Buffalo - Bison
Recent News Links Bison once roamed from Canada to Mexico, grazing the great plains and frequenting the mountain areas of the North American continent. Their number being so great that the early explorers could not count them, describing them as "number-numberless," and "the country was one black robe" and the "plains were black and appeared as if in motion" with the herds of bison. The most commonly used estimate of their former numbers is approximately 60 million. A strong relationship between the human and the bison has existed for thousand of years. Bison were the center of life for the Plains Tribes of Native Americans, providing them with food, shelter, clothing and spiritual inspiration. Legend tells "the Great Spirit brought the pipe to the people. She came as a young woman wearing a white buckskin dress and moccasins. After the Great Spirit presented the pipe to the people and explained the significance of that pipe, she left the teepee as a white bison calf." The near extermination of the American Bison did not occur just in a few short violent years. The fur trade, which began in the 1600s, initially focused on beaver but then demanded that bison (buffalo) robes be shipped to Europe. By the early 1800s, trade in buffalo robes and buffalo tongues significantly increased and caused approximately 200,000 bison kills annually on the plains. The 1830s to 1860s were the four decades in which most of the slaughter of bison occurred. Wagon load after wagon load of robes, tongues and, occasionally, selected cuts of bison meat, moved east. Soon, collection and shipping of bison bones to eastern cities where they ground up for use as phosphorous fertilizer or bone char became common. The arrival of the railroads further exacerbated herd conditions for the bison and by the early 1880s there were only a few free-ranging bison.

Bear Country USA Once Buffalo Bison inhabited vast territories of North America. Herds that counted about 30-70 million species roamed the area freely and were the symbol of free spirit and strength. Native Americans hunted the species for meat, clothing material, and other uses. With the development of commercial hunting and agriculture, the Buffalo Bison experienced a huge decline in numbers. The population was devastated and reduced by a few million and the Buffalo Bison found itself on the verge of extinction. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Buffalo Bison started to recover. The population grew a little, yet the species never recovered from the damage brought by extensive hunting and habitat loss. Nowadays, Buffalo Bison herds are found in parks and wildlife reserves. It is likely that wild free herds will never come back to North America.
Buffalo Bison - Description
Buffalo Bison are the largest land animals of North America. Males and females differ in size considerably. A male Buffalo Bison stands about 2m at the shoulder. The length of the body is from 2.13-3.8 m. The shoulder hump and a huge head are prominent Buffalo Bison characteristics. Buffalo Bison have long hair at the front that is of brown color. The length of the hair, as well as the size of the animal, helps to distinguish between a male and a female. Photo source:
Bear Country USA Buffalo Bison also have horns. They are black in color and tend to curve upward and inward with a sharp tip at the end. The Buffalo Bison has circular black hooves. The legs are short, yet steady.

Buffalo Hunter Buffalo Hunter Buffalo Hides Bison Herds Sharps Rifle American Fur Company Buffalo hunter The Plains Indians had hunted buffalo which numbered close to 60 million in the early 1800's as a food mainstay for centuries but the buffalo hunter that invaded the American Plains in the middle 1800's had the buffalo herds near extinction in less than half a century It has been recorded that the Indians alone sold 100,000 buffalo hides to the American Fur Company in the middle 1840's. In addition the Indians used the buffalo hides for their own usage also. The building of the transcontinental railroads encouraged the slaughter of the buffalo in order to feed their enormous crews In the 1870's the leather companies found a way to utilize the bull hides and were paying $3.00 a piece for them. Many a famous person was once a buffalo hunter carrying a .55 caliber Sharps rifle, such as Wyatt Earp Pat Garrett Wild Bill Hickock and William F. Cody

Theodore Roosevelt - 1890s ""...its toughness and hardy endurance fitted it to contend with purely natural forces...to resist cold and wintery blasts or the heat of the thirsty summer, to wander away to new pastures, to plunge over the broken ground, and to plow its way through snow drifts or quagmires."" Theodore Roosevelt The buffalo, Bison bison , is the largest mammal on the North American continent. This magnificent creature, which is a member of the Bovidae, or cow family, was given a common name by the early French explorers who called them "les boeufs," meaning oxen. Throughout the years, the name went through several changes from "buffle" to "buffelo" and finally to its present "buffalo." Bison is the correct scientific and common name, but buffalo has been used and accepted for many years. American Indians have also referred to these powerful animals as "tatanka." The ancestors of the American bison have been traced by their fossilized bones and are thought to have originated in southern Asia during the Pliocene epoch, some 400,000 years ago. The ancient bison was much larger than the present-day animal and ranged throughout the northern hemisphere. Paleontologists have learned that during its long history, the bison went through many changes. At one point in its evolution, a prehistoric bison

http://www.btigerlily.net/BTBuffalo.html
Buffalo/Bison The Native People have used the bison since the Ice Age. It has been utilized as everything from a source of food, clothing and shelter, to a religious object for worship. It was used as a tool to survive on the vast tract of land between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. In the 1500's, the Spanish brought over horses which quickly multiplied and were used by the Native People to follow the great herds. The white man began to slaughter the bison by the millions in the late 1800's.
The bison were killed for material reasons. Thousands were killed for only their hides or tongues, then left to rot in the hot sun of the prairie. The Kansas and Pacific Railroad did much to promote the slaughter of the great bison herds. It mounted heads and shipped them to the East. It sent trainloads of live buffalo on tour. For ten dollars, you could buy a trip on a luxury coach with a gun and ammunition and shoot until you were out of bullets or your barrel became too hot all from the window of the train. General Sheridan, commander of the United States Army advocated the wholesale slaughter of the bison to help subdue the Native People during the Indian Wars.

Family BOVIDAE
Antelope, Cattle, Bison, Buffalo, Goats, and Sheep
This family of 47 Recent genera and 138 species has a natural distribution covering all of Africa, most of Eurasia and North America, and some islands of the Arctic and East Indies. The great majority of genera are native to Africa and to southern and Central Asia. Wild-living populations of some species have been introduced by human agency in New Guinea, New Zealand, Australia, and surrounding islands. Certain species have been domesticated and are now found throughout the world in association with people. The sequence of genera presented here follows basically that of G. G. Simpson 1945), who recognized five subfamilies:
Simpson's list of genera has been modified extensively here, in accordance with various sources cited in the generic accounts that follow. There remains much controversy regarding the classification of the Bovidae. For example, C. D. Simpson 1984) recognized five additional subfamilies: Tragelaphinae, with the genera Tragelaphus, Taurotragus
