The History and Origins of African American History Month
Originally established as Negro History Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American author and scholar, this event evolved into the establishment in 1976 of February as "Black History Month." This commemoration has increasingly been referred to as "African American History Month," although both names are currently in use. Since 1926, The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH) has established the national theme for the month-long celebration of Afro-American History Month. Timeline: Highlights of African American History
Questions and Answers from The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH) on African American History Month
Q: Why Afro-American (Black) History Month?
    A:
The true facts of the contributions of Afro-Americans to the discovery, pioneering, development and continuance of America have not properly and adequately been presented in the textbooks, media and other communications media. Indeed, for the most part, Blacks have been left out of the written record about America. The fact that some changes have been made in recent years points to the need for a fuller report about Afro-American contribution. The designation of February as Afro-American History Month is an attempt by ASALH to remedy this neglect and provide for all Americans the information needed for creative and empathetic understanding about Afro-Americans in the nation.

National African American History Month, 2002
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation During these extraordinary times, America looks forward to new challenges and opportunities with a reinvigorated sense of unity and common purpose. We are a strong and vibrant Nation, thanks to the creativity, fortitude, and resilience of people of every race and background. During National African American History Month, we celebrate the many achievements and contributions made by African Americans to our economic, cultural, spiritual, and political development. In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson founded The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Through that Association, he began pressing for the establishment of Negro History Week as a way to bring national attention to the accomplishments of African Americans. He hoped to neutralize the apparent distortions in Black history and to provide a more objective and scholarly balance to American and World history. Dr. Woodson's dream became a reality in 1926. He chose the second week of February for the observance because of its proximity to the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two individuals whom Dr. Woodson felt had dramatically affected the lives of African Americans. And in 1976, the Association succeeded in expanding the observance, which then became Black History Month.

With the release of the movie "Glory", made by Tri- Star Pictures in 1989, we saw the first real interest in the part that Negroes played in our Military history. But this did not start with the Buffalo Soldiers or even the American Civil War. It started much earlier.
    The Early Years
Negro Troops marched in the ranks of Washington's armies, in the cause of independence. They served with Andrew Jackson at New Orleans in 1815 to repel the British invaders. But it was their first large scale employment during the Civil War, that they made their real entrance into American History.
    Civil War Period
When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Negroes were eager to wear the Union blue, but it wouldn't come easy. On the first anniversary of Fort Sumter, General David Hunter organized a Negro regiment. But his effort was abortive and the regiment was "turned off without a shilling, by order of the War Department." Seven months later Colonel T. W. Higginson of Massachusetts took command of the First Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers, the first slave regiment mustered into the service of the United States. By the end of the war 180,000 Negroes had served in the Union army and taps had sounded over the bodies of 33,380 of them. Yet, they didn't fight only in Union Blue. Sadly, little has ever been written of the Negroes that served in the Confederate Army, so we know little of their reasons for fighting for the Confederacy or the outcome of these efforts.

The Native Americans were the first to put into practice environmental techniques in order to preserve their environment. They practiced forestry and land management to preserve and keep the forests and natural grasses. They practiced prairie burning to create new growth and to control the migration of the buffalo. They knew how to use fire and how to control it by using backfires. Today, we are going back to these practices that were tried and proven by the Native Americans. Native Americans laid the basis for our modern medicine and pharmacology. The Incas and the Aztecs even practiced surgery. They understood the principle of sucking out the venom to treat a snakebite. They even had underarm deodorants, toothpaste, and breath fresheners. The Aztecs understood the role of the heart and blood circulation. Their doctors developed an extensive vocabulary that identified virtually all the organs of the body that the science of anatomy recognizes today. Cleanliness, bathing, and steam baths were practiced all over the Americas. Smallpox, bubonic plague, tuberculosis, malaria, yellow fever, and influenza were all unknown in the New World until the arrival of the Europeans.

