subjected to not only harsh terrain in all kinds of extreme weather conditions, but to prejudicial attitudes by those whom they were to protect;
    • Buffalo Soldiers not only served in the western territories of the U.S., but fought in the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection in 1899, and patrolled Yosemite, General Grant and Sequoia National Parks in California.
    The federal government disbanded most of the United States Colored Troops after the Civil War, although some continued to patrol in the West. African Americans had fought as soldiers in the American Revolution and in the Civil War, but it was not until March, 1866, when Congress passed legislation to reorganize the military, that the first enlistment of African Americans into the United States Army was permitted. At that time, six all-black regiments were created: the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st infantries, and the 9th and 10th cavalries. However, by 1869 the four infantries were reduced to two, the 24th and 25th regiments. This image is of the "Buffalo Soldiers" at Fort Keogh, Missouri, 25th Infantry. These infantrymen escorted western migrants, protected mail and stage routes, and fought in attacks on the Apaches, Kiowas, Cheyennes, and Comanches. The 10th Cavalry is credited with capturing the feared Indian leader, Geronimo, in 1885. The Buffalo Soldiers, as the Native Americans named them, distinguished themselves by earning fourteen Congressional Medal of Honors for their heroic efforts.

    http://personalweb.smcvt.edu/thefort/History/BuffaloSoldiers.htm
    The Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Ethan Allen Formation of the African American Regiments The Tenth Cavalry Regiment was one of the first full time African American regiments in the United States military. African American volunteer forces had fought during the Civil War, but they were not considered a permanent part of the military. The creation of two African American cavalry regiments and four infantry units was proposed by Congressman Ben F. Wade, and enacted by a vote of 27 to 5 in 1866. The Tenth Cavalry was activated on July 28, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, under the command of Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson. The troops were composed of freed slaves from the Southern states and veterans of the Civil War.
    Through the following decades, the African American regiments had the lowest rate of desertion, 4% as opposed to 25% in the United States Army. They earned thirteen dollars a month, the average pay rate for a soldier, but they were given little chance for promotion. Though the army had accepted these soldiers, they were not considered equals and were strictly segregated. The African American soldiers maintained high regimental pride and morale despite difficult campaigns and racist treatment. Initially, the troops were sent West to the least populated area of the United States, where the Army believed they would cause the least racial tension. On the frontier, they protected the railroad, the mail, and the settlers; while they fought the Native Americans during the Indian Wars.

    Amazon.com: Baseball aficionados know John B. Holway as author of books about the Negro Leagues that rescued from obscurity many of the great black players who could not play in the segregated ranks of major league baseball. Here, Holway sets his sights on another group of heroes: the men of the "Tuskegee experiment"the effort to train black pilots during World War II. Many white officers believed the experiment would be a failure because blacks did not have the skills necessary to become pilots. But the Tuskegee Airmen proved them wrong, and black pilotsin particular those of the 332nd Squadron (the Red Tails of the title)established stellar records in combat. Holway quotes copiously from his interviews with black airmen, and the result is a stunning record of the heroism of black men in all but impossible circumstances

    Date: 08/19/2001    Edition: Final    Section: Utah    Page: B1 The new Buffalo Soldiers' appearance at the Festival of the American West this month was a welcome reminder of the role black troops played in Utah's past. The 9th Cavalry joined four companies of the 21st Infantry in 1886 to found Fort Duchesne in the Uinta Valley. They were sent to keep an eye on the Ouray and Uinta reservations, a fact not appreciated by the Utes, some of who probably remembered fighting the Buffalo Soldiers at Milk River in 1879. Not surprisingly, the black troops faced much prejudice. Their first commanding officer, Major Frederick Benteen, did not hesitate to express his contempt for his men.  Benteen, a hard-drinking survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, did not confine his prejudice to blacks. "Some think I came here to fight Indians," he said, "but I came here to fight Mormons." Other soldiers did not share Benteen's bigotry. One visitor to the post said the "white infantrymen and the black cavalrymen at the fort fraternize without any fine discrimination as to color." The men ate together, played in the post band and even fought "the festive bedbug together." Many of the Utes were not pleased to find the "black white man" at the fort, but the Buffalo Soldiers did the Ute Nation much good service. Every year many tribal members returned to their former hunting grounds. In the summer of 1887, Chief Colorow's band jumped the reservation and went hunting in eastern Colorado, where hatred of the tribe was rampant. The governor called out the state militia to punish the Utes, probably calculating that if they were all killed, they would cease to be a problem.