The Spanish-American War On February 15th, 260 American sailors were killed when the battleship Maine blew up and sank in Havana harbor. The war with Spain began in April 1898, when Major General William Shafter, a former commander of the 24th Infantry led an expeditionary force of over 17,000 men, including nearly 3,000 Black regulars, into Cuba. Although the Spanish American War was ostensibly fought to liberate Caribbean and Philippine islanders from Spanish oppression, the participation of Buffalo Soldier and Black volunteer regiments in this war was not without controversy. African Americans questioned whether they, who were deprived of civil rights by federal and state laws and were being lynched and terrorized in the South, should fight for a government that recognized them as a citizen in name only. Articles in the Black press during the war showed a diversity of opinion in the African American community.

Black soldiers fought in Washington's army during the War of Independence, and served with Andrew Jackson at New Orleans in 1815. Late in 1861, Colonel T. W. Higginson took command of the First Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers, the first Black regiment in the service of the United States. On June 28, 1866, an Act of Congress authorized the creation of six regiments of Black troops, two of cavalry and four of infantry. These troops went on to play a major role in the history of the West, as the "Buffalo Soldiers."
    "We Can, We Will!"
On September 21, 1866, the 9th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Greenville, Louisiana under command of Colonel Edward Hatch.
    "Ready And Forward!"
and the 10th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas under command of Colonel Benjamin Grierson.
For more then 20 years, the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments served on the frontier from Montana to Texas, along the Rio Grande in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and the Dakotas. They built forts and roads, strung telegraph lines, protected railroad crews, escorted stages and trains, protected settlers and cattle drives, and fought Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache warriors, among others. Dangers such as cholera and rabid wolves sometimes took more lives than Indian warfare. The Plains Indians began to call the Black cavalrymen "Buffalo Soldiers" and the troopers accepted the title and wore it proudly. To be associated with the fighting spirit of the Indian's sacred buffalo was a measure of respect.

    Soldiers in the Sun:
The Philippine War Following the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish American War in December of 1898, the United States took control of the former Spanish colonies of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Companies from the segregated Black infantry regiments reported to the Presidio of San Francisco on their way to the Philippines in early1899. Filipino nationalists ( Insurectos ) led by Emilio Aguinaldo resisted the idea of American domination and began attacking U.S. troops, including the 24th and 25th Infantry regiments. The 9th and 10th Cavalry were sent to the Philippines as reinforcements, bringing all four Black regiments plus African American national guardsmen into the war against the Insurectos . Within the Black community in the United States there was considerable opposition to intervention in the Philippines. Many Black newspaper articles and leaders supported the idea of Filipino independence and felt that it was wrong for the United States to subjugate non-whites in the development of what was perceived to be the beginnings of a colonial empire. Bishop Henry M. Turner characterized the venture in the Philippines as "an unholy war of conquest;" but it was also felt by most African Americans that a good military showing by Black troops in the Philippines would reflect favorably and enhance their cause in the United States.

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum: Uniting All By Breaking Barriers

Founded in January 2001, by Paul J. Matthews, the mission of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is to tell the story of the brave African-American men and women who have overcome extreme adversity, while fighting the great American wars. That story begins with the rich history and legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers. Members of the all African-American 9 th and 10 th Cavalries, created in 1866 by Congress, the Buffalo Soldiers were a driving force in America’s drive to expand further west. The Native American tribe, the Cheyenne, gave them their name. Revered by the Native Americans, the buffalo were source of physical and spiritual sustenance for them. Like the sacred buffalo, these soldiers of color fought back ferociously when cornered. Only 10% of the Buffalo Soldiers time was spent in engagement with Native Americans said Paul J. Matthews, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum founder and curator.Among many daunting tasks, they explored and mapped a vast amount of the Southwest, strung thousands of miles of telegraph cable and guarded railroad work crews “When people come to the museum, they are in awe of all the accomplishments that were achieved by the black soldiers,” said Matthews “What stands out is that without the Buffalo Soldiers and the U.S. Cavalry the Westward Movement would have been delayed by 50 years”.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Buffalo Soldiers were assigned to the harshest and most desolate posts. Specific duties included subduing Mexican revolutionaries, outlaws, comercheros, rustlers and hostile Native Americans. Additional administrative duties included exploring and mapping the Southwest, and establishing frontier outposts for future towns.
